Hot Take 2.0

I’m not feeling the new designs for Sailor Moon Crys... excuse me, Sailor Moon “Eternal.”

Sailor Moon Crystal was my intro to the franchise, and I loved it. I loved the sleek, elegant, mature designs that fit the dramatic, serious tone the series went for.

When I went back and watched the 90s anime, I couldn’t get into it. My biggest problem was it’s misplaced tone that attempted to balance lighthearted comedy with intense stakes and ultimately failed to do so in a convincing way. I ended up dropping the show halfway through the S season.

All that said, when I first saw these new designs for the Dream Arc movies, I actually felt angry.

I’m not happy with how the new Crystal staff is ditching the beautiful, romantic look of the first 2 seasons and replacing it with this bubbly, cutesy, babyish style. It honestly looks like one of those crappy Disney XD Marvel shows.

Obviously it’s too late to demand change, and judging by how many 90s anime fans are drooling over it, they’re not planning on making changes whatsoever. I just wish Crystal would have stuck with its Manga-esque designs and mature tone that drew in new fans like me, instead of pandering to 90s fans who complained that Crystal “ruined their childhood” or something.

Now, if disagree with me and think the new look of Sailor Moon and her friends is amazing, that’s fine. It’s your opinion, and I’m not here to try and change that.

But what this absolutely, positively, inarguably is NOT, what it cannot by any sense or definition of the word be even remotely described as

is Sailor Moon Goddamn CRYSTAL.
