Here's the thing: there has not been a moment in Akutagawa's life when he has not been on guard. When death has been your companion and you have felt the cold brush of his fingers against your skin on more than one occasion, you get used to looking for its shadow in the corners.

Here's the real thing: Akutagawa has grown up, and growing up should mean getting wiser, but his childhood fears creep all over him, settle on his throat, choke him.

It's not an easy admission. Vulnerability is not a physical thing, he thinks as the weretiger's hands lie him bare both metaphorical and literally. There's no questions dancing on Atsushi's gaze as his fingers brush over old scars, new ones. His whole body is a map of all his suffering. Akutagawa could point with precision which marks were made by the tigers' claws. The tiger would argue he had it coming.

Maybe he'd be right. You don't attack the tiger only to get surprised when it bites back. It'd be unfair to expect such a creature not to bare its claws.

In any case—

"You're cold," Atsushi mutters, rough hands running through his bare back. "And tense. Would it kill you to relax?"

Yes, Akutagawa wants to say, even though it's technically untrue. He's faced his fears before. He's aware they don't make sense, sometimes.

He's not sure it's fear what keeps him on edge. It's the unfamiliarity of it all. He's not used to being powerless. He's not used to Atsushi's hands on him, either.

Atsushi takes in his silence and sighs, his thumbs pressing at his shoulders, massaging him. "It's okay. You know it's okay, right?"

Akutagawa scoffs. "Do you take me for a fool?"

"I mean..." Atsushi mutters. Akutagawa can hear the smirk on his voice.

"You're not funny. You're the most unfunny individual I've ever had the disgrace to meet."

Atsushi snickers regardless, his hands coming to rest at Akutagawa's waist. He feels the soft touch of Atsushi's lips in the back of his neck and heat starts creeping up to his face. It's an awful feeling. It's awful that the feeling of his thumbs caressing his skin and the slow, soft brush of his breath actually get Akutagawa to relax.

Atsushi takes his time washing his hair and his touch is careful when he helps him wash his body. He doesn't doubt himself like he could've, or like he would've before, but he asks quietly okay? and smiles when Akutagawa hums approvingly. He's always been a fool; of course he'd be proud of himself over something as irrelevant as this.

Out of the shower, Atsushi dries him off with care as Akutagawa's fingers find their way to his skin, following the path of old scars that don't hurt anymore.

Atsushi and Kenji saw him coughing in the hallway and brought him to the nurses office. Him and Atsushi talk. He smiles slightly when Atsushi agrees to go do what he was originally doing. After a bit him and Kenji leave to go to the student council meeting because it looks like Akutagawa fell asleep. Akutagawa does the romance show thing where they quietly murmur the love interest's name after they leave.
