i still dunno how to post huge fuckin pictures so here's to hoping this doesnt get compressed to shit. but anyways

my contribution to the dbh fandom for mermay! i got here like. 4.5 years after the game came out lmao so i'm sure this has already been thought up, but i like the idea of android mer!connor and actual ~organic~ mer!hank meeting and having a really interesting relationship. i'll go into it a bit more under the cut!

i tried to do a lot more with coloring and shading (and background work!) with this one, and i'm pretty happy with my work!!! i feel like i learn something new with every drawing, and this one especially :)

okay so here's my thoughts. maybe connor just straight up sucks at doing what he was made for, or maybe this is a pre -51 connor or something (in which case. ignore the -51 on his tail lmao), so he's taken as like spare parts (like his top half) to be experimented on to see if cyberlife can make a mermaid android to add to the android zoos, because capitalism, but somehow he escapes--maybe before his tail is given a synthskin design, or maybe it's still a prototype tail. but anyways, he escapes (the interwebz says that lake michigan connects to the atlantic ocean through the "st. lawrence seaway system," so i imagine he makes his way through that to the ocean) and spends a lot of time wandering the waters alone until he hears a call on an unusual frequency and finds merman hank also wandering the water alone. and then connor, being way too curious for his own good, totally ambushes hank like "wow! im not alone! we should totally be friends!!" and hank is like. literally what the FUCK are you. i think they wouldn't be able to communicate at first but maybe connor learns how to communicate the way mermaids do or maybe they go the shape of water route and connor teaches hank sign language or something. but anyways, hank is weary of connor at first, being an android, meaning human-built, because the last time he saw his pod, he was leading them during their usual migration and they were attacked by humans (or maybe androids?), and hank was knocked unconscious while he and his mate were protecting cole, and by the time he came to, everyone was gone and his wife's body was the only thing left behind. so he'd been alone ever since and been on a fruitless search, sending out calls and never getting a response, for the people he was meant to protect, including his son and his wife.

so hank is like i'm used to being alone, go away, ur weird. but connor being connor is like :))) hank friend. so they eventually start becoming friends and getting closer. i think, being an android that wasn't originally a mermaid, connor still has access to like the world's knowledge and internet in his noggin and is able to show hank stuff from the human world, even if connor himself was never a part of it or understands it. i think it'd be hilarious for connor to do the thing where he can project an image on his hand and use that to play a movie for them both, and by the end they're both like. what the fuck are humans DOING.

i think if you want some drama and tension in the story, maybe connor has some corrupted memory, or maybe he saw something while at cyberlife or during his travels to the ocean, and it either clicks that what he saw (or his memory finally gets restored) could lead them to hank's lost people, and they go on a mission to figure it out and save them. i 'unno, i'm never gonna write this, if anyone else is inspired to, fuckin go ahead lmao

ALSO. i would like to point out that, while i started this pic before i came across this post, the way i ended up drawing connor's tail looks a LOT like this drawing https://twitter.com/raviquarium/status/1390821303700049920?s=20 i think it's kinda cool that even with 0 understanding AT ALL about how anything mechanical or technological works, i was able to come up with a tail design that made enough sense that someone else thought it would be possible too haha. i just thought of those wooden snakes and those 3D printed snails and figured i'd draw something like that but with cool futuristic looking glass-like fins. so anyways, while it's not a reference i used, i just wanna point out that, yeah, they do look quite a bit similar. which i think is kinda cool !!!!
