When I was young my dad offhandedly told me he thought people treated fish with so much casual cruelty because fish can’t scream.

The words branded themselves across my soul.

As an adult I think he may have been joking. He payed no especial attention to any indignities fish suffered in our household but I could never forget. I saw fish in a different light after that.

Fish kept in tiny bowls, breathing their own poisons, dying by inches. Fish kept in cold tanks, casually disposed of. Fish touted as being short lived when they could outlive the better loved family dog if only they could breathe. Fish casually won and discarded in cheap plastic bags, thrown away a week later.

"wah proshipping" "wah antishipping", users are so weird. you see them, then you check what their blog looks like and it's the equivilent of a neocities page from 1999. The flashbang of eyestrain it give me is ridiculous. And it's always this specific demographic.

This app boils down to everyone pretending to be loving and accepting, but the seeeecond someone different shows up, someone who genuinely makes them uncomfortable (which is what different implies btw, something being "new", thus creating discomfort), they'll throw a fit.

All social medias do this, but Tumblr in particular irritates me in this regard because of how much it pretends to support minority rights, and thinks reblogging a post is going to help a cause. Only, when real work and mental strain needs to be put into helping people, they turn it down.

It's almost like the priority is their own egos, not helping minority folk

You know what people don’t talk about often enough? Playing catch up in life after spending your teens or early 20s suicidally depressed. There’s so many more layers than just being able to say “I don’t want to die anymore.”

The difficulty in academia or a career after spending years thinking you wouldn’t be alive long enough for any of it to matter.

The exhaustion that comes from self awareness and self soothing, with the constant voice in your head saying “don’t go backwards.”

How lonely it is to watch the people your age starting families when you’re just barely learning what stable relationships are, and the sudden societal pressure of being “up against a clock” for these kinds of things.

The judgement from others if you change your image or interests this late in the game just because you finally figured out who you really are under the demons.

Be kind to those who are developing and blooming after years of not planning on being here long. We are living a life we absolutely didn’t think we’d have, and it’s hard enough without society reminding us there’s expectations of our age.

We didn’t get to be young; we were too busy fighting battles few know.

I love how unsafe the internet is if you're a genuine minority. Oh if you're a GOOD autistic, you're fine. If you understand certain social cues, and have no issues that can't be solved with a tone tag, you're a good autistic. Your autistic speaking mannerisms, though? Absolutely deplorable. And is that... *gasp* YOU BEING WEIRD?? This is unfathomable. how dare an autistic person make me uncomfortable. They're weird, they don't act like ME, so... Queer spaces? If you're cute and soft they'll love you, if you're digestable for Tiktok or whatever garbage social media platform, youre great. If you're binary and passable enough as not-queer, the cishets will love you, and likely a good portion of queer folks will too. But the kinky transgender person who calls themself a fag is considered not proper by default. Unless they specifically create a persona for themselves that dulls things down, they're disliked.

I love how they handled Badyah (spoilers for book 3)

After seeing so many people say they're glad that she's straight, or that "SHE'S CLEARLY AROACE GUYS," I'm glad she went with neither because she actually broke far more stereotypes in being allowed to question her sexuality and change her mind rather than going with an easy label based on limited evidence and jumping to conclusions. Especially since the reasonng of "maybe the fact that I never questioned it is what it means to be straight?" Is a common mistake queer people make and exactly the logic I used to insist I was straight until I turned 22 and got smacked in the fact with a bisexual trans crisis all at once. It takes some people a lot of time to figure themselves out and Badyah's arc was written very well here I think in that regard

Going back on a rejection and asking out the person you shot down earlier is also a thing I feel isnt represented enough, and it's also very relatable. I feel very connected to Badyah as a character and I'm really glad she exists, even if the way they unceremoniously threw away Zagan to make her moment happen was pretty sloppy and disappointing. The boys getting polyamory but not the girls is kinda lame, but makes sense I guess because of their religion? idk I'd still rewrite it if it were me but I wont look a gift horse in the mouth for too long
