TIL “Yankee Doodle” was written by the British to mock americans. “Doodle” is thought to come from the German “dödel”, meaning “fool” or “simpleton” and “macaroni,” a flamboyantly stylish type of dress, painting the Yankees as morons who thought placing a feather in one’s cap made them a “dandy.”

Page 1 of a comic featuring Goro Akechi and Akira Kurusu/Joker from Persona 5 royal. They're in Penguin Sniper, playing darts.
Panel 1: Akira prepares to throw a dart while Akechi watches. Akechi says: "I do not understand you."
Panel 2: Akira throws the dart and hits a bullseye, replying: "... Okay."
Panel 3: Akira looks back at Akechi, who's still watching him closely, then asks: "Where's this coming from?"
Page 2.
Panel 1: Some shots of a dartboard and a pool table, framing profile shots of Akechi and Akira as they talk. Akechi motions between the both of them and states: "This."
Panel 2: Akechi frowns and points towards himself, saying: "Your incessant invitations to darts and drinks with me."
Panel 3: Akira rolls his eyes, but Akechi walks on, continuing his monologue and waving his hand around for effect: "The more I think about it the less sense it makes. There can't be any advantage to be attained from it, and yet--"
Page 3. The setting has changed, and they're now in Jazz Jin, sitting across from each other and drinking bright red mocktails.
Panel 1: Akira takes a sip from his drink and responds, casually: "Not everything is a strategic choice, detective."
Panel 2: Akechi scoffs: "Hah. Nonsense."
Panel 3: He stirs his drink with a straw and then begins: "Here's the thing, Joker."
Panel 4: Leaning over a little, Akechi stares Akira down, saying: "I've long since learned not to underestimate you."
Panel 5: Close up shots of their eyes. Akechi is frowning, staring rather intensely, while Akira looks back blankly. Akechi continues: "If I know anything, is that you're not completely brainless. So tell me. Why are you doing this?"
Page 4. The scene has changed yet again, and they're now in Leblanc, still sitting across from each other, but now playing a match of chess. Akira has the black pieces, and Akechi has the white ones. There are very few pieces left on the board-- it's nearing the end of the game.
Panel 1: Akira, looking tired and a little impatient, leans his head against his hand and picks up his queen piece, saying: "Akechi... We're friends."
Panel 2: He puts Akechi in check while looking off to the side, continuing: "This is what friends do, they spend time together. I know this might be new to you, but--"
Panel 3: Akechi, seeing his move and hearing his words, widens his eyes in outrage.
Panel 4: Akechi quickly moves to pull one of his pieces, a rook, backwards across the board.
Panel 5: He stands up, looming over the board where it's shown that he's put Akira into checkmate, as Akira looks surprised. Akechi says: "Do not try to make this about me. We are talking about you."
Page 5. They're now in Mementos. Akira looks visibly injured, with several bruises peppering his face, while Akechi looks relatively unscathed.
Panel 1: Akechi swings his sword at Akira, exclaiming: "You're human, no matter how much everyone thinks of you as a fucking saint!"
Panel 2: Akira, wide-eyed, braces himself, getting the sleeve of his jacket slashed.
Panel 3: Akechi points his sword accusatorily at Akira, who's recoiling from the previous attack by sliding backwards and away from him. He continues: "There's no way you do everything you do just for the benefit of other people!"
Panel 4: Akechi, looking furious, prepares for another attack. He shouts: "There has to be an ulterior motive, something you're gaining from this!"
Page 6.
Panel 1: Akechi runs towards Akira, ready to swing again.
Panel 2: Akira holds his hands out in front of him as if to ask him to stop, as Akechi yells: "SO--"
Panel 3: Akechi jumps in the air and swings at Akira, knocking him backward. He continues: "-- WHAT--"
Panel 4: A close up shot of Akira's wide eyed expression.
Panel 5: Akira hits the floor, falling on his back.
Panel 5: Akira has fallen prone, and Akechi has pinned him down and put the tip of his sword right against his throat. He finishes: "--IS IT?!"
Page 7.
Panel 1: A shot of the background, of the chained door in Mementos they were fighting in front of. Akira's portrait is seen on the side with dialogue options next to it, resembling the game. One says "I don't understand.", another "That's a sad way to think", and the third "Should I apply for sainthood?". The second option appears to be selected.
Panel 2: The same shot of the background, now coloured entirely in deep shades of red.
Panel 3: The same shot of the background, but now fading into black. There are barely visible blood splatters against the bottom of the door.
Panel 4: The scene has changed to Akira's room, the attic above Leblanc. The shot lingers on an old CRT TV sitting atop a table, showing an old fighting game. One of the characters is on the ground on his back, his health depleted to zero, while another stands next to him, posing victorious. "PLAYER 2 WINS!" Is overlaid on top of them.
Page 8. They're in Akira's room, the attic above Leblanc, backlit by the sunset. Akira has bandages on his face in the same places as his injuries from the previous scene.
Panel 1: Akechi looks unamused, holding one of the controllers in his hand. Offscreen, Akira hesitates: "I..."
Panel 2: A shot of the games console. Akechi puts his controller down next to it. Akira says: "I guess I've always kind of felt like..."
Panel 3: The TV screen, now having dimmed to black, shows a hazy reflection of Akira on it, who carries on: "Like I have no real say over the things I want or need."
Panel 4: A shot from directly behind Akira, showing the back of his head, as he cowers a little in his chair. He continues: "Like they're always being defined by something outside of me."
Page 9.
Panel 1: Akira looks down, while Akechi continues to stare at him as he speaks: "But... caring about you..."
Panel 2: A shot of Akira's hands as he grips the controller, saying: "that feels like a choice that I made."
Panel 3: Akira finally turns to look at Akechi, smiling a little: "Being around you reminds me of that."
Panel 4: A close up of Akechi's eyes, not visibly expressing any emotion.
Panel 5: A shot from downstairs in Leblanc. Sumire, Futaba, and Haru are sitting together in a booth, Haru and Sumire are laughing at something Futaba is saying. Offscreen, Akira continues: "It makes me feel like an actual person."
Panel 6: Another shot from Leblanc. Ryuji, Yusuke, Ann and Morgana are sitting together at the counter. Yusuke and Ann are attempting to drink coffee while Ryuji and Morgana squabble with each other. Akira finishes saying: "Like I'm actually alive, like... like everyone else is."
Page 10. They're back in Penguin Sniper, still playing darts.
Panel 1: Akira rubs at the back of his neck, looking a little awkward. Hesitantly, he asks: "Does that make any sense?"
Panel 2: Akechi looks on, presumably at the dartboard, with a blank expression on his face.
Panel 3: He prepares to take the shot, and then finally answers: "... No."
Panel 4: A close up shot of the dartboard. The dart Akechi threw has just missed the bullseye, lodging itself at a place worth only 1 point. Akechi, offscreen, concludes: "Not at all."

my Roman Empire is how in Hamlet, we are presented with four characters who were each at one point the person/people Hamlet held most dear, and one of them watches as Hamlet's actions lead the other three to suffer, lose their minds, and/or die.

Horatio is Hamlet's closest friend over the course of the play, the one he comes to again and again, refers to as being in his 'heart of hearts', and who keeps him stable and alive for at least the most part. We follow these two the most explicitly throughout the text.

Ophelia is Hamlet's lover, and their relationship can be read many ways, ranging from never-really-loved-the-other to they-did-it-numerous-times-and-in-fact-she-was-pregnant-(possibly)-(also)-(aborted) but for the sake of this post I'm going to go the middle ground and say they had a wholesome and happy relationship before Hamlet's dad died and he got all sad. Doubt the stars are fire, but never doubt I love.

Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Hamlet's childhood friends, and Gertrude remembers them as being so loved by him that 'two men there are not living to whom he more adheres'. It's clear that these three were very close during some stage of his life, likely his childhood and potentially teens. The point is, they meant the most to him at some point in his life.

But again, by the time the acts of Hamlet come to pass, Hamlet has chosen Horatio to be his sole compatriot. Whether or not this is prior to his actual arrival in Elsinore is largely irrelevant- Hamlet makes sure he spends a lot of the first half of the play flustered in the face of a prince who won't stop finding nice things to say about him. Hamlet butters him up with honeyed words, and tells him the truth about everything, or what he thinks, anyway.

Horatio is touched but one specific line does stick out to him a bit- when Hamlet assured him it was not an attempt at flattery, and went on to clarify that he feels free to love Horatio as Horatio doesn't want anything from him, and doesn't have anything to hide. If what the ghost said about Claudius were true, it makes sense for Hamlet to be paranoid and hold others at a distance, but Horatio can't help but think about the underlying implication that if Hamlet had any reason to be suspicious of Horatio, he'd be just as cold to him as everyone else. Which, again, makes sense, but something about it rubs him a strange way.

Horatio tries to relate his experiences with the others he knows were close to Hamlet. He doesn't know much about Rosencrantz and Guildenstern, but Hamlet has mentioned suspicion of them, but despite that, seems to have been cordial enough. As for Ophelia... She seems to have seen the worst of his feigned madness, so he doesn't really know about her. He also heard something about an argument, but he doesn't know to what extent.

After the play, and an odd interaction with R&G, Hamlet heads upstairs to speak to his mother and Horatio thinks about it some more.

He words the question properly to himself: would Hamlet still love me if I were in their position? And he doubts for a moment, but then he remembers what Hamlet told him, the look in his eyes as he proclaimed his sincerity, and even the rare laughter he'd indulged in after the play, in only his presence, and Hamlet has convinced him.

Up until he hears the news of Polonius's murder. And until he hears the recount of Claudius, Rosencrantz and Guildenstern's intervention with the seemingly mad prince, and he begins to doubt him.

And when he's left to take care of Ophelia, driven mad by the death of her father and the wrath of her lover, and in her delirium she tells him things, tells him everything, and there's a strange sense of familiarity in her words. She shows him her letters, throwing them at him and laughing, tears running from her eyes, and Horatio recognises the poetic style, the sweet wording that always seems to know how to strike your heart closest, and he realises that she had once been where he had, received Hamlet's love in the same way. And it's strange, in a way he's not sure what to do with.

His fear is alleviated slightly when Hamlet sends him a letter, and he seems back to his usual sense of self, the one Horatio knows. Horatio is glad for the normalcy, and it does a part to clear his worry that he had been deceived in any nature, after his time with Ophelia.

Even further when he finally returns to Denmark, and while the two talk, they stumble upon Ophelia's funeral, and Hamlet takes no time to jump into her grave and proclaim his grief loudly. Horatio feels a bit sick at feeling any sort of relief at this, but the proof that Hamlet may have truly loved her and hadn't intended for this to happen does something to quell the fear again.

That is, until Hamlet recounts his journey.

And with a strange sort of expression that looks sort of like... pride, recounts how he sent Rosencrantz and Guildenstern to their deaths.

Horatio is a little shocked by this, as he can't recall the two having done anything particularly wrong, and this was clearly not accidental. Hamlet brushes him off by saying the two knew what they were getting into, showing strangely little remorse.

Horatio thinks, about how they were his childhood friends, and then again about Ophelia, and then again about his earlier question.

would Hamlet still love me if I were in their position?

And he realises, in a way that makes him nauseous, that the answer is no. And not only that, but for all Hamlet's laughter and flattering words, it wouldn't have saved him.

But still, he doesn't leave his side. Hamlet loves him now, and he's the lucky one. Nothing can be done anymore, and he feels they draw close to the end.

And he does still love him. And Hamlet loves him back.

Horatio reaches for the poisoned cup as Hamlet dies. It feels right that it should end this way, and he doesn't really want to go on.

But Hamlet wrestles the cup out of his hand with an intensity that catches him off guard, begging him to stay alive, to tell his story

and so he does, cradling the prince as he slips into a deeper dream.

Sometime after, Horatio will again think about it all. The four of them. Three dead by his hand, one alive by it.

He wonders.

Did Hamlet ever think about it too? About how his actions hurt the ones closest to him, and in his final moments, chose to break the pattern and save the only life he could?

Or did Hamlet only save him because he still loved him? Not out of guilt, or reflection on his previous actions necessarily, but because Horatio still hadn't done him wrong?

Operation "Fall of the Hooded Hawk": For situations where one half of skk has to shoot without having clear vision, and relies on the direction of their partner. In this case, Chuuya was giving Dazai coordinates of where to fire by tapping against his ear. (It's kind of like a trust fall)

I scripted a whole followup conversation with more explanation of what exactly the mirror was, and just general context, but this comic has gotten so long that I'm gonna write that as a short scene in prose, because it's mostly dialogue and if I try to draw it all then I think my hands will secede from my body lol — I'll probably be able to get that done in the next couple of days. But in the meantime, thanks for reading! :D

(3/5/24 edit: Followup convo is done!)
