Meant to be kings
Thorki AU
It was an opportunity that Odin couldn’t ignore: the infant son of his enemy, left behind in the ruins of battle, doomed to die. A runt who, as Odin saw by his hereditary lines, was also a prince. Laufey’s son.
He would marry this child to his son, Thor, he decided. Unite the realms of Jötunheim and Asgard in matrimony. Establish a new monarchy in Jötunheim with this child, his adopted son, as king. Restore order and peace and law, and return the Casket of Ancient Winters once the realm was safely under the new crown.
It was a perfect plan. But Odin didn’t count on Frigga’s strong mothering instincts coming into play.
The queen of Asgard loved Loki the moment Odin brought him home, and it wasn’t long before she was calling him “son” and encouraging little baby Loki to call her “mother”. Odin tolerated it. After all, she would truly be his mother once Loki married Thor. What difference did a few hundred years make?
It soon caught on. The palace staff and servants adopted the new titles for Loki—“her majesty’s youngest son” and “the little Odinson”—and Thor, who was barely older than Loki, began referring to his future bride as “brother”.
The idea was so pervasive that when Thor got a little older, he even “remembered” when Mother had been pregnant with Loki.
Strange how a young mind could convince itself of something that had never happened.
But Odin wasn’t truly worried—not yet. It made the situation a bit more complicated, yes, and perhaps it would be some time before Thor and Loki could look at each other as something other than brothers, but the Allfather had no doubt that eventually they would adapt. They would learn to love each other as spouses, and Thor would get Loki with child. A few mixed-blood heirs would strengthen the alliance between Asgard and Jötunheim.
For now, though, Odin decided to let the matter rest. He would explain everything when Thor and Loki were older.
The day of Thor’s coronation was to be it. Odin planned to sit down with his sons and explain that they were not really blood brothers, but betrothed. But he never got the chance. Frost giants invaded the vault and Thor’s brash actions afterward revealed just how unfit he was to be king. A few more years, then, Odin decided. And some hard discipline.
He banished Thor to Midgard until he could learn some humility and prove himself worthy of his power and titles once more.
But then Loki discovered his true heritage far too early, and the stress of this untimely revelation combined with the matter of Thor’s banishment was too much for Odin’s aging body to take.
He fell into the Odinsleep before he could explain the full truth to Loki: why he was brought to Asgard, the path he was destined to take, and the throne he would inherit—not on Asgard, but on Jötunheim.
For it had always been true. Thor and Loki were both meant to be kings… of their respective realms, married to each other. United as equals. And their children were to be further proof of the peace fostered between their races.
But it would not come to pass. Confused and heartbroken, tortured by feelings of jealousy and self-loathing, Loki, now interim King of Asgard, focused his rage upon the easiest target: his brother.
After proving himself worthy again and being restored his powers, Thor returned to Asgard to find his brother gripped by madness, and the resulting confrontation led to Loki falling from the Bifrost.
Odin watched his son—and his carefully laid plans—disappear into the Void. To add insult to injury, it seemed Thor’s romantic interests were now focused upon a Midgardian woman, of all creatures.
Everything was ruined. Odin privately despaired.
And then, miraculously, Loki was discovered to be alive and on Midgard. With Heimdall’s sight and the Allfather’s seidr, a temporary bridge was conjured to send Thor to retrieve his brother.
The plan was ultimately a success. However, when Thor brought his erstwhile bride back to Asgard, he was in shackles and chains.
Loki expressed no remorse for the mayhem he had caused or the lives he had taken. He had gone bad. Someone had poisoned him, turned him against Thor and all that was good and honorable.
And perhaps, Odin thought grimly, he had been that someone. Because despite all his good intentions, he had failed. He had failed Loki.
After he spoke to his wayward son, Odin knew there was no hope of ever seeing a union between Jötunheim and Asgard now. Loki was gone. Lost beyond redemption. Irredeemable. It was foolish and dangerous to even think about attempting to rehabilitate him. Imprisonment was the only option.
A distressingly familiar pattern was beginning to emerge, Odin noticed.
But the bad luck was only just beginning. The Aether resurfaced soon after Loki was sent to the dungeons. The Dark Elves returned. War came to Asgard and claimed his queen’s life. Then Thor, his own flesh and blood, betrayed him and freed Loki, abandoned his duties to Asgard, and somehow managed to stop Malekith and reclaim the Aether.
Huginn and Muninn delivered word to Odin that Loki had died to save Thor on Svartalfheim. The news wounded Odin far more deeply than he expected. He had little time to grieve, though; the last thought that went through his mind before a powerful spell took him was how familiar this seidr felt. But it couldn’t be…
Then the Allfather’s senses left him completely.
A few years later, on Midgard, Odin was reunited with his sons and, knowing the end was near, finally told them the truth. About everything. How they were meant for each other from the very beginning. How he failed them. About the coming of Ragnarok and the twilight of the gods.
Then his weary body breathed its last, and he went to join his wife in Valhalla.
His two sons were left behind to clean up the mess he had started long ago. They began to put the shambles of their broken relationship back together again, and in the process remembered how much they had once loved each other.
It was ironic. The plans Odin had forged thousands of years ago would come to fruition only when he was no longer alive to see them.
Thor and Loki were married in a simple ceremony onboard a spacecraft bound for Earth, six weeks after Ragnarok. Heimdall performed the ceremony. A Valkyrie lent them the sword. The last survivors of Asgard were in attendance.
The bride wore blue, his natural skin. The groom wore an eyepatch.
At last they were kings. Equals. As they were always meant to be.
