Duke and Jason Being Hood Kids, Part 3

Tim’s their white boy.

Technically speaking, because all of Bruce’s adoptees (and singular blood son) but him are black and brown, he’s everybody’s white boy. Tim just has a special place with Duke and Jason because they’re all Gotham-born and raised.

He fits in perfectly because he never makes light of the obvious differences in their upbringings. Duke had community fish fries after church on Sundays when money was tight. Jason had mangú three times a day when his Mamí went on benders and all he had left was platanos. Tim had absent parents and a credit card with no limit. They are not the same.

The key is that Tim is genuinely interested in their lives without being a weird rich tourist. He has a blast at Gotham’s Caribbean Day Parade, waving Dominican flags with Jason and subtly taking care of the Riddler goons who try to interrupt the fun. He gets invited to a cookout with Duke (“Yes, Tim, the cookout is both metaphorical and literal. Do you want ribs or not?”) and learns to play Spades. He loses three games on purpose because damnit, Duke, Miss Shirley gave me a church mother hug and called me “honey.” Fuck you and this game.

“We’re rocking with Tim because Tim is rocking with us,” Duke explains to Dick, who pouts over being left out. “Maybe next time, Big Bird.”

So when Tim comes home from school with a bloody nose, saying Steve Brian in sixth period chemistry made some homophobic comments and backed them up with a fist, Duke knows exactly what to do.

“Some two first name having ass bitch,” Duke reports, holding the phone in place with his shoulder as he inspects Tim’s nose for breaks. “Steve Brian. He looks like his family tree’s a Christmas wreath.”

“Sounds pretentious,” Jason yells. Based on the background noise, he’s on his motorcycle. “And ugly. He Bristol?”

“Yes,” Tim interrupts. He winces when Duke shoves another cotton ball up his left nostril. “And you don’t need to do anything!”

“Boy, hush.” Duke slaps Tim’s hand away and keeps working. “The grownups are talking.”

“I’m older than you.”

“Not the point, Tim,” Jason and Duke respond in unison.

“He fucks with you, he fucks with us,” Jason shouts over the sound of traffic. “Them’s the rules.”

Tim sighs and slouches in his seat, crossing his arms. He’s in pain and embarrassed and angry, and listening to Duke and Jason plan to jump Steve makes him feel so helpless.

But more than anything else? Tim’s…kinda, sorta, really thankful. Nobody’s ever been so ready to fight for him before. He doesn’t know what to say.

“Thanks, guys,” he mutters. “I…yeah. Thanks.”

“No bigs, Timmy,” Jason answers. He’s speaking softly now. He must be parked outside already. “You want the first punch when we find him?”

“Yes, please.”

in primary school we had a creative writing assignment where we had to ‘write about a character in a new, strange situation!’ and i wrote about a squid that was somehow teleported from the ocean to the forest floor and slowly choked to death for two pages and i’ll never quite forget my teacher’s face because it turns out she wanted ‘this new school is scary, i hope i make friends!’ and not a graphic description of a squid dying

I respect batman because most parents only have to deal with the “watch this! are you watching? watch!” *does a cartwheel* for a few years but no that man has nightwing for a son and he doesn’t even ask, batmans out there discussing the latest drug ring with someone doing a handstand

I don't think it's a radical ideal for the want of Hawai'i to become their own independent country. It should have never been taken over by the US in the first place. For a country whose entire foundation is based upon "separation from a colonial country" it's laughable that they made an entire population that was self governed into a state. It's insulting. It's already blatantly obvious that this whole country was based on lies and blood, and it only continues to perpetuate that. I'm shocked that the Hawai'ian sovereignty movement isn't mainstream even though they have been fighting for it since 1997. Fuck the American government.
