01. cash (lack thereof)

đŒ warnings: none
đŒword count: ~1.9k

The words in the letter surprise you. In some ways, it gives you mixed feelings.
Happy, of course, that youâd gotten the job, signed the contract and you could move on from the clinic youâd dedicated over six years to after getting your degree to a larger hospital. It meant a change of pace, change in the people around you, and a step upward in your career.
Sad, that you couldnât start immediately.
The letter announced the start of your contract to be in three months. But you were already packed up from your previous clinic and ready to move out.
Sitting back on your couch, you scan the letter again. âCommencement of the job will be three months from the date on the letter. Please contact us in the case of any confusion.â You sigh and toss the letter aside, leaning your head back.
Three months. Three months to do anything you wanted. Go on a long-needed vacation, binge-watch all the seasons of Brooklyn Nine-Nine, buy a whole supermarketâs worth of ice cream.. the possibilities were endless.
As you were in your reverie of much-anticipated relaxation, your phone rings.
You pick up, and your uncleâs voice rings out in a cheerful baritone, loud and joyful.
âY/N!â
âHi, Uncle.â
âOh, I havenât heard from you in a while, dear. Howâs everything?â
âGood,â you say, a little awkwardly. âI got a new job.â
âGoodness! How wonderful.â Your uncle seems positively delighted. You clear your throat, and ask quietly, âWhy'd you call? Is everything okay?â
âDefinitely! We were just calling to ask if you were going back to the countryside this year.â Your uncle says. You freeze slightly. âI know itâs hard with how busy you are. But itâs good to have a break before you continue running off everywhere, you know?â
âBut you arenât living in the countryside anymore, Uncle,â you remind him. âI donât have anyone to visit.â
âI know,â your uncle says, sighing. âPart of me wishes we stayed, but⊠oh well. Thatâs life. You have to move on from something.â
You stay quiet.
âBut enough about us! Maybe try to go back at least once.â Your uncle says again. âEat well, have a good rest⊠some sea air would be great for you. Call me if you need anything.â
âI will, Uncle. You too. Send my love to Aunt.â
With a cheery farewell, the call ends. You take a deep breath and try to recall the last time you went home to the countryside for a short visit three years ago.
Your auntâs fragrant chicken soup. Your uncleâs over-interest in your knowledge about a shoe brand he liked. Your cousinâs feeble attempts to get freebies from when you did a checkup on the child of the owner of a popular makeup brand. Laughter, togetherness, the feeling of finally having someone to come home to.
But there would be no internet, no socialising. No fine dining, no external staff for the cleaning and dirty work you didnât like. No polished floors, air conditioning wherever you went.
It was a win-lose.
Yet the feeling of not going back irked you, an emotion you couldn't place.
Five minutes. Ten minutes as you considered your situation.
Three months to do whatever you liked.
After a power struggle with your mind, you sat up, inhaling deeply and then letting it go. A day trip. You could spare a day trip visiting your old home, before you came back to reality, where you should be, instead of reminiscing on memories long past.
You were going home, and Brooklyn Nine-Nine would have to wait.

You hate it here.
Your heels dig into the rough gravel as you step out of your car. A bad choice to wear Louboutins, you surmise, as you reach into the backseat for your bag.
You had decided to go to the beach, before maybe grabbing a bite at a cafe, taking some pictures in a weak attempt to relive your childhood memories, before the one-hour-fifteen-minute drive home. It wasn't as if you were here to visit anyone, you reasoned to yourself as you picked your way through the old country road you remembered all too well -- there was absolutely no need to stay any longer than you had to.
Besides, after the abrupt death of your parents in a car accident midway through your diploma, you had sworn to leave the moment you could, the memories of two people who would never return sitting heavily on you.
And that was what you had done, a mere two months after receiving a full university scholarship. You had left and never looked back since.
Nostalgia rushes through you as you find a less sandy and hot spot and sit down, careful not to get any sand into your precious heels. The beach is mostly empty, save for a few people swimming, surfing, or having a family day out. Your gaze goes out to sea, hugging your legs to yourself.
You silently hype yourself up. No more sad memories. You didn't have time for that. You would take this chance to wallow for a bit, and then you would look forward. Better things were coming for you.
A full thirty minutes pass before you feel yourself about to combust. You get up, wincing at the roughness of the sand on your hands. As a kid, you loved the beach. But it was different now. You were a grown-up, and grown-ups don't soak in self-pity. Or sand.
You struggle back on to solid land, deciding to get a quick coffee at a small cafe before leaving. As you approach a store with the large sign reading 'Hwang's Coffee Corner', you reach for the aged, wooden door and pull it open.
The cafe smells not of coffee, but of a soft, vanilla-like aroma from a scented candle nearby. A middle-aged woman sitting at the counter humming to trot music looks up. Your instincts, long honed by long rides on lifts and shopping trips, force an up-down look at her as she stands to welcome you. Thick, curly, and unstyled hair held back with a purple headband, too-pink lipstick, an old blue dress, worn-out sandals.
You force yourself to ignore the judgmental comment at the tip of your tongue and grit out a barely-there hello. The woman smiles, big and unrestricted, introduces herself as Ms Hwang, the owner, and asks for your order.
"Just a latte, please."
"Got that!" Ms Hwang chirps, and you cringe at how loud her voice is, ringing in the silence of the cafe.
You fish in your bag for your wallet, deciding to just get a takeaway cup instead, and you pull out your credit card.
Ms Hwang shakes her head, "We only take cash."
Your face burns as you look back up at the woman. "Um..sorry. I don't have cash on me."
Her eyebrows shoot up. "What?"
"I only have credit cards."
"Oh. Well, it won't be of much use. The card machine hasn't been working for a while anyway, we only take cash." Ms Hwang's tone is slightly dismissive, as she taps away on the cashier screen.
Your face drops. What place doesn't take credit cards now?
Turns out the question was said out loud and not in your head. Ms Hwang looks up, eyes slightly wide at the intrusive question.
"What are you trying to say?" Her voice isn't that of the friendly lady-next-door anymore and has a sharpness to it. You sigh in mild irritation and reply. "Forget it. I'll try to get cash first."
"No, you won't! Explain what you meant. Are you trying to say this store is outdated?" The woman seems to be getting agitated, and you really don't want to have a conflict in the middle of this god-forsaken town right now.
"No, I-"
"Oh, Wonwoo!" The angry owner suddenly exclaims to someone who just entered the cafe, the bell above the door announcing their arrival. "Help me over here! This lady thinks the cafe is outdated just because she doesn't have cash and can't pay!"
You roll your eyes and turn around, ready to defend your case to the next person who is clearly going to take her side after her accusation.
Everything you were going to say flies right out of the window when you see him.
Clean-cut, damp, dark brown hair, strong and defined eyebrows that are currently raised at the unfolding situation, and deep-set eyes. Dressed in a simple flannel outerwear with a T-shirt and jeans, glasses perched on his sharp nose bridge, he looks every bit like a local heartthrob. You subconsciously recall your outfit.
But this heartthrob is currently striding in behind the counter, next to Ms Hwang, and raising his eyebrows at you in mild disapproval.
"You really shouldn't have said that." His voice is deep and rich. You snap yourself back to the present moment, and begin to protest hotly. "I said nothing of the sort! I only hold cards in my wallet, and she said that cards wouldn't work since the machine was broken. And that's strange, isn't it? Every place takes cards now-"
"Strange?" The man- Wonwoo, you remember, interrupts, head tilting in curiousity as he surveys you. "Strange how?"
You huff impatiently. Seriously, does no one here know the wonders of credit card transactions?
"Go to any shop in the city. I'll bet you anything they take cards-"
"This isn't the city, miss," he shrugs. "Most stores here usually take cash. And you should probably be carrying cash around with you anyway."
You sigh, massaging your temples. "Look, this is getting more complicated than it has to be, alright? I'll get some cash first, and-"
"How do I know you're not a swindler?" Ms Hwang cuts in, narrowing her eyebrows.
You sigh. She's not easy, that much you've figured out. You didn't even get the coffee, and she's already making a big fuss.
"I can leave my bag with you while I'm at it." You shrug the handbag off your shoulder, wincing internally when your beloved Marc Jacobs lands on the aged wooden counter. Ms Hwang immediately descends upon it, glaring at you.
"All this for a coffee?" Wonwoo asks, bemused, as he runs his hands through his hair.
"I'm proving that I'm not a con job, mister." You glare at him. "I don't even need the coffee, forget it!"
He shrugs, half-amused by your outburst. "Okay then, Miss Not-Con-Job. Hope you get the cash."

The waves are large today, Wonwoo muses as he hoists his surfing board out to the water and mounts it, careful to tuck his glasses away. Before long, he's soaring and cruising, sea air hitting his face in a cooling spray.
Humming to himself, he gets to his feet easily on the board, and sways with the water's direction.
This is life, he sighs out in relief. As his gaze crosses the beach he loves so dearly, of the laughing children and fond parents, he catches sight of a woman. Sitting all alone, hugging her legs to herself as she gazes out at the very sea he's cruising through.
No one should look sad in a place as beautiful as this, he thinks. And while his view keeps on wandering across the villagers' familiar faces, across the infinite span of the sea, he finds that his eyes, too, keep going back to her.

02. on a whim

đŒ warnings: squids, slight cursing, mentions of a horrible ex
đŒ word count: 2.1k

"Never should've come here," you mutter angrily to yourself as you stride back down the rocky path. "You have great luck, huh? No cash, and ran into a crazy woman and a crazy man together. Great."
You decide to go around and try finding an ATM. It can't be that hard, there must be a bank around here or something.
But after twenty minutes, your side of the small, idyllic town comes up empty.
Now you're panicking. You're virtually cut off from everything in the town. As backward as it is, you can't go about without money. And you really don't have the energy to go back and face Ms Hwang and Wonwoo.
Shit.
"Need a bit of help?"
You whirl around and there stands Wonwoo, who looks amused. He's holding your Marc Jacobs, which you grab from him in palpable relief.
You can see why he seems humoured by you. You probably do look insane, standing near the beach looking so frazzled, a stark opposite from every peaceful passersby. But you don't have the patience to talk to the man right about now.
"Look, if this is about the coffee-" He begins.
"It's not!"
"I've calmed Ms Hwang down. She knows you didn't mean it like that."
You roll your eyes and turn away. "Thanks," You say sarcastically.
"You didn't, right?" He adds, ignoring your jab.
"So what if I did?" You snipe back in annoyance.
"Then that would be a waste, offending someone who can help you."
You narrow your eyes at him suspiciously. "You?"
He shrugs (for maybe the third time since meeting you) nonchalantly. "Don't need it? Alright then."
"Wait-" You mentally kick yourself at how desperate you sound. "I'm not usually like this. I'm not a disorganised person."
"Uh-huh," he says. The word alone, and you know he doesn't believe you.
You groan in frustration, raking your hands through your hair. "What now? I can't find an ATM."
"Yeah, the town council just started setting it up, so even if you go to the bank now, you can't use it yet."
"Bank...? You know what, never mind. How do I get money?"
He smirks, and seemingly without a care in the world, replies, "You earn it and show her, I guess."

"No. Absolutely not."
"I couldn't get another job for you at short notice. Get in there."
"No!"
"Do you want to pay Ms Hwang back and settle the situation or not?"
"..."
You unwillingly take the bright yellow rubber gloves he has outstretched to you.
"What am I supposed to do?" You cringe as you pull the gloves on, trying to avoid the spray of seawater that comes soaring toward you as the first fish boat docks.
"Simple. You pull in the squid nets and help detangle them. And then you pour them into buckets and bring it over there." Wonwoo points, while shielding his eyes from the sun, to a group of chattering elderly women on the other side of the dock.
You visibly cringe again as you catch sight of flopping fish in the nets, and his eyes narrow at you. "Don't look like that. It's an honest job. How most of us earn a living around here."
"I-I've just never done this before -- oh that is disgusting!" You yelp and shrink back as a fisherman hauls a soaking net of fish, reeking of seaweed, over his shoulder, greeting Wonwoo cheerfully as he passes you. You wonder if Wonwoo really does know everyone in this town.
Wonwoo sighs and tiredly motions for you to get on the dock. "I'll get going after I settle you in. Don't make trouble for the fishermen."
Uncertainly, you climb into the wooden platform, and a fisherman offers you his hand. You take one look at his hand, rough with toil and wrinkled from the water, and decline. Wonwoo stares at you.
âHow much am I earning?â You call out as you struggle to step away from the dirty fish nets.
âMinimum wage, of course,â Wonwoo calls back, arms folded as he scans your current position.
You stop in your tracks and look up. Your quick calculation shows thatâs slightly less than ten minutesâ worth of fees for your consultation in the clinic. You open your mouth to argue about the proportion of your hard work to the meager results, but he hefts his bag and starts striding away.
âWait! Where are you going?â
âYou want me to stay here and boss you around?â
Never mind. âForget it. Leave me alone.â
He rolls his eyes. âI wasnât planning to stay even if you wanted me to. Iâll come over later.â
The fisherman beckons you towards the docks, and with a shudder, you walk towards him.

Wonwoo canât believe himself.
Itâs been almost three hours after he left you at the docks, and heâs on his way, as promised, to give you your pay.
Heâs half expecting you to be kicking up a fuss with the poor fishermen and the chatty grandmas who handle the squid, and making everyoneâs life miserable, but to his surpriseâŠyouâre not.
Sure, the grandmas donât seem to like you as much as they like him, but they seem to tolerate you enough to let you sit with them and learn how to remove the insides of a squid.
And youâre not shying away anymore. Not cringing and making stupid remarks about how gross it is. Youâre sitting there, eyes trained in concentration as a grandma directs you.
Wonwoo smiles slightly before he knows it.

âYour pay,â the man himself gives you a small stack of cash.
You take it from him and sigh at how small it is. âGot it. Iâm going back to the cafe.â
âJust give it to me. Iâll pass it to Ms Hwang for you, donât think she wants to see you right now.â
You eye him suspiciously and his eyes widen comically.
âIâm not stealing your money!â He says exasperatedly.
You give in and hand him the stack. He counts out a few notes, presumably the cost of the coffee you didn't even get, and passes the rest back to you.
You shrug as you put the cash in your wallet. âAnything else?" Your voice isn't the most polite, but you're tired, so, so exhausted, and all you want to do is go home and crash.
âGoing home already?â
âIâve spent enough time here.â
He raises his eyebrows. âI see.â
He doesnât say anything as he watches you leave.

âWhat?â You havenât left the town. Youâre standing next to your car, furiously talking into the phone.
âRight?! Itâs insane! Of all the things in the worldâŠâ Itâs your friend, Delia, a pediatric nurse, on the other end.
âYou have to be kidding me. There is no way I can work on the same floor as him.â
âHimâ being your ex. By far the ugliest breakup you had, in which the fights seemed never-ending, the slamming of doors a normal occurrence ever since his cheating. No more date nights, or any occasion that had you feeling breathless like when you met him. Stinging words had been exchanged, till the one that had gone too far: "You have a lot of gall saying all that when your parents are gone because of you."
And you had gotten out. No one should have used that against you.
Your professions had been a common denominator that drew you to each other, and it seemed that would be what reunited you.
"I'm not doing this," you snap into the phone. "I'm not starting a five-year contract with that man across the hall."
Your friend agrees before you end the call. You send a hurried email to the hospital, requesting extra discussion about your placement, before tugging at your hair in frustration. Tears burn in your eyes at the thought of your ex.
"Weren't you leaving?" You turn only to see Wonwoo standing there, hands in his pockets, his haversack slung over one shoulder in a casual, boyish fashion.
You hastily wipe your tears, as if he hadn't already seen them. His eyes change a fraction in concern.
"Yes. I was."
"What's wrong?"
"None of your business."
He shakes his head at you. "You really need to work on that sharp tongue of yours." Raising a hand in goodbye, he says, "Then I'll get going. A kid in the neighbourhood needs me."
"What for?" The words come out before you can stop them.
He looks back to you, bemused. "What?"
You swallow. "I'm a pediatrician. If a child is hurt or something, I can deal with it."
He tilts his head. "Well...yeah, the kid is running a high fever or something. Might be the flu, we get that a lot around here."
"Okay," you say, typing something in your phone. "Lead the way."
"You're serious?"
"Is there a hospital or clinic you can get them to?" You ask, eyes still on your phone as you note things down, as you do for occasional house calls.
"The nearest hospital is a 45-minute drive away since the only clinic here closed some time back. We usually just go to the town pharmacy when we need anything," Wonwoo prattles as if he's said it a thousand times.
You frown at him in disapproval. "Why wouldn't you have a clinic here? It's a whole town full of people."
"This isn't the city, miss," Wonwoo repeats. "You can't really expect everything you have in the city to be here too."
"Don't you think that's such a lame excuse? You can't even handle any health problems," you counter, and he goes quiet, raising his brows inquisitively. "And my name is Y/N. Don't waste my time. Let's go."

"38.7 degrees," you say out loud, sitting on the floor of the family's humble home with Wonwoo next to you. The young mother clutches her shivering son to her a little tighter, looking panicked. "Oh, what should I do? He couldn't eat anything and he got dizzy, and-"
You look up from the small pile of supplies you got from the small pharmacy, and reply, "Don't worry. It should just be a slightly more severe cold than usual. He's pushing a fever because his body is fighting an infection, and the body's response is why he can't eat anything right now. But I'll get him to swallow a bit of water with paracetamol, and sponge his forehead. It should break the fever. For the dizziness, it's because his immune system is affected by the cold. Let him sleep through it, and once the fever breaks, he'll be just fine."
The mother seems concerned still, and so you continue to placate her. "We're closer to the sea here, so colds like these are common because of the cooler weather. And he's still young. Kids tend to be more susceptible to sickness. This is still perfectly normal, so don't worry too much. I promise he'll be okay."
The mother seems less panicky and begins tending to her son after a brief thank-you. Wonwoo turns to look at you, your eyes still fixated on the duo. You just spoke so much, so gently, to a mother and child you didn't even know.

"So, you're a doctor, huh?" It's after everything has settled. You and Wonwoo are walking down the narrow path together.
"Pediatrician. I can do family medicine in general too, I just specialise in pediatrics."
"The town could do with a doctor like you," he muses. "Better than the villagers having to travel so far all the time."
"I was thinking about that."
"What?"
You shrug. "It's not right that there's no doctor here at all."
"Mhm. I've been nagging the town council for a small clinic at least, but they haven't been able to find a doctor who can stay long-term over here." Wonwoo kicks a small pebble with his well-worn boots, and it skittles off the path into the grass.
"I have a few months before I have to head back for my job."
"Uh-huh..."
You breathe deeply. The next sentence seems so daunting. "I can do a short attachment here. Clinic appointments or something."
He raises his eyebrows. "I thought you hated it here."
"I do." You reply with no hesitation. "I...I just don't like the idea of kids not having a doctor around. Especially with the dirt and sea air and germs around here and all that."
"Whatever you say, Miss Doctor." He's smiling slightly as you ramble.
"It's Y/N."
"Got it, Miss Doctor. And I'm Wonwoo. Jeon Wonwoo. People around here just call me Chief Jeon." He holds his hand out to shake yours.
"Okay, Chief Jeon." You turn to face him, ignoring his offered hand. He retracts it, looking even more amused. "I'll do this three-month arrangement. In return, I need a favour."
"Name it."
"Fix the card machines."
He lets out a chuckle at your firm order. "You drive a hard deal. Consider it done."

hii yenaaa, it's me again! i just wanna ask your opinion hhu as taylor swift's song???
- đŸ
seungcheol
wildest dreams. it's kind of an incredibly, almost painfully romantic song. it's kind of a whirlwind romance song? while it's certainly a little hopeless, there's yearning there, and there's also so much vivid, vibrant love at the same time, a kind of possession, of protectiveness even so. it's seungcheol because of the desperate, helpless love it describes, a 'i couldn't help but fall for you' vibe that is so him.
wonwoo
willow. the acoustic vibes of this song feel very wonwoo. there's a sort of undying, eternal love in the lyrics, an idea of always coming back to him, of forever finding endless comfort and wonder and new experiences while loving him. there's a certain domesticity to this song, and honestly the best way to describe it really is eternal love, constant love, comfortable and thrilling and warm all at once.
mingyu
daylight. it's a little youthful, bright, like mingyu. the song just exudes so much "happy ever after" vibes, at the end of a perfect romantic novel, and that's so mingyu. it's the epilogue song, heart filled with warm love, his smiles as sweet and gentle as the chorus of the song. it's hopeful, optimistic, beautiful.
vernon
we are never ever getting back together. lyrics aside, there's a lot of feel-good energy in this song which feels so vernon. honestly lots of taylor's old songs feel like they can match him a lot, because there's so much young energy, feeling a little like a boundless puppy, and i don't know. the self-assurance, the brightness, the pure pop, light feeling is something that just fits vernon.

seventeenâs reaction to you asking them if they knew how to whistle and kissing them as they do it
pairing: seventeen (ot13) x gn!reader genre: fluff word count: 0.7k warning(s): none
requested by @vi-chan07: Idk if you are taking recs or not . But I really want svt's reaction to their S/o doing this to them

SEUNGCHEOL
would be mock offended that you asked him if he knew how to whistle (bc of course he does!)
would pout and furrow his brows at you before finally whistling
is so confused at first when you kiss his protruding lips, but breaks into the dopiest smile right after
would make kissy faces at you, demanding for you to do it again, whining and sulking if you refuse to
JEONGHAN
heâd probably see it coming ngl
the gears are turning in his head as soon as you pop the question
and like the absolute tease he is, he wonât whistle until you explicitly tell him that you were trying to kiss him
eventually does it just to see you smile (and also bc he would never say no to your kisses but you donât need to know that!)
JOSHUA
whistles without thinking too much of it
is so endeared when you kiss him
complains when you pull away and rushes to kiss you back
would definitely start doing it back to you often even though you already know whatâs coming (but you still play along anyway, his reaction after he kisses your pouting lips is too cute to pass on)
JUNHUI
is suspicious, but whistles anyway
becomes so giddy when you kiss him
acts all like âi already knew what you were trying to do!â even though he really didnât
is badgering you for more kisses after bc one is not enough
SOONYOUNG
would whistle without a question bc you asked him to
eyes go wide when you press a kiss to his pouting lips before turning into the giddiest mess ever
is such a giggling mess after and would drape himself over you and not let go
plants wet kisses all over your face in return
WONWOO
finds it amusing
knows you probably have a trick up your sleeve but how could he ever refuse you?
so he whistles, and is taken aback when you press your lips hard against his
would chase after your lips as you pull away and it becomes a makeout session after that
JIHOON
youâd probably have to explicitly tell him to whistle bc heâll literally just answer your question and call it a day
face turns so red when you kiss him it takes everything in you not to take a picture and show it to the boys some time
gets so so shy after, he doesnât say a single word (his mind is reeling and unable to produce a single coherent thought)
tells you âthat was slickâ but he actually means âdo it again pleaseâ
MINGHAO
is definitely giving you that judgemental stare (but he does it anyway)
is pleasantly surprised when you plant your lips on his pouting ones
would tell you that youâve been hanging out with jeonghan too much lately but heâd be unable to hide the wide grin spreading across his face
looks at you with those lovesick eyes and says âif you wanted a kiss, just say soâ
MINGYU
thinks youâre teasing him
goes all âof course i know how to whistle!â with a pout on his face
gets all giddy when you kiss him before he actually whistles
is all like âi knew you were gonna do thisâ after you pull away, so you kiss him again to shut him up (just like mingyu wanted đ€)
SEOKMIN
giggles at your out of pocket question at first, but does it without asking much
literally squeaks when you press your lips against his in surprise
would wrap his arms around you and whine about how you caught him off guard after
proceeds to pepper kisses all over your face and would be insistent on doing it back to you to âreturn the loveâ
SEUNGKWAN
is skeptical at first bc he thinks youâre challenging him
scoffs and does it
is so so flustered once you kiss him heâs stunned into silence
would whine about how itâs unfair with the dopiest smile on his face (and then heâd ask you to do it again shamelessly)
VERNON
heâd literally just go âyeah, i do.â and then move on with his day
youâd have to ask him to whistle for him to actually do it bro is dense as hell
gets so confused when you kiss him it takes him a while to get what you were trying to do
the biggest, most lovesick smile forms on his face after he understands the situation, and the tips of his ears turn the brightest shade of red
CHAN
does it without a hint of doubt
gets so flustered once you kiss him, face turning so red
heâd probably malfunction for a while (heâs so shy its so cute TT)
would probably ask you to do it again (and again and again)

a/n: hehe i had a lot of fun writing this i hope it was a fun read too

CUTE CUTE
i want to spend this whole night with you ..

doctor!seungcheol x reader 4.3k words, fluff, minor angst, some jealousy, reader has a broken ankle, this is probably incredibly inaccurate.. based off the one week i spent doing work experience at a hospital, part of waves will take us far away series !
when youâd managed to wind up in the hospital for breaking your arm you were dreading it more than anything, that is until you were assigned to the young doctor who found you too pretty to ignore.
âmom i told you itâs fine. itâs probably just a little sprain itâs been worse beforeâ there was honestly no point in trying to reason with your mother over the phone like this, you know sheâd never give in.
you had to admit it did warm your heart hearing the concern in your motherâs voice, but not enough to convince you to head to the hospital. yes, your ankle felt like it was two minutes away from practically falling off of your limbs but you wouldâve rather that than spend the next week in the hospital and the next few months having to go to regular check-ups.
âhoney, nothing is going to happen to you at the hospital, please stop being paranoid. look, if you leave it any longer your itâll probably get worse, youâre better off getting it done with nowâ
she had a point. if you put this off you might wind up having to stay there even longer. a deep breath escaped you as you nodded to yourself, âalright sure iâll head to the hospital thenâ

limping as you got out of the taxi and through the hospital doors, you cringed at both the pain and the chemical scent of artificial fragrances hitting your nose. you rubbed the hand sanitizer into your hand while you both stood in a queue for the receptionist desk. two minutes and you already want to go home. great.
âyes, how can i help you?â the receptionist smiled at you, fingers already getting ready to search your name in the system.
âuh hi i booked an appointment for a sprained ankleâ you told her handing over your ID.
the receptionist scanned it for a few seconds, the quick clicking of the keys catching you a little off guard. after youâd confirmed the details for her she handed you a small note with the room and doctor name.
you limped walked down the hospital wards, wincing while you searched for the room you were supposed to be in. the hospital was a lot busier today- at least compared to the last time you visited. to be fair that was at least two years ago so you wouldnât know if this was considered busy anymore.
double checking the room number, you knocked the door pushing it open when, youâre assuming, dr lee let you in. he gave you a cheerful smile, motioning you to the seat while he took his own behind the computer.
âhi miss yn, you said you were here for a sprained ankle?â he waited for your nod, âno problem we just need to run a few tests to see how bad it is, if youâre fine you can be on your way within the hourâ
the thought immediately lifted your mood. you spent the next few minutes going through the tests with dr lee, wincing whenever he touched a certain part of your ankle, feeling bad whenever he apologised profusely. he looked confused for a few seconds, checking back on the notes he was given on you, âmiss, iâm afraid this isnât a sprained ankle. from the looks of it i think it may be fractured, weâre going to have to run an x-rayâ
he left the room for a few minutes to get everything for the x-ray ready, giving you a few minutes to wallow in your self pity. âgreat it just had to be fractured. walking around on it couldnât have helped either..â
when dr lee returned he returned with someone else. you scanned his jacket for a name tag eyes relaxing as they set on the âdr choiâ in all caps.
âdr choiâ smiled widely at you before shaking your hand, âhi iâm dr choi, unfortunately dr lee is being called in for something else so iâll be taking over your x-ray if thatâs fine with you?â
oh it was definitely fine with you.
you nodded, turning your head so you could focus on the clock rather than dr choiâs far too perfect face.

the x-rays technically went pretty quick but getting them done felt like hours. dr choi and his stupid too handsome face- âyn? yn you there?â your eyes went wide when you saw dr choiâs face only a few inches away from your own, apparently heâd been trying to get your attention for 30 seconds.
âyouâll have to wait about a half hour until the results come through so for now how about you just keep that ankle raised, alright? iâll be here finishing your paperwork so if anything starts hurting a lot out of nowhere let me know. oh and i might need to be asking you a few questions tooâ
âoh thatâs fine and thank youâ you nodded as he smiled at you, wheeling his chair to the computer and loading up your file. the room was silent for a few minutes so you took it as an opportunity to text back your mom, assuring her everything was fine and that the doctor wouldnât have to amputate your leg.
âso you thought it was a sprain?â dr choiâs deep voice cut through the silence making you sit up slightly as you answered him.
âoh yeah. it was pretty swollen and when iâd read up on it all i saw was that swelling was usually a sign of a sprain, thought it wasnât too big a dealâ you shrugged your shoulders. you saw an expression flick on seungcheolâs face for a split second; he looked- annoyed?
âif something like this happens again yn please donât wait until the end to come hereâ he looked so serious. after seeing his intimidating stare, you wouldnât have been able to say no if you wanted to.
âyou sure you just donât want to see me more often, dr choi?â you teased in hopes it would lighten the mood. as soon as the words left your mouth though you regretted it- what if youâd crossed a line? surely a doctor doesnât want to flirt with a patient.
much to your surprise however, the young doctor only shot you a smile before speaking âsince weâre probably going to be seeing each other often why donât you just get used to calling me seungcheol?â
heat rose to your cheeks, dr choi- seungcheol, never wiping the grin off of his face. he only turned back to the computer after you nodded.
âhow did you manage to do that to it anyway?â it took you a few seconds to register his question was referring to your ankle but you couldnât stop yourself growing embarrassed when dwelling back on the memory.
âi uh..â you trailed off, looking to the side. why were you so nervous? youâd easily told anyone else so why were you embarrassed telling seungcheol. âjust a little accident, i fell trying to reach somethingâ
seungcheol looked at you unamused and youâd wished you had told him something else, now you just look like an idiot in front of him.
âwhen did that happen exactly?â
âuh about a week ago? something like thatâ
âyou just walked on your ankle normally for a week?â you looked flustered at his tone, âwell no wonder it ended up getting worse. if something like that happens yn you should at least book an appointment with your doctor if you donât want to head hereâ
the way he talked to you, it sounded he was so caring. suppose thatâs what you need as a doctor. still, even if it was part of his job, you couldnât help the way he made your heart beat a little faster and cheeks grow a little warmer.
âsorry. the hospital just intimidates me so i guess i was just hoping even if it was a little sprain itâll heal on its own as long as i donât put too much pressure on itâ
seungcheol nodded at your words, getting something from the desk before turning back to the computer. you could see now that he had a pair of glasses resting on his nose bridge, you hate to admit it but it made him look even cuter than before.
âoh you need glasses?â why did you ask him that? thatâs such a stupid thing to ask.
âhm? oh these? nah theyâre just blue light glassesâ he said with a small smile, continuing his work.
youâd spent the rest of the half hour scrolling on your phone and texting your friends about where you were. your friend jeonghan promising you a bouquet of flowers from the shop when he comes to visit you. you didnât mention the cute doctor you had that you definitely did not have a crush on. it was just attraction, thatâs totally normal.
âoh your x-ray results are backâ seungcheol told you, picking it up from the printer and wheeling his chair over to the bed you were on. âalright so itâs definitely a fracture and luckily for you, itâs not too serious. as you can see there only one bone cracked which means you most likely wonât be needing surgery. but considering how reckless you are, weâll be giving you a cast and iâll check to see if you can approved for crutches tooâ
despite all this information there was only one thing you really wanted to know. âso when can i go home?â
seungcheol let out a sigh, âafter we get the cast on you and get the okay for the crutches. iâll send the request in now should take about an hour or two, alright?â
âyeah thatâs fineâ
itâd been about twenty minutes since youâd gotten the cast on and you can already feel it start to annoy you. this was going to make your life hell for the next- wait how long do you have to wear this thing?
you looked over to seungcheol who was still busy at work, you really did not want to bother him. but then again he did say that you could ask him anything and itâd be fine.
âhey seungcheol?â he turned his head toward you humming, âi was just wondering how long i need to keep this thing on forâ
he turned his body completely toward you, âthereâs no guaranteed date, usually it takes around 6-8 weeks to heal on its own but it depends on everyoneâs own body and how well you take care of itâ a teasing lilt in his voice as he told you the last part.
âvery funnyâ you jokingly rolled you eyes at him.
âitâs not my fault you couldnât take care of yourselfâ he chuckled, spinning his chair around to continue sorting through his files.
eventually you could feel yourself growing more and more tired and before you knew it, you were out cold.

when you woke up there was a blanket covering your frame, the room being illuminated by the small desk lamp and seungcheolâs computer. you groaned a little, stretching your limbs as you rose from your nap. just how long had you been sleeping?
seungcheol heard you and realised youâd woken up, he stood and walked toward you. âsleep well?â
you laughed a little, âyeah i did, what time is it by the way my phones deadâ you told him waving your phone that had the red battery sign on it.
âpass it to me, i have a charger you can use it. also itâs uhhhâ he looked over at his watch, âjust a little past midnightâ
âmidnight? oh wow how long was that napâ you laughed lightly. âalright well i should get going thenâ
âdo you have a ride?â seungcheol eyed you cautiously.
âafter my phoneâs done charging i can call jeonghan he usually stays up lateâ you said more to yourself then to seungcheol.
âyoon jeonghan?â
âyeah.. you know him too?â
seungcheol cleared his throat, âwe met a couple months ago. heâs a florist right? we usually get a lot of bouquets from his shop and heâll sometimes stick around after delivering them. i can call him for you if you donât wanna wait for your phone to finish chargingâ
you nodded and mumbled a âthanksâ when he handed you his phone. on the fourth ring jeonghan picked up.
âhello? seungcheol youâre up at this hour? usually youâre in bed at 10pm sharpâ you heard your friend on the other side of the call.
âjeonghan itâs meâ
âyn? whatâve you got seungcheolâs phone for? are you two..?â he trailed off at the end and you knew exactly what he was implying.
âno you idiot. my phones dead and iâm still at the hospital, think you can come pick me up?â
âoh yeah sure. you feeling any better?â
âyeah thanks, text either of us when youâre here okay? byeâ you pressed the red hang up sign, handing the phone back to seungcheol.
ten minutes later, jeonghan had texted you that he was waiting outside, reception wouldnât let him in at this hour. with seungcheolâs help you got to the parking lot, jeonghan parking closest to the entrance so that you wouldnât have to walk too much.
âiâll see you again in a weekâ seungcheol waved you off with a smile.
âsee you later, dr choiâ you teased him.
when you were completely buckled up in jeonghanâs car and heâd finally left the hospital parking lot he finally asked you what heâd been dying to know for the last fifteen minutes.
âso you and cheol?â he asked you, and you could hear the smirk in his voice.
âheâs just my doctor calm down. iâm not going to try making a move on my doctorâ you giggled, âhe was pretty cool though.. i guessâ you started out the window, trying to desperately fight back the smile when the thoughts of seungcheol flooded your mind.
âoh yeah youâre gone for him alreadyâ jeonghan laughed.
âitâs been a day! i couldnât possibly like him that much after a few hours come on jeonghan iâm not that badâ
âi donât know, i wouldnât be so sure. i mean itâs not like youâre the only one who feels like that. cheol couldâve woken you up and went home but he didnât. he worked overtime to make sure you were alrightâ
âokay now youâre just being crazy. he probably had his own work to do. what kind of guy would do that for some random person they met two hours before?â you scoffed, throwing him a questioning look.
he shrugged, âiâm just saying what iâve observedâ
you shook your head, remembering what seungcheol had told you, âwait why do you stick around the hospital so much? even after delivering the orders?â
âoh that..â jeonghan was.. blushing? youâve known him since you were ten and you donât think youâve ever seen him blushing, âiâm uh.. friends with one of the surgeons. i usually stick around talking to her and then met cheol and shua. but enough about me whatâd they say about your ankle?â
âhm? oh yeah they said it usually takes around 6 weeks to heal, maybe even two months. just gotta be careful with it now that itâs in the castâ

four weeks later you'd returned to the hospital for your checkup, an extra pip in your step despite the crutches. youâd been having regular weekly checkups with seungcheol ever since that day and you enjoy the time spent with him more than anything. the hospital was done up nicely today, decorations everywhere in time for valentineâs day.
your ankle was heeling up nicely, so youâve been told. if it kept up how it was youâd definitely be out of the cast at the six week mark. when you reached seungcheolâs door you knocked on it a few times before he opened it for you with a smile.
âmy favourite patient, howâve you been? ankle not giving you any new trouble right?â he told you as he helped you up on the bed.
âiâve been good thanks and no, itâs been the sameâ you returned his wide grin. it was a long shot but you were secretly hoping heâd do something for valentineâs day. you guys had spent the last few weeks subtly flirting and the chemistry between you both was undeniable.
the checkup went smoothly as usual and seungcheol assured you that you were on a steady path to being completely recovered. as you were about to leave you saw dr hong waiting outside the door, holding a.. bouquet of red roses? seungcheol let him in and took the roses from him.
âjeonghan just left these for you, said you ordered them?â dr hong told him, smiling at you.
âthanks shuaâ he sighed.
you didnât want to invade his privacy but you couldnât help the way that the âto youâ card just happened to be right in front of your face. you wished it wasnât though after seeing who the flowers were really for.
you felt a knot forming in your throat and cleared your throat, âuh iâll see you next week doctorâ you smiled at him tight lipped, not waiting for his response before you headed out the door.
jeonghan was probably around and couldâve given you a ride but you donât think you could last in a car ride with him. he was far too good at reading emotions and would he able to tell somethings up with you in a minute.
sighing, you opened up the app for an uber and waited in the hospital cafe until you got the notification it was here. the entire car ride you tried your hardest to not think about seungcheol and how sweet he was to you, and definitely not about how the flowers he bought were for someone else and not you.

itâd been a week since your last appointment with seungcheol, and a week after valentines. you felt so stupid and so disgusted at yourself. this entire time youâd been shamelessly flirting with someone who couldnât want less to do with you. someone who already had a girlfriend that he was buying a bouquet of red roses for.
you had an appointment tomorrow and you werenât sure how you were going to face seungcheol, it was way too embarrassing to even think about. sighing, you picked up your keys before deciding to go out on a walk. there was a spot you always came to whenever you felt like this. it was past a little public trail near a few fields, everything always felt so calm there.
the only problem was that getting there was usually difficult even when you didnât have a cast on your leg. it was bound to be even worse now. regardless, you started walking down the trail anyway, trying your hardest to avoid stepping into the dips in the ground too harshly. however careful you were though, the path was too randomly uneven so you couldnât avoid harshly coming down on one. and it just had to be on your injured leg.
a sharp pain shooting through your ankle as you winced in pain. you sat on some of the grass near the trail and tried keeping your leg as elevated as you could. even if you could get the pain to alleviate, you were still only halfway down the path and trying to go the full way was far too risky. sighing, you stood again to head back home instead, limping and wincing whenever your foot hit the ground a little hard.
eventually the pain was too much so you needed to take a break. even if you could get someone to pick you up, youâd still need to get through this trail to head back to where cars were able to drive anyway.
you stood again continuing your journey back until you heard someone call your name from behind. that canât be..?
âyn! just because i said your ankle was healing well does not mean you can pull something like this! are you crazy?â seungcheol told you, trying his best to not get mad but you could still tell he was frustrated. âwhat were you even here for?â
âi just wanted to get to that fieldâ you scoffed, âsurprised you even careâ you muttered the last part.
âexcuse me?â seungcheol looked at you intently.
âwhatever, i donât need to explain myself to youâ
âyn iâm your doctor-â
ânot right now. right now youâre not working so youâre just choi seungcheolâ you told him pointedly.
âyn why are you being like this? did something happen?â seungcheol told asked you hesitantly.
you put some distance between the two of you, âitâs not like i need to tell you any of this. weâre not friends and youâre not my boyfriend, so please do not pretend like you careâ you hated how your voice cracked slightly, tears welling up in your eyes. âbesides i donât think your girlfriend would really appreciate this so itâs better i just leaveâ
before you could leave you felt a strong hand gripping your forearm bringing you back toward him, âwhat the hell are you talking about? what girlfriend?â
if you hadnât seen the evidence yourself you wouldâve believed him considering how convincing his confused face looks.
âyn listen to me, i donât even have a girlfriend, if i did i would not have the spent the last month thinking of ways to ask you out after your ankle was fineâ
âhuh? but- but i saw it! that day- with the flowers! they said to-â
âyn those were for my brother..â he interrupted you, amusement pulling at his features.
âyouâre asking out your brother?â you shouted.
âno you idiot! ew! let me explain. my brother needed to get his girlfriend flowers for valentines and i told him about jeonghan. so he asked me to pick them up for himâ seungcheol laughed lightly, holding your shoulders so that you knew not to interrupt him halfway through.
âoh.. well- any normal person would assume you were getting those for your own girlfriend!â you pouted trying to turn away from his teasing smirk.
âi donât really understand why you were jealous though.. hmmâ he put his finger on his chin sarcastically. he knew exactly why but still wanted to tease you for it, âoh! unless youâre jealousâ
you groaned, covering your face before seungcheol pried your hands away. his gaze on you was too much at once so you turned away attempting to walk away. youâd forgotten where you were though so your foot slipped hard on a whole in the ground again.
âshit- we need to get you back to the hospital. canât let you walk this whole way though..â you saw seungcheol think about it for a few seconds before he knelt down on the ground in front on you, âget on my back, iâll carry you back and then youâre headed straight to the hospital, iâll drop you offâ
âare you sure?â
âyes now hurry. canât believe you were willing to break your leg over something as petty as thisâ he scoffed jokingly as he made sure you were secure on his back.

it took about twenty minutes to get to the hospital and after they ran all the tests it was decided it was best for you to stay overnight. this time you werenât in seungcheolâs usual office but one in the emergency ward. you didnât like this one bit.
when seungcheol walked in he smiled when he met your gaze, âhey, everything alright?â
âwell all things considered itâs not too bad i guessâ you said sarcastically drawing a laugh out of seungcheol.
âyeah well i didnât ask you to make the injury worse, did i?â
you stayed quiet for a few seconds, âhey cheol, they wonât need to do a surgery right?â
seungcheol could see the nerves on your face and part of him felt so guilty for finding the pout on your face so cute.
âdonât worry about that pretty, you didnât manage to break another bone, you just undid some of what was already healed. itâll take a couple extra weeks to heal thatâs itâ he said, rubbing his hand over your head to provide comfort to your clearly distressed figure.
there was one more thing you needed to knowâand about us-â
âdo you really want me to confess to you in a stinky hospital room?â he laughed, âi had a whole plan in mind but now i gotta postpone it because little miss wants to have a broken leg decided she wants to stay in a cast even longerâ
âalright, but if youâre making me wait longer it better be goodâ you tried threatening him, fighting back your giggles.
âget some rest yn, jeonghan said a couple of your friends are visiting tomorrow. sleep well, iâll be here if you need anythingâ
during visiting hours the next day you saw seungcheol was right, your friends really did visit you; albeit your best friend was late because she got lost and had to have joshua escort her over.

âoh it feels so good to finally have that thing offâ you sighed, âit felt so suffocating after a while i was starting to forget what my leg felt likeâ
âyeah well make sure you donât wind up here again or else you might end up in something worse than a castâ seungcheol half heartedly scolded, âtry twisting it around. if it feels alright take a couple steps so we can just be completely sure, yeah?â
you did as seungcheol asked more than glad to say everything felt fine and back to normal. you laughed happily, smiling at him when he said you were officially healed and wouldnât need to keep the cast on.
you wanted to hug him but something stopped you, a twinge of excitement in your eyes when you cleared your throat ready to ask seungcheol, âso about that confession you promised me..â
he chuckled moving closer to you, both of you mirroring each otherâs wide grins, âyn. would you like to have dinner with me tonight? iâll tell you all about my feelings thenâ
âi would love toâ you giggled, finally hugging him.
