Cte De Grce, quemauville, France:The Cte De Grce Owes Its Name To A Shipwreck That Could Have Cost The

Côte de Grâce, Équemauville, France: The Côte de Grâce owes its name to a shipwreck that could have cost the life of a Duke of Normandy, Robert the Magnificent. When he was caught in a terrible storm, he swore that if he survived, he would have a shrine built on the hill he could see from his boat, to thank God for helping him. Robert the Magnificent did indeed survive and kept his promise by having a chapel built on top of the hill in the early 11th century, at an altitude of 90 meters above sea level. The chapel survived the centuries until it was swept away by a landslide in the 16th century. A second chapel was then built, the Notre-Dame-de-Grâce chapel, which still exists today... La commune d’Equemauville se situe à 3 km au sud d’Honfleur. Le site, en deux parties distinctes, se trouve sur le plateau de Grâce qui domine Honfleur et l’estuaire de la Seine. Wikipedia
