Every once and awhile i like to go take a look back at some of people’s reviews and reactions to lost butterfly and tonight it really stands out to me how when zouken tries to convince shirou to kill sakura “for the greater good” theres a not inconsiderable number of them who are nodding along with zouken.

The trope of “the woman has become too powerful/dangerous, she’s out of control and now the man must put her down like old yeller and sure its sad but it has to be done :(” is so ingrained into our popular culture that some people don’t question it even when it comes from an evil fucking worm vampire who’s responsible for all this shit in the first place. Like hello? the narrative has not been subtle about the fact that Zouken is the villain here, him suggesting this should raise red flags. But for some of them it didn’t.

it kind of makes me appreciate heaven’s feel all the more for being one big subversion of that trope. Shirou ultimately refuses to follow in his fathers footsteps and murder his lover for the sake of some nebulous greater good. He and his friends find a way to resolve the problem and prevent any more innocent deaths without having to murder the woman who’s endured 11 years of abuse and trauma. Sakura is allowed to be angry and messy and complicated and vent all her fury but ultimately still sympathetic, still allowed to come back from the brink and find happiness with her loved ones.
