Clover's Funeral

Daisy allowed herself to be tugged by tiny fingers, curious and confused by Ashton's excited shouting.

"Daisy! Come quick! There's a weird parade outside!"

She followed the child outside, noting how the sky was overcast and dreary. The weather forecast had predicted rain, but so far today it was mostly light sprinkles. There was a sizeable crowd gathered along the sides of the street. Picking Ashton up, Daisy gave the kid a better view by setting them on her shoulder. Music filled the air, slow and somber. It came from around the corner, but grew louder as the 'weird parade' drew closer.

A sudden realization struck Daisy as Ashton began asking questions.

"Are they celebrating something? Why is the music so sad?"

"Ahh... It's a funeral." Daisy answered.

They watched as the funeral procession moved closer down the street.

The slow jazz carried out in the air. Tears mingled in the rain as mourners watched from the sidewalks and traveled with the parade. Many faces were hidden under umbrellas or rain ponchos. The urn was carried by a short woman with freckles, accompanied by a very tall man holding an umbrella over her.

A low roll of thunder rumbled through the clouds. Some of the bystanders rushed to find shelter from the droplets of rain. Most withstood the weather and held signs in support. The parade continued on, down the street and towards the cemetery. They filed in through the gates, and slowly made their way to the mausoleum. Barely any words were spoken. The rain trickled in sparser drops.

The urn was placed on a pedestal in a personally decorated cubby, the entrance decorated with an arch of clovers and daisies. Candles illuminated an ornate portrait of the late Clover Fields.

One by one, each mourner visited the resting place, to speak their words of peace, leave an offering, and say goodbye. A few sobbed in their grief and had to be pulled away with soothing words.

It wasn't until everyone had taken their turn that he arrived to say his piece.

Wally tilted his head with a scoff, his gaze staring intensely at the portrait.

"Oh, don't look at me like that. I told you I always get what I want. Either I have you in my Family, or no one will…"

He fiddled with the flower in his hand, spinning it between his fingers. his tone growing bitter as he continued to speak.

"I warned you not to cross me, Miss Fields. I was generous and gave you plenty of chances to come around. I let you sing on my stage, I let you build your little charity, I even took your precious little sister to give you more incentive become a part of us. Instead, what did you do? You rebuke my offers, you incite insubordination in my affairs and meddle in my businesses, and you dared to speak out against me. I admit it was amusing at first, watching you strut about acting as if either of you had any form of power, but your persistence grew annoying really fucking quickly."

He sneered at the small daisy in his hand, sucking a breath in through his mouth.

With a smug smile he tossed the flower onto the urn's pedestal.

"And look where it's gotten you. Left choking on your own blood in front of all of those worthless peons you loved so much and turned into nothing but a pitiful pile of ash in a tacky piece of pottery that'll be forgotten by tomorrow's newspaper. No more shows, no more songs. It's lights out for you, Clover Fields."

"All this grief and misery for what? A run down charity with nothing to give? A legacy that will ultimately be forgotten by everyone who knew you? All those poor, unfortunate souls that fawned for you in hopes to benefit from your care… What did you think would happen to them? They've got nowhere to go now. No one to look up to. Their overly praised and frankly overrated benefactor is gone and dead. Your sheep have no shepherd anymore and you've left them to the wolves. You've failed at everything you stood for, Miss Fields, and there's not a damned thing left for them to do except wallow in their grief and die like the wretched vermin they are-"

Wally stops short when a persistent, sound that had been growing steadily louder reaches his ears. A puzzled expression crosses his face as he registers what it is he's hearing.

"What the hell?"

He doesn't even spare Howdy a glance as he steps away from the urn. His pace picking up and becoming more brisk as he marches his way toward the entrance of the mausoleum. This wasn't happening. He wasn't hearing this. What the hell were these fools up to now? He stops short in the open gate, a state of stunned bewilderment overtaking him.

There in the courtyard of the cemetery was the gathering of mourners and the band, marching out to the most upbeat music they could possibly be playing. No longer were they crying with faces full of sorrow. No longer were they expressing the air of dreary grief that had matched the gloomy clouds above. No.

Now they were cheering, and dancing, and laughing.

As if to add insult to the injury the sky had long stopped raining and beams of sunlight poured down in golden rays between cracks in the clouds. Everyone seemed practically joyous in celebration. Wally was so confused. What was the meaning of this? How could they be so happy? He didn't understand. Yet as he watched them dancing and singing as they left, he couldn't help but feel a sense of utter rage.

Even in death, Clover kept defying him.
