i was pretty conflicted about which way round to have these images, because you could read them either way? and it's a different vibe, you know? a vegeta who absolutely knows what his baby son's cheek feels like, all soft and warm and safe, and has to compare that to the future version who becomes cool and sticky with blood, versus a vegeta who never lays a hand on his son until it's his corpse and will always remember that sensation when he touches the baby version.

this is the way round they were in my head originally and although the second reading is certainly visceral it doesn't quite feel like the vegeta i have in my head.

ok bear with me - i don't think vegeta's response to trunks being born is entirely negative. Obviously he and bulma didn't sit down and plan to have a kid, and sure as hell vegeta doesn't have the first clue how to go about being a father. It's probably not something he thought he'd ever get to be. I think he probably does have some memories of his own father but nothing helpful. So this baby is actually Very Intimidating and to be intimidated is to be weak and vulnerable and therefore something vegeta must hide at all costs.

(i mean, i think he probably didn't enjoy the fact that trunks doesn't immediately look like him and he was at least a little bit jealous of goku having sons that resemble him so much. and ok future trunks looks like vegeta in his bone structure, his proportions, even his expressions, but none of that is very clear when he's a pudgey little baby. i don't think vegeta was thrilled exactly by the blue eyes and purple hair instead of black. i think he would internally chastise himself in freeza's voice like 'ah, once again, couldn't pull it off, couldn't even pass on your hair colour.' it's not logical by any means but trauma does that to a guy.)

but i don't think he hates or rejects that trunks is his. Going home to his family, his parents, is a fantasy i think vegeta has repressed and ignored for most of his life, knowing it's not possible no matter how much he longs for it. but bulma giving him that option of 'you could come home to this family instead' is probably painfully tempting.

so yeah i have this way round because i do think that vegeta at least touched his baby - felt his hair, his cheek, let him grab hold of his finger - before he has to take hold of the grown up version's dead body yeah
