Felix was young when he learned that his girlfriend was pregnant—they both were. He was studying for his last round of exams his senior year of college when she had burst into his bedroom.
“Felix, guess what,” she had grinned at him, though her eyes were still nervous as she waited for him to answer.
He looked up from his worksheets and smiled back at her, leaning back in his chair, “What?”
She didn’t say anything, just handed him a couple pregnancy tests, both of which showed two red lines—she was pregnant. He stared in confusion for a moment, trying to process exactly what she was trying to tell him. She chewed on her bottom lip nervously, waiting for him to answer, but he just looked at her, blinking slowly.
“I’m pregnant.”
“You’re… pregnant…” he looked dazed, and she worried that he was upset. “Like… you have a baby growing inside of you? Right now?”
“Yes, Lix, that’s what being pregnant means.”
“You’re pregnant!” he gasped, a smile spreading across his lips again, his eyes crinkling until they were practically closed. He wrapped his arms around her in a tight, but gentle, hug, the excitement of being a dad settling in.
When they told their parents, they were surprised and a bit hesitant, though they eventually came around. Felix’s parents were so excited they started buying clothes and toys for the baby as soon as they found out the baby was a girl. Her parents, however, were more hesitant, worried there may be complications or that Felix would turn out to be a deadbeat. None of their worries mattered to the young couple, though. Nothing could take away the excitement of having a child.
The excitement turned to dread, however, when Felix and his girlfriend went in for one of their usual checkups.
“After doing our usual observations and tests, we have to be honest that we’re a bit concerned with you carrying this baby to term…”
The doctor had expressed concerns about her body being able to handle the labor process and told them that there was a chance she might have serious, life-threatening complications if she decided to keep the baby. But after talking it over with Felix, they decided they would still try anyway. She didn’t want to think about having to get rid of the baby—not when she was already so attached to her.
The closer they got to the baby’s due date, the more worried Felix was. He was excited to meet his daughter, but he was scared he would lose the love of his life. He didn’t know if he had what it took to raise their daughter alone if anything happened. He wasn’t even sure if he could handle looking at their daughter if his girlfriend wasn’t there. Would she be a constant reminder of the love he lost?
He had to keep reminding himself to think positively. She wasn’t gone yet. There was still a chance she would survive labor. He shouldn’t overthink things. But it was difficult not to when the negatives were all her parents seemed to bring up when talking about the baby. They hated Felix. They hated that he had gotten their daughter pregnant. They continuously told Felix that if she died, it would be all his fault. It was almost more than he could stand.
The night before the actual due date, he woke up to his girlfriend shaking his shoulder. “Lix. Felix, wake up. My water broke. We need to get to the hospital.”
While she grabbed the bag they had prepared beforehand to take with them to the hospital, Felix started the car. The time spent waiting for their daughter to be born felt like the longest moments of his life, but when she was finally born and he looked at the tiny miracle in his girlfriend’s arms, he couldn’t help the joy that swelled in his heart.
And as strange as it may sound to some, Felix had decided that his new favorite sound was his daughter’s cry the moment she was born. Just knowing he was a father and his baby girl was healthy was his favorite thing. In the same moment, he decided his least favorite sound was the loud steady beep the machine hooked to the love of his life made as it flatlined. She held their daughter in her arms as her heart stopped.
The nurses quickly transferred the small child to Felix’s arms and did their best to save his girlfriend, but it was no use. Labor had been too difficult for her body, they had explained to Felix afterwards as he held his daughter in his arms, close to his chest for both her comfort and his, tears spilling down his cheeks as he tried to keep himself together.
Both his parents and hers were in the waiting room, excited to see their granddaughter for the first time, but when Felix came out of the room, tear-stained cheeks and grief-stricken eyes, they knew their worst fears had come true.
“I’m so sorry I—”
The hallway was silent except for the harsh sound of his girlfriend’s mother slapping him hard across the face, wailing loudly. “It’s all your fault she’s dead. She should have never gotten pregnant. This is all your fault!”
And he just stood there, because that’s what he’d been telling himself since he realized she wasn’t coming back. He stared blankly at the wall, fresh tears falling down his cheeks as her parents walked away, cutting him from their lives and the granddaughter they knew would remind them far too much of the daughter they’d lost. His own mother wrapped her arms around him, holding him close and letting him cry into her shoulder.
“Can we… see the baby?” his mother asked, hesitantly. She wanted to make sure the baby was healthy at least.
Felix nodded slowly, wiping his eyes and leading his parents back into the hospital room where his daughter lay sleeping soundly. When he looked at her, his heart still swelled with pride and joy, and the pain seemed to subside a little. He sniffled and then cleared his throat, stroking a finger over her soft cheeks, “We were going to name her Hoyeon—”
“Were? Sweetheart, she’s still going to need a name. Hoyeon is lovely,” his mother whispered, placing a hand on his arm, “and it suits her perfectly. She’s beautiful.”
“She is, isn’t she?”
From that moment on, Felix devoted all his time to his daughter and to providing a good life for her. He got his dream job, researched everything it took to be a first time, single parent, bought only the best of everything for his girl, and spoiled the hell out of her.
“You’re going to have fun today, yeah?” Felix asked as he knelt in front of his daughter outside her kindergarten classroom. “I’ll be back to pick you up at lunch time.”
“I’m going to have so much fun! I’ve been wanting to go to school for, like, forever, Dad! I’ll see you later, bye!”
And with that she disappeared into the classroom for her first day of school. Felix stood in the hall staring at the doorway, his heart clenching uncomfortably. Wasn’t it just yesterday that she was his tiny baby girl? With a small sigh, he turned around and left the school to go to work, reminding himself he was only separated from her for a few hours. He’d see her soon.
He stopped himself as he witnessed another parent dropping their child off, and though he knew he shouldn’t listen in, he was curious about whether or not other parents were having trouble leaving their kids.
“Okay, be good today. I’ll be back in just a few hours to pick you up. Are you excited?” you fixed your daughter, Hana’s, hair and straightened her uniform, trying not to get overly emotional. But how do you not get emotional when the little girl you’ve spent every waking hour of the past five years of your life with is growing up so fast?
“Yeah, I’m excited!” she responded cheerfully, trying to push you off of her, “Moooom, stop! I have to go inside the classroom!”
“Alright, alright,” you finally pulled away from her, watching her skip inside the classroom, turning to briefly wave at you before she walked in without looking back.
You stood and noticed Felix also standing there looking towards the classroom door. He looked young and you didn’t want to assume he was a young parent like you were, but part of you hoped he was. It would make you feel better if you weren’t the only one. “Did you drop someone off too?”
“Yeah,” he nodded, smiling softly at you, “my daughter.”
“It’s harder than I thought it would be,” you murmured, walking away from the classroom door.
“Oh, yeah. She’s my whole world. It’s hard to leave her here and go back to work.” He checked his watch and sighed, “Speaking of work, I really should get going. It was great meeting you! Maybe I’ll see you around here some time.”
He walked off before you could even ask for his name. You sighed and walked out as well. You also needed to get back to working, but thankfully, your job allowed you to work from home, so you had more time to be with Hana and didn’t have to worry about leaving her with a babysitter.
You’d had Hana when you were in your third year of college. When you’d told your, then, boyfriend, he’d decided he didn’t want to be part of raising a child and he left. After some consideration, you decided to keep the baby, and you were grateful you did. Having Hana around could be exhausting—parenting a child was exhausting—but still, at the end of the day she was pure joy. If sunshine was a person, it was your Hana. You loved her more than anyone.
When you got back to your apartment, you dropped your keys on the table by the door and slipped out of your shoes, sighing loudly and checking the clock as if it hadn’t only been ten minutes since you’d left Hana at school. How were you going to get through the rest of the morning without her?

“Mommy, mommy! Guess what!” Hana ran out of the classroom and into your arms the second the bell rang, dismissing the kindergarteners from class.
“What?” you asked, smiling widely and matching her enthusiasm as you released her from a hug and held her hand, leading her down the hall and out of the school.
“I made a new friend today!” You loved the way her eyes lit up as she told you about her new friend—something you were hoping she’d find once she started school. You, unfortunately, found it difficult to connect to young mothers in your area because many of them had a tendency to look down on you since you were a single mother and still so much younger than them. “Her name is Hoyeon! Can I go to her house sometime for a playdate?”
Though you wanted your daughter to make friends, the thought of her going over to someone’s house made you nervous since you’d never really been away from her. “Oh, maybe we can spend some time at the park or something—”
“But I want to go to her house because she said she has Polly Pocket dolls and I want to play with them!” She pouted, looking down at the sidewalk as you walked to your car and your heart broke a little. It was certainly hard to deny her when she pouted like that.
“Well, I guess it’d be alright. Just make sure you get her parents’ phone numbers and her address at school tomorrow and we’ll set something up for you, alright?”
And the way her face brightened once more made it all worth it. You helped her into her seat and made sure she was buckled properly before getting into the car yourself.

“Dad!” Hoyeon cheered as she skipped out of the classroom, “I made a friend today!”
“Oh, yeah? Who is it? Did you have fun? Did you learn anything new?” Felix picked her up, holding her on his shoulders as they walked out of the school. She giggled happily, tangling her small hands in his hair.
“Her name is Hana! She’s really nice and she wants to come over to play Polly Pockets with me! I love school, Dad. Today we talked about learning numbers 1 through 10, but I told my teacher I already know those numbers and I can do math!”
Felix laughed, taking Hoyeon off his shoulders and getting her strapped into her seat, ruffling her hair when she was settled, “That’s my girl.”
“Dad, can Hana come over sometime?” Hoyeon asked as Felix pulled out of the school parking lot.
“Sure! But I have to meet her parents first, okay? I gotta make sure they’re safe in case you ever want to go over to her house too.”
Hoyeon cheered from the back seat and Felix smiled. Anything that made his daughter happy made him happy too.

The next day, you dropped Hana off again and the sadness that gnawed at your heart as you watched her go was a little less cutting than it had been the first time. When you turned to leave, you came face to face with the man from yesterday and your breath caught in your throat. You hadn’t really looked at him that closely the day before but now that you were studying him more closely, you couldn’t deny how attractive he was.
He rubbed his eyes under his glasses and let out a small sigh. You cleared your throat before speaking, hoping to startle him a little less, “Rough night?”
“More like, rough morning. Couldn’t get her out the door today, even though she loooved school,” he laughed a little to himself. “I think she was just having a moment.”
“As they do,” you agreed, nodding along.
“So who’s your kid?” he asked, looking into the classroom through the door, which was still open as the school day hadn’t technically started yet.
You pointed out your daughter, smiling fondly, “Hana. My personal sunshine. I miss being able to carry her around with me all day already.”
“Ah, Hana? My daughter told me she made friends with her yesterday!” His eyes lit up and a smile tugged at the corners of his lips as he looked back at you, “My daughter is Hoyeon. Apparently, Hana is interested in coming over to play with Yeon’s Polly Pocket dolls.”
“Of course she is. She wants some of her own so bad, but I…” your voice trailed off as guilt bubbled in your stomach. Hana had been asking for Polly Pocket dolls since her last birthday. At the time you’d bought her gift, you hadn’t known she wanted them, so when she was disappointed with her birthday gift, you couldn’t help the ache in your heart. And you were already tight on money as a single mother, it wasn’t easy for you to just buy the extensive set she wanted.
“I get it. Being a parent is hard. Is Hana’s… is her dad in the picture? You know, helping out?”
You shook your head, embarrassment heating your cheeks. You always hated when the conversation turned to this point when talking to other parents. “Ah, no. He decided being a dad wasn’t what he wanted. But we’re… we’re doing our best. We have each other, and that’s all that matters.”
“I’m sorry to hear that,” his arm twitched, as if he wanted to reach out and place a hand on your shoulder. He didn’t touch you and you didn’t notice he’d even held himself back from it.
“But, what about you?” You turned to face him, eager to move on. “What about Hoyeon’s mother?”
His face fell and you regretted asking, but then he smiled gently at you, as if to reassure you that the question was okay to ask. “She passed away when Hoyeon was born. It’s been just the two of us since then. My parents have helped out a lot, thankfully.”
“I am so sorry. I-I shouldn’t have asked—”
“It’s okay. You didn’t know.” But you still felt guilty for asking. The sudden silence between the two of you was a little awkward, but he broke it easily, shifting his weight from one leg to another. “I kind of just realized I never got your name. I’m Felix. Lee Felix.”
“Yn. It’s nice to officially meet you, Felix.”
His smile brightened when you said his name, but the school bell rang and he quickly checked his watch, face blanching when he saw the time. “I really should go, but it was lovely to officially meet you as well. Hopefully we can find a time for the girls to play together soon.”
You waved goodbye to him as he hurried out of the school building, taking one last glance at your daughter’s classroom before leaving as well. As you made your way back to your apartment, thoughts of Felix flashed in your mind. You couldn’t deny he was attractive, and on top of that, he had been so kind. And after hearing about his girlfriend’s passing when Hoyeon was born… It made you feel sad that such a sweet and lovely person had experienced such heartbreak.
When you were back home, laptop open in front of you, notebook on the table and pencil in hand, you found it difficult to concentrate. You kept thinking about how much of a coincidence it was that Hana had made friends with the daughter of the young, single dad you’d spoken to the past two days after dropping her off. What were the odds of that? You felt relieved though—happy that Hana had made a friend her age and grateful that the parent of said friend was kind and didn’t judge you for being a young single mother.
With a sigh, you stood up and stretched, making yourself a cup of tea, hoping to quiet your incessant thoughts. You sat back down with your tea, putting in your ear buds and getting to work, remembering to set an alarm to leave on time to pick up Hana. Once you were in the groove of working, time passed quickly and before you knew it, you were back at the school, waiting for Hana.
“Yn!” a voice called from behind you, cheerfully.
You turned and saw Felix, smiling brightly at you. The look on his face made you smile too. It had been awhile since someone other than your daughter had been excited to see you. You waved a little as he walked closer, hands buried in the pockets of his pants.
The school bell rang and young kids hurried out of the classroom, eager to go home with their parents. Hana was one of the last to walk out, beside another young girl who you assumed was Felix’s daughter, Hoyeon. They were giggling at something with their arms looped together.
“Mom!” Hana exclaimed at the same time Hoyeon grinned and ran towards Felix, “Dad!”
You and Felix greeted your girls with warm hugs and smiles, asking about their day and smiling as they explained all they’d learned and the games they’d played together. Hana reached for your hand and the simple action made your heart swell. “Mom, this is Hoyeon! My new friend that I told you about! Are you friends with Hoyeon’s dad?”
“Hm, something like that,” you looked at Felix who was holding Hoyeon in his arms now. He smiled back at you. “Did you still want to go to Hoyeon’s house sometime to play?”
Hana nodded eagerly, “Yeah! I want to play Polly Pocket with her!”
Felix laughed at that and moved Hoyeon onto his shoulders so he could pull out his cell phone. You grabbed yours as well so you could exchange phone numbers. You passed your phone to him and took his in return, putting your information into it as he did the same.
“I’ll text you when we’ve got some spare time,” Felix said as he grabbed his phone back from you. “Maybe sometime this weekend? Saturday?”
“I’m sure Saturday would work for us! Just let me know once you check your schedule.”
“Yeah, for sure!” Felix was still smiling as he spoke. He walked with you out to the parking lot, a gesture you appreciated as it helped distract you from other mothers who tended to watch you with judgemental looks.
When you got to your car, Felix stayed beside you as you buckled Hana in. You weren’t really sure why, but it made you feel better to have him there, so you were grateful. “Did you want to maybe… uh, get coffee or something tomorrow morning? After we drop our girls off? I-I mean, if you’re busy with work, I understand! I just thought, it might be nice to get to know each other a little better before we set up a playdate for the girls and I figured it’d be easier if we did it at a time we don’t have to find babysitters or—”
“I would love to.” Felix interrupted your string of ramblings, his gentle smile setting you at ease once again. So you took a deep breath and smiled back, closing the car door after Hana waved a cheery goodbye to her friend. “Tomorrow works great. I don’t have any meetings in the morning, so I don’t have any conflicts.”
“Great! So, I’ll see you tomorrow then!”
He nodded and waved goodbye to you as he started to walk back to his own car, “See you tomorrow, yn.”
When you got into your car, Hana giggled at you from the backseat. You turned to look at her, curious as to what had her laughing.
“Mommy, do you like Hoyeon’s dad?”
“Of course I do, he’s a nice—”
“No, silly! Like, do you like like him?”
You felt embarrassed for some reason. You’d known this man all of two days and your daughter was already asking if you liked him. Maybe your attraction to him was a little too obvious. You decided you could blame it on the fact that you hadn’t really had a conversation longer than two minutes with a guy in five years. Let alone a man as attractive and kind as Felix.
“No, honey. I don’t like like Hoyeon’s dad. He’s just a friend.”
But maybe in the back of your mind, you wondered what it might be like if he were more than that. It was a ridiculous thought. You hadn’t known him long at all. You’d hardly even spoken to him. But you’d also been alone for so long. Sure, you had Hana. But you missed being with someone who could take care of you the way you took care of them. You missed being in love. And as silly as it seemed, you felt like if you had the time, you could find that love with Felix.

“Good morning!” Felix’s deep voice was cheerful, as always, when he greeted you, usual smile spread across his lips.
You watched as Hana and Hoyeon linked arms and skipped into their classroom together before turning and greeting Felix with a smile of your own, “Good morning. Should we get going?”
“Sure!”
The night before, the two of you had decided to go to a cafe that was within walking distance of the elementary school, that way neither of you would have to drive. The walk to the cafe was shrouded in a thick silence, neither of you wanted to start the conversation off wrong. The more you thought about what to say, the less you felt like saying anything at all. It had been so long since you’d gotten coffee with someone. So long since you’d had a conversation with someone—one that extended further than polite greetings and tight-lipped smiles.
“Order whatever you like, I’ll pay for it,” Felix pulled out his wallet as he looked up at the menu above the counter.
You were quick to pull out your own wallet, not expecting his offer to pay for you. “No, no! It’s okay! I can pay for myself. Besides, I’m the one who invited you, it’s hardly fair for you to pay for me.”
“I want to,” Felix stopped you, looking at you intently. “Please, let me.”
After a moment of intense eye contact and a battle of wills, you gave in with a deep sigh. “Fine. But if we do this again sometime, I’m paying.”
“Deal,” he grinned at you, turning to look back at the menu to figure out what he wanted to order.
After ordering, you found a table by one of the large windows at the front of the store. Felix had explained he liked to watch people through the windows—liked to make up stories about where they were going or who they were. You didn’t mind the window seat; you enjoyed the light that filtered across the cafe table and illuminated Felix’s face.
“I’m sorry if I… if this whole thing is awkward,” you laughed nervously, sipping on your drink, “It’s been a long time since I… had a real conversation with someone or, you know, went out for coffee with someone who wasn’t a family member.”
“It’s okay! It’s been a long time for me too. We’ll figure it out together. It might be awkward at first, but it’ll get easier, I’m sure.” Felix took a sip of his own drink, looking out the window for a moment as he collected his thoughts. “So, how old were you when you had Hana?”
“I was in my third year of college when I found out I was pregnant. It was close to the end of the year, so I gave birth in the middle of my final year. That was hard. But I did it with the support of my family. I’m lucky they supported me like they did. Some people aren’t so lucky. What about you? How old were you when Hoyeon was born?”
“My girlfriend found out she was pregnant when we were studying for our final exams senior year. So we were both graduated by the time Hoyeon was actually born. My family was supportive of us and very excited for Hoyeon to be born. But my girlfriend’s parents… they weren’t thrilled about it from the start. And when we found out there could be complications with the labor process, they were even more upset. They hated me. Blamed me for everything. They encouraged my girlfriend to give up on the baby. They said she could try again some day when her body was stronger. But she didn’t want to. She wanted to carry the baby to term. She was already so attached to her. We all knew the dangers, but it was ultimately her decision. She died giving birth and her family hasn’t made contact with me once since then. Not even to meet Hoyeon. She doesn’t ask about them, doesn’t care. It doesn’t matter to a five year old. But she’ll wonder someday and I don’t know what I’ll say… Ah, sorry. That was more than you asked for.”
“It’s okay,” you reached over the table and put a hand over his own before you even realized you were doing it, “I’m grateful you felt comfortable enough to share that with me. I can’t imagine how hard that must’ve been. But you’ve been so strong. Hoyeon is lucky to have you as her dad.”
Felix nodded along and if he noticed your hand on his, he didn’t mention it—didn’t move you away, “What about your ex? You said he just… didn’t want to be a dad?”
“Yeah,” you sighed and leaned back in your chair, pulling your hand away from his to cross over your other arm. “We’d been dating for two years at that point and he’d always been… so good with kids. I thought he’d be excited to have one of his own, but… he got angry instead. He was upset that I was asking him to give up on his social life to raise a child. He didn’t want to stop partying or going out with friends or staying out all hours of the night. He told me it was my fault for not taking more precautions… And for a long time, I believed him. I almost didn’t keep the baby. But I’m so glad I did. Hana is the only thing that’s kept me going the past few years.”
“It’s hard being a single parent, isn’t it?” Felix asked, leaning back in his chair as well, hands folded in his lap as he looked out the window again.
“Yeah. But it’s rewarding. And I’ve never felt as happy as I do with her. She makes all the shitty days worth it.”
“I’m sure.” Felix sat up straighter and took another sip from his drink, watching as you did the same with his usual smile tugging at his lips.
“So, um, a little off topic and random but I have a question.” Felix raised an eyebrow, encouraging you to keep going. “Do any of the… moms or dads give you weird looks when you drop Hoyeon off or pick her up? Like they’re… judging you?”
Felix laughed at that, nodding as he spoke, “They’re always going to look. They don’t understand how we’re parents at such a young age. But honestly, I ignore it. I was ready for a kid, and I love my daughter so I’m not going to let some stuck up mothers make me feel bad about it. I may be young, but I’ll always love and support my daughter. I’ll always take her to school and pick her up. I don’t care if other people think I’m too young. All that matters is that I know that I’m doing my best to be a good dad despite my age.”
You admired the way he spoke so openly about his love for Hoyeon. You admired the way he didn’t care what other people thought of him. You admired the wisdom he had even at his young age.
“Yeah, you’re right. I guess for me… it’s just hard not to care.”
Felix nodded again and though he didn’t say it, you could tell he understood. The two of you spent the rest of the morning sipping your drinks and discussing more lighthearted topics like your favorite colors, childhood memories, what you were like in high school and college, and your favorite memories of your daughters. Though it was only supposed to be a short meeting, the two of you ended up staying until it was time to pick up your daughters again.
“Sorry to keep you from work for so long. It wasn’t my intention, I promise.” You did feel a little guilty for keeping him so long. At the same time, you’d had such a great time it was hard to stay focused on that feeling.
“It’s no problem, really!” Felix walked beside you, eyes fixed ahead of him, an easy smile spread across his face. “I actually decided to take the whole day off. Thought I might take Hoyeon somewhere fun after school. It’s actually been awhile since we had a day out.”
He looked so happy, imagining the time he was about to spend with his daughter, and it warmed your heart. You could tell that Felix was a good dad—the kind of dad you had always, in the back of your mind, wished Hana could have. But life was unfair like that, and you had accepted the fact that it may not ever be in the cards for Hana to have a dad like Felix. Or for you to have a significant other like him.
“That should be fun, yeah? I think I’ll bring Hana to the park this afternoon. She doesn’t like being cooped up in our apartment.”
Felix looked at you and you wondered if his cheeks were sore from smiling so much all the time. “Do you mind if we join you for a bit? Hoyeon and Hana seem to really enjoy each other’s company and I’m sure they’d love to play together for a little longer.”
“I don’t mind!” Your heart fluttered in your chest. It felt like he was intentionally trying to spend more time with you. You had to remind yourself it wasn’t about you but about Hoyeon and Hana. Guilt made your blood run cold. How could you even be thinking about yourself when you should be thinking about Hana?
“And…” Felix’s smooth voice pulled you from your thoughts and you watched as he rubbed at the back of his neck, looking away from you shyly. “And I’d really love to spend more time with you.”
Your face felt hot and you forgot the guilt that had been running through your veins mere seconds ago. Something about him wanting to spend time with you like you wanted to with him erased the guilt that threatened to drown you. Like… if a parent as good as Felix was okay with admitting he wanted something for himself for a change, then it was okay for you to feel that way too.
“I-I mean, I know we don’t really know each other that well yet and we only just met a few days ago, but there’s something about you that’s so different and I just—”
“I get it,” you interrupt him, placing a careful hand on his shoulder. That makes him look at you. “I feel the same way.”
His eyes seemed to shine when you admitted to him that he wasn’t alone in his feelings. He breathed out deeply and the worried look on his face softened. “I just haven’t met someone in so long.”
“It’s hard to find people who don’t mind the fact that you’re a young single parent,” you agreed, trying not to shudder when his hand came to rest on your hand which was still on his shoulder.
Neither of you said anything else after that as you continued walking back to the elementary school to pick up your daughters. You waited outside the classroom for the school bell to ring, signaling the end of class for them.
“Mom!” Hana cheered as she came out of the classroom, backpack hanging off of one shoulder. You smiled as she skipped over to you. “Today we talked about allllll of the different colors and then we got to do a color by number coloring page! And today, Hoyeon and I played house at recess with Eunwoo.”
You could hear Hoyeon telling her dad a similar story about how her day went and you had to work hard to ignore them so that you wouldn’t get stuck in another bout of thinking of what could be with Felix. “That’s great, sweetheart!”
You leaned down and picked Hana up, balancing her expertly on your hip. She was getting so big, growing way too fast, but you would hold her until she started telling you to stop, because she was still your baby. Felix looked at you as he held Hoyeon in his arms, admiring the way you listened so attentively to your daughter, admiring the way you looked at her with so much love. For just a moment he allowed himself to imagine what it would be like to be with you.
Felix led you out of the school to the parking lot where you’d left your cars when you walked to the cafe. As you opened the car door to get Hana settled in, Felix stopped you, leaning past you to grab the booster seat. “We can take my car. I’ll bring you back to yours afterwards.”
“A-are you sure? I don’t want to put you out of your way.” You watched, slightly shocked, as Felix situated the seat in the backseat of his own car before walking around to get Hoyeon buckled in her seat.
“I’m sure.”
He smiled at you so you nodded and buckled Hana in. You walked around his car to get in on the passenger side. Once the four of you were settled, Felix started to drive. You couldn’t shake the thought that you sort of looked like… a normal family.
“Mommy,” your daughter whined from the backseat, “I’m hungry!”
You turned in your seat to look at her, reaching back to hold her hand and comfort her, “I know, sweetheart. Maybe we can get you a treat when we get to the park, okay? Can you wait for just a bit?”
She nodded, bottom lip stuck out in a pout. You offered her a small smile, before sitting in your seat normally again. Music played softly over the radio—some sort of R&B station that made you feel like you were in a movie, or in a dream. You looked over at Felix, admiring him as he drove. He hummed along to the song on the radio, fingers tapping against the steering wheel as he waited at a red light. His eyes were fixed ahead. He was careful. And you appreciated him and the safety he offered without even knowing it.
His right arm moved to rest on the middle console and you had to hold yourself back from reaching out and resting your arm on his. You felt ridiculous for being so infatuated with him. You had to think of your daughter. How could you be selfish and think of yourself and what you wanted?
The car ride was quick and before you knew it, you were at the park. Felix was quick to get out and he opened your door before continuing on to help Hoyeon out of the car. Once you got Hana out of her seat, she ran to catch up to Hoyeon. You watched as Hoyeon and Hana raced to the playground, walking beside Felix.
Felix noticed the food vendors lining the street before you did. He pointed them out to you, “Hana said she was hungry, yeah? Why don’t you watch the girls while I get us all something to eat.”
“Oh, y-you don’t have to—”
“I want to.”
It was the same thing he’d said before he’d convinced you to let him buy your coffee that morning. “You said I could pay the next time.”
“It’s the same day, so it doesn’t count.” He grinned at you, pulling his wallet out once more.
“You make it sound like you want to see me again after today.”
It was a joke, but secretly, deep in your heart, you hoped he would say that he did want to see you again.
“That’s because I do. Now, go watch the girls. I’ll be back shortly.”
You blinked, mouth falling open as you watched Felix walk away. Once you came to your senses, you were quick to turn around and hurry toward the playground to watch your daughter and her newfound friend.
“Mommy! Look what I can do!” Hana yelled from the top of the playground before catapulting herself down the slide and doing a somersault at the bottom. It made your heart catch in your throat, but she stood up grinning so widely your worries melted just a little bit.
You clapped enthusiastically, watching as Hoyeon tumbled down the slide after her. “Good job, baby!”
The girls chased each other around the playground, squealing with excitement and your smile came easily. You’d never really thought about having more kids—you had your hands full with Hana, especially since you were a single mother—but watching how Hana played with Hoyeon made you think about how Hana would be a great sister.
Felix returned after only a few minutes—the line thankfully hadn’t been very long. You called Hoyeon and Hana over, helping both girls to sanitize their hands before giving them their food. The girls giggled together as they ate and you and Felix laughed as your daughters made silly faces and told jokes that made no sense.
After lunch, you and Felix cleaned the girls up and let them play again while you watched from a park bench. You sat so close to him your shoulders touched. Felix sighed contentedly, leaning into you so slightly you almost didn’t notice it. “I’m so glad our girls met. It makes me so happy that Hoyeon finally has a friend her age.”
“Yeah,” you nodded in agreement, joy swelling in your heart as you watched Hana laughing and playing. It had been just the two of you for so long and as much as you adored her, you were glad she now had a friend who was the same age as her. “It’s just been us for so long, it’s so good to see her with another little girl.”
“It’s nice for… us too.” Felix looked over at you and you felt your heart skip a beat. Was he implying what you thought he was? Or were you overthinking it?
“Mmm, how so?”
You tried to sound flirty but not desperate, just in case you were wrong. But your worrying was unnecessary because he just smirked and replied in a tone equally flirty. “You’re the first person I’ve met who really understands what it’s like to be a young, single parent. You understand that Hoyeon is my priority. But you also know what it’s like to be so fucking lonely. Been so long since I’ve been with someone—let alone someone as stunning as you.”
He had leaned in, whispering in your ear by the time he was finished. Your body felt tingly and you shivered as he breathed out deeply, air blowing across your neck. You swallowed the lump in your throat, subconsciously squeezing your legs together. “I…”
“Of course,” he cut you off, sitting up properly again and watching as the girls played tag with a little boy who had joined them on the playground. “We should get to know each other better before we take things any further.”
You found yourself nodding, still struggling to fully process what he was saying. “Yeah.”
“I’m free Saturday, by the way. For the girls’ playdate. I’ll send you my address. You can come over around lunch time, if you want.” Felix kept talking as if he hadn’t just whispered in your ear that he hadn’t been with a woman as beautiful as you in a long time.
“Right,” you shook your head, clearing the fog of arousal that clouded your thoughts. “Right, yeah that works great. Just send me your address and we’ll be there.”
After the girls had played for an hour or two, you decided it was time to go so that Felix and Hoyeon could enjoy the rest of their day together. Felix drove you back to your car and helped you put Hana’s booster seat back in your car. Once she was buckled, you closed the door and turned to Felix. “Thank you for hanging out with us today. And for coffee. It was… really nice.”
“I enjoyed it. Thank you for letting us tag along. I’ll see you tomorrow?” Felix flashed you a charming smile and reached his arms out after you nodded in affirmation, “Sorry, I’m a hugger.”
Before he could move away, you wrapped your arms around him. You sighed softly when he hugged you back. You hadn’t realized how touch starved you’d been. Of course you gave your daughter hugs and she cuddled with you almost every day, but it was so different to be held by an adult—especially one you were attracted to.
“See you tomorrow,” you said softly, finally pulling yourself away. You frowned a little at the emptiness you felt when you were no longer wrapped up in his arms, but you shook it off and smiled at him, waving as you walked around to get into your car.
“Mom,” Hana squealed from the backseat as you started driving away. “You do like like Hoyeon’s dad! I saw you hug him!”
You hummed, deciding if there was anyone you could be honest with, it was Hana. “Maybe I do like him… a little bit. Don’t tell anyone though, okay? It’s just for you and me to know.”
She nodded enthusiastically in the backseat before cheering for you to turn up the radio so she could sing the song that was on—one of her favorites. You turned the song up and continued to drive, willing away thoughts of Felix.

“Hey Dad?” Hoyeon asked as he helped her out of the car when they got to the arcade.
“Yeah, love?”
“Do you have a crush on Hana’s mom?”
The question caught Felix off guard and he paused for a moment, unsure of what to say. He locked the car and led her into the arcade before he answered. “Hm, maybe a tiny one, why?”
“I like Hana. I want her to be my sister,” Hoyeon grinned at her dad before running to the game she wanted to try first. “Plus her mom is nice. And I want you to be happy. I think you deserve that more than anyone. And aren’t people happy when they have crushes on each other?”
Felix felt his heart squeeze painfully in his chest. “Sometimes people are happy when they have crushes on each other. But… sometimes it doesn’t work out.”
“How do you know if it won’t work out if you don’t try?”
Felix was stunned by the wisdom coming from his five-year-old. He couldn’t deny that she had a very valid point. He would never know if things would work out or not unless he tried. At the same time, it scared him to try. He didn’t want to end up heartbroken, didn’t want Hoyeon to get hurt, and he was still terrified that maybe things would end up like they had the last time he’d been in a relationship. With Hoyeon’s mom.
“Dad, will you lift me up so I can play the basketball game?” Hoyeon tugged on the leg of his pants, effectively pulling him out of his thoughts.
He nodded and reached down to pick her up and put her on his shoulders, “Up we go!” He handed her basketball after basketball, watching as she threw them towards the hoop and cheering every time she scored a point. They played a few more games before leaving the arcade to get ice cream and, eventually, returning home.
Once they were home, Felix made dinner for the two of them. After that, they watched a Disney movie before it was time for Hoyeon’s bath and then Felix read her a story to help her fall asleep. He used to read her the cute children’s books before bed, but lately she’d been getting bored, so he’d been reading her a little bit of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone before bed each night. When her eyes started to close and her breathing evened out, Felix closed the book and leaned in to press a kiss to her forehead.
When she was first born, Felix hadn’t left her side once. He used to fall asleep in a rocking chair beside her crib so that he would be right there if she woke up in the night, which she always did for the first few months. Even now, sometimes Felix didn’t want to leave her alone at night. What if she needed him? He had to remind himself he was just across the hall if anything happened.
He finally turned the lamp off in Hoyeon’s room and left, leaving the door cracked open before he slipped into his own room. He left his door cracked too so she could come right in if she needed anything or had a nightmare. He turned the shower on, ready to finally relax and unwind after the day. It had been a good day—one of the best he’d had in a long time—but it had been a long day.
Once he was under the warm water, he let his mind wander. His body was so tense, his muscles ached, and he was hard. He sighed, reaching to turn the water to cold, but then he stopped. It had been months since he’d touched himself. It was hard to get off with a kid around constantly. He always worried at night that she would hear him and wake up. Or that she’d wake up for some other reason and come into his room. The thought of being caught by his five-year-old daughter terrified him.
But the sound of the shower would mask his noises as long as he didn’t go crazy. The more he thought about it, the more tempting it was. Felix had always had a high sex drive—it didn’t take much to make him horny and he craved intimacy all the time. But since Hoyeon had been born, he’d pushed his own needs to the side. He hadn’t had sex in over five years, which felt like a lifetime to him since he’d been having sex frequently until his girlfriend had gotten pregnant.
After hesitating for a moment longer, his fingers wrapped around his hardened dick. He gasped at the contact. It felt so much better than he remembered. The last time he’d touched himself had been when his parents had Hoyeon over for the weekend to spend some time with her and give Felix a bit of a break. Which had been at least five months ago. Since then, whenever he got hard (which was a lot) he took a cold shower, denying himself the release he so desperately needed.
“Fuck,” he groaned softly, leaning his head back against the wall of the shower as he tugged on his cock. He already felt so close to cumming. He moved his hand slowly, just enough to offer some relief, but not enough to make him finish just yet. He didn’t want it to be over too quickly. He wanted to take time to enjoy it.
When he started feeling a little more desperate, he allowed himself to go faster, chasing that euphoric high he’d been craving everyday since the last time he’d felt it. He bit his bottom lip, trying to stifle the moans that threatened to escape, “Hah, f-fuck.”
He didn’t remember it feeling this good. He was so close. And just before he peaked, his mind conjured an image for him—you. Not even anything dirty, he was just thinking of you. Sitting next to him on the park bench, smiling at your daughter as she played, shoulder brushing against his.
He groaned, cumming harder than he thought he ever had. He worked himself through his orgasm, breathing deeply as the water washed all traces of his release off of him. He stared at the ceiling as water cascaded down his back, guilt forming in the pit of his stomach. He’d known you all of three days and he’d just orgasmed with your face in mind.
The worst part, he thought, was not that he felt guilty for cumming to the thought of you, but that he didn’t really feel guilty at all. He felt bad that he didn’t feel bad. He finished showering quickly and when he finally laid down in his bed, his mind wandered back to the memory of you sitting beside him at the park.
In the darkness of his room, in the silence and privacy, he allowed himself to imagine. He imagined getting to know you better. He imagined having you and your daughter over for dinner where he’d cook something all four of you would like. He imagined having a drink with you after dinner while the girls played in Hoyeon’s room. The two of you would just talk and it would be perfect. He imagined watching a movie with you and with Hoyeon and Hana, the two girls sitting together on one end of the couch while you sat wrapped in his arms.
He fell asleep to those thoughts. He fell asleep dreaming of the perfect family… with you, a woman he’d met three days ago when he dropped his daughter off for her first day of kindergarten. He was getting ahead of himself, moving too fast, but he’d been doing things alone for so long—the thought of getting to do life with another person was addicting to him.
The same way it was addicting to you.
One week turned to two, two turned to four. One month turned to two turned to three and you found yourself spending time with Felix as often as possible. The girls were such good friends, they’d never really been friends with anyone their age before. And you enjoyed Felix’s company. Maybe a little too much.
You’d fallen into a routine with him. Every Monday night, Felix and Hoyeon came to your apartment for dinner and every Wednesday night, you and Hana went to his apartment for dinner and the girls would play for a few hours afterwards before it was time for you to leave and put Hana to bed. You and Felix would talk or watch a movie while the girls played in Hoyeon’s room. And on Saturday afternoons, Felix and Hoyeon would meet you at the park you’d taken the girls to after school all those months ago.
It was a routine you were comfortable with. You were able to finally socialize with another person who wasn’t your daughter or a coworker, and your daughter was able to hang out with her first friend who wasn’t a family member. And it never felt like too much. In fact, you wished you saw him more. But you already saw him three out of seven days a week, not even including the snippets of time you saw him when you were dropping off and picking up your daughters. It felt ridiculous to want someone so badly.
It was hard not to want him, though, especially as you got to know him more.
You’d discovered that he came from a well-off family and worked as the Chief Operations Officer for his father’s company and had majored in Business in university. You’d also found out that his secret passion and hobby was music. He loved to write lyrics and little melodies, sometimes even putting together entire songs and saving them as drafts on his computer. You’d learned that he had two sisters, an older sister and a younger sister. You’d learned about his childhood and found out that he’d grown up in Australia, but had moved to South Korea for university and to help his father run the branch of the company located there.
And you’d told him so much about yourself as well. Where you were from, how you’d ended up there, what you studied in university, your current job, what you were like as a kid and a teenager and a college student. The more you got to know him and the more you opened up to him, the harder you fell and the worse you felt about it.
“What’s on your mind, pretty girl?” Felix asked as you stared off into space instead of watching the movie in front of you. It was Saturday, and though you didn’t usually spend the whole day with Felix and Hoyeon, today Hana had been having such a good time you all decided to spend the rest of the day and evening at Felix’s apartment. He moved a strand of hair away from your face, turning you to look at him.
You could feel your face getting warm and you prayed he wouldn’t notice how flustered the nickname made you. You shook your head. “It’s nothing…”
“Come on now,” he sat up, pulling you with him. You found it hard to focus when you were straddling his lap the way you were, but you tried your best to pay attention to what he was saying. “You can tell me. Tell me what’s going through your head. Tell me what’s got you so distracted.”
You swallowed thickly before sighing and leaning in to rest your forehead against his shoulder. His arms were wrapped around your waist, holding you close to him. I’m definitely in too deep. You couldn’t stop the thought from flashing in your mind.
“I really, really like you,” you finally whispered, unsure where your sudden bravery had come from.
He rubbed your back soothingly, making you look up at him so he could press a gentle kiss to your forehead. “I really, really like you too.”
His words didn’t make you feel better like you had thought they would. The guilt that settled in the pit of your stomach didn’t fade. You couldn’t stop the tears that pooled in your eyes and you let your head fall onto his shoulder again.
“Hey,” he murmured, moving to rub up and down your sides over your t-shirt. “Hey, what’s wrong, love?”
“I just… I feel guilty.” You felt silly when the words tumbled out of your mouth. They sounded stupid even to your own ears.
“Why? What do you feel guilty about?”
You swallowed, trying to talk around the lump in your throat as tears finally spilled over your cheeks. “Sh-shouldn’t I be thinking about Hana and what she wants and needs? I feel guilty for thinking of myself. Hana is my whole world and I feel like I’m being selfish every time I think about something I want.”
“Look at me,” he whispered. When you didn’t answer or move, he grabbed your face gently and lifted it to look at him once more. “Look at me. I understand why you feel guilty, really I do. Because I used to feel that way all the time. Everyday. Until my mom told me something that’s helped me. You’re just as much a person as your daughter is. You have needs that need to be met in order for you to continue living. We call it life because we’re meant to live, not just survive. You’re not a bad person or a bad mother for indulging in yourself every once in a while.
“It’s okay to think about yourself sometimes. It’s okay to want something or to want someone. It’s okay to need things. Never feel like you have to ignore your own needs and desires just because you have someone else to think of and care for. Hana would want you to be happy, right? So it’s okay to do things that make you happy. Taking time for yourself and doing and having the things you want and need will, ultimately, make you a better mom. You’ll be less burnt out and able to devote yourself to your daughter the way you really want to.”
His words made you cry harder, but not because you didn’t agree with him. You cried harder because no one had ever really told you that it was okay to put yourself first sometimes. As much as you loved and cared for your daughter, you knew that you couldn’t be the mom she needed and deserved if you were unhappy or if you felt your needs weren’t being met.
“I think that maybe…” you finally choked out, holding Felix’s face in your hands the same way he held yours. “Maybe I love you.”
Felix smiled at you, tears pooling in his own eyes as he leaned his forehead against yours. “I think that maybe I love you too.”
“I-I usually take Hana to see my parents on Sundays. She likes to spend the day with them. M-maybe I could come over tomorrow if… that’s okay?” Your voice shook as you spoke. You weren’t sure why you were nervous about what his answer would be. It was just Felix. But that was it. It was Felix.
He pressed a chaste kiss to your cheek, “I can have my parents watch Hoyeon for the day. I’d love to spend the day together, just the two of us.”
You nodded and he wiped the tears from your eyes with his thumbs. You opened your mouth to say something, but before you could speak, Hana and Hoyeon came marching out into the living room, dressed in some of Hoyeon’s dresses. They had been playing dress up and had decided to put on a (free) fashion show for you and Felix.
You smiled at them, hoping they wouldn’t notice how red your eyes were. You turned around in Felix’s lap and he cleared his throat slightly, breathing out shakily as you adjusted yourself on top of him. His arms were still around you, though if the girls noticed it, they didn’t mention it, too excited to practice their “runway walk” for the two of you.
Felix cheered the girls on, clapping as they strutted up and down the length of the living room before ending in front of you, bowing as you continued to cheer for them. You felt Felix rest his chin on your shoulder as he spoke, “You girls are so so beautiful, inside and out. Remember that beauty isn’t only skin deep, yeah?”
Hoyeon nodded, having heard this exact spiel many times before from her father, and Hana nodded along shyly. She was always shy when Felix complimented her. He was the first man to really do so; it was something she was still getting used to, even after three months worth of compliments from him.
Hana yawned and you knew that was your cue to gather your things so you could take her home. You stood, stretching once you were off Felix’s lap. He watched you, eyes warm and full of an emotion you couldn’t quite read. “Are you ready to go, Hana love?”
“Yeah,” she nodded tiredly, following Hoyeon back to her bedroom so she could put her own clothes on.
When the girls had disappeared once more, Felix stood, wrapping his arms around your waist and pulling you into a warm hug. He buried his face in your neck as he held you close. “I’m so glad I met you.”
The comment made your heart swell more than any other phrase ever could. You were glad that you’d met him and knowing he felt the same made you feel infinitely happy.
“Me too.”
You heard Hana coming again and pulled away from Felix reluctantly to grab your bag and help her put her shoes on. Hoyeon followed after Hana and Felix scooped her up off the floor holding her as you and Hana got ready to leave.
“Can you tell Hana bye and thanks for coming?” Felix asked, smiling at his daughter who leaned her head on his shoulder.
“Bye Hana,” she said softly. “Thanks for coming to play today.”
“Bye Hoyeon,” Hana replied, walking towards Felix and Hoyeon once her shoes were on. She hugged one of Felix’s legs, since his arms were full. “Thanks for letting me come over today with my mom, Mr. Felix.”
Felix grinned at Hana and crouched down so he and Hoyeon could hug Hana properly. It made you feel warm inside to see the three of them together like that. You waved goodbye to Hoyeon and Felix before holding Hana’s hand and taking her home.
The next day couldn’t come fast enough. After you put Hana to bed, you stayed up staring at the ceiling, wishing you could just fall asleep so the night would pass faster. After almost an hour of tossing and turning and staring into thin air, you reached for your phone, chewing on your bottom lip as you debated whether or not to text Felix.
It turned out, though, that you didn’t have to. As if he’d read your mind, he texted you.

You smiled a little as you typed out a response.

You sat up immediately, switching on the lamp by your bed and fixing your shirt on your shoulders as well as making sure your hair looked okay. You took a deep breath and opened his contact, pushing the video call button as you bit your bottom lip, anxious for him to answer. It only rang twice before he answered.
He was sitting in his bed, leaning against the headboard. His lamp was on too, illuminating his face enough for you to make out the freckles scattered across his cheeks. The anxiety that rose in your stomach eased when you saw his face and you smiled at him.
You stayed up on the phone with him for a few more hours until you, inevitably, dozed off. He watched you for a few minutes as you laid there until he was certain you were asleep and then he hung up, a soft, “I love you” slipping past his lips.
You didn’t remember falling asleep, all you knew was that you had been talking to Felix and then when you opened your eyes again it was morning and Hana was running into your room, excitedly telling you all the things she wanted to do when she went to visit your parents later that day.
You made breakfast, helped Hana get ready, got yourself ready, and played with Hana’s toys while you waited for your parents to come and pick her up. After they did, you texted Felix that you were free the rest of the day, explaining that your parents wouldn’t be bringing Hana back until bedtime. He told you that Hoyeon was with his parents already too and that you could come over whenever you were ready. So you left immediately.
When you knocked on Felix’s apartment door, he answered after a minute, smiling gently at you as you walked in. This was the first time you’d been over to his apartment without Hana or Hoyeon there. You stepped out of your shoes and followed him to the kitchen.
“Do you want anything? Coffee?”
You shake your head, “I already ate with Hana. I’m okay.”
He brought you to his bedroom. You’d never been there before, but the second you stepped in, your eyes widened in awe. One wall of his bedroom had large floor to ceiling windows, looking out over the city. You found yourself standing in front of them, looking down at the bustling world below. Felix watched you with a fond smile tugging at the corners of his lips.
“The view is so… lovely.” You turned to look at him. He was leaning in the doorway of the bedroom, still watching you.
“This room is… kind of why I chose this apartment. That and the fact that it’s safe and not far from the elementary school I’d always wanted Hoyeon to go to.” He laid down on the bed, staring up at the ceiling, arms and legs spread out like a starfish. “Come lay with me? I want to sleep a little more. Five-year-olds are exhausting.”
You laughed and agreed, walking towards him and curling up next to him on the bed. His arms instinctively wrapped around you, holding you close to him as he breathed deeply, eyes closing contentedly.
The two of you fell asleep easily and you didn’t wake up for another couple of hours. When you checked the clock, it was noon. you sat up slowly, trying not to wake Felix up. You snuck away to the bathroom attached to his room and locked the door behind you. You watched yourself in the mirror, taking a breath before giving yourself a small, whispered pep talk.
“You’ll be just fine. It’s just Felix.”
After you used the toilet and freshened up a bit, you left the bathroom, laying down next to Felix on the bed again. He groaned low in his throat, eyes not opening as he spoke, “What time is it?”
“It’s around noon,” you murmured, closing your eyes again as his arms wrapped around you again. “We slept for a couple hours.”
He hummed in understanding but didn’t move to get up. He shifted a little and suddenly your leg was in between his. That was when you noticed.
“Felix,” you whispered.
He didn’t say anything, didn’t make a sound. “Felix, you’re hard.”
That seemed to wake him up. His eyes flew open and he sat straight up in the bed, looking down at his crotch and confirming that he was, in fact, hard. He groaned, face flushing in embarrassment. He moved to stand, looking sheepish.
“I-I’m going to go take a shower. I’ll be back in a few.”
“Wait,” you reached out for him, fingers wrapping around his wrist. “Let me help you.”
“No, yn, I can’t ask you to do that—”
“Then it’s a good thing you’re not asking. I’m offering. Let me?”
He looked at you intently, and it looked like he was debating with himself inside his head. You slowly pulled him back towards the bed. He didn’t resist, eyes fixed on you all the while. He felt like he was dreaming—like there was no way it could be real that you were on his bed, telling him you wanted to help him get off.
You finally got him back in the bed with you and he settled himself against the pillows, breaking shakily as you tugged his sweatpants off, leaving him only in his t-shirt and boxers. He grabbed your face gently, making you look at him. “I… Can I kiss you first?”
He had barely finished asking before you pressed your lips to his, desperate to know what he tasted like, to know what his lips would feel like against yours. He kissed you back, hands moving to hold your waist so he could pull you closer. It was perfect—it was everything you’d ever hoped and imagined it would be. All you wanted was to be as close to him as possible—which was how you found yourself in his lap, fingers threaded in the hair at the nape of his neck as you slid your tongue into his mouth, hips grinding into his subconsciously.
He was so horny he felt like he might cry. He pushed you off a little, gasping for air. “Sorry, I just can’t… I’m so…”
Though he stumbled over his words, you seemed to know what he meant. You slid off his lap, lying on your stomach and settling yourself in between his legs. You laid your head on his thigh, looking up at him while your fingers toyed with the elastic band of his boxers. He whimpered as he watched you.
“Please,” he whispered, finally, fingers tangling in your hair as he pulled you closer to his clothed dick. “Please, I need you so bad.”
You decided not to tease him after that. If he was like you, he probably hadn’t gotten himself off properly in months, maybe even years. You pulled his boxers off, tossing them aside. Your eyes focused on his dick, lying hard and heavy against his stomach. It had been years since you’d been with a man, years since you’d seen an actual dick. Were they all as pretty as Felix’s? After a moment of thought, you decided that they weren’t, he was the exception.
He shuddered as you reached out, ghosting your fingertips over his length. You were sure you’d never seen such a perfect dick in your life—he was long, but not too long, thick, but not too thick, and you admired the veins that ran up and down his length. And, of course, the sounds he made any time you even came close to touching him… Everything about him was perfect.
“You’re so pretty, Lix,” you whispered, wrapping your fingers around him firmly. “So perfect.”
He didn’t say anything, just whined, and you knew he was desperate for you to do something. You brought the tip of his dick to your lips, leaving tiny kitten licks against the slit. He threw his head back, skull thudding lightly against the headboard.
“Fuck, you look so pretty with my dick in your hands. Bet you’ll look even better choking on it,” he groaned, hands still in your hair as he stared at you from behind lust-filled eyes.
It was like a switch had flipped. One moment he was a whiny, whimpering mess and the next he was taking charge, forcing you to take more of his cock down your throat. You gagged a little when the tip hit the back of your throat, but didn’t pull away. You looked up at him as your eyes started to water, one hand bracing yourself against his thigh as the other hand moved to play with his balls.
You swallowed around him and he moaned loudly, “Shit, do that again.”
So you swallowed again. And again. And again until his hips started thrusting shallowly. He was trying to hold back—he didn’t want to hurt you—but it felt so good. Tears pooled in your eyes from how full your mouth felt. You were sure your throat would be sore later, but you didn’t really care.
“F-fuck, I’m cumming,” he tried to pull out, unsure if you wanted him to finish down your throat, but you held him in place as he twitched and came.
He pulled out, breathing heavily as he leaned against the headboard. You swallowed and then opened your mouth to show him, hoping he’d be pleased. He grinned as he looked at you, “Such a good girl, yeah?”
You nodded and then crawled over to lay beside him. His arms wrapped around you easily, like there had never been a day when you hadn’t been wrapped up in his warmth. After a long moment of silence, you looked up at him, admiring him. He had his eyes closed, head still back against the headboard. His skin glistened with drying sweat.
“Was I your first blowjob since…” You didn’t finish the sentence, words catching in your throat. You hoped it wouldn’t upset him. Maybe you shouldn’t have asked.
“Yeah,” he nodded from beside you, not opening his eyes. “Yeah. I haven’t had a blowjob since my girlfriend died and Hoyeon was born.”
You were quiet again, unsure of whether or not you should say something else. But eventually, your curiosity won out. “Was I… good?”
“So good,” he chuckled lowly and you felt your heart swell a little with pride.
“I haven’t… done it in a long time so I guess I was a little worried.”
Felix finally opened his eyes, looking over at you with a lazy smile. “You were perfect. I haven’t orgasmed that hard since I…”
His voice trailed off, but you weren’t content with his answer, so you poked him in the side, teasingly, “Since you, what?”
“Since I…” His cheeks were bright and he looked away from you, clearing his throat, “came to the thought of you a couple months ago.”
That made you sit up straight, completely surprised. “You did what?”
“N-not the way you think!” He looked terrified, sitting up straight next to you and panicking as he tried to explain.
“What other way is there?”
“I-I was just… in the shower and I hadn’t jerked off in forever and so I started and when I was close to finishing I-I just thought of when you were sitting by me on the park bench that first week we met and I came so fucking hard and I—”
You kissed him. You hadn’t been upset with him to begin with. You thought it was hot. You hadn’t been wanted by someone in a really long time. Knowing that you’d had that effect on him made you happy. You felt good knowing he’d wanted you and still wanted you as badly as you’d always wanted him. He kissed you back for a few minutes before pushing you off, confusion clear on his face.
“Wait, y-you’re not mad?”
“Mad?” You asked, eyes wide, “Why would I be mad?”
“I just told you that I jerked off thinking about you. When we had just barely met. That doesn’t make you angry?”
“Would you be mad if I told you that I’ve thought of you every time I’ve touched myself since we met?”
Felix looked like he was about to combust, his eyes about to pop out of his skull. “W-well no but—”
“Then why would it be different for me? I already told you how I feel about you.” He didn’t answer right away; he still couldn’t meet your eyes. You held his face in your hands, gently, trying to make eye contact with him. “Hey, I think it’s so hot that you did that. It’s been a really long time since someone has… wanted me that way. And I’ve wanted you since we met. Knowing you’ve wanted me since then too makes me so, so happy. And horny. But let’s focus on ‘happy’ right now.”
His head snapped up to look at you finally when you mentioned that he made you horny. You smirked a little. Of course that would be what got his attention. He swallowed and looked at you from wide, worried eyes. “You promise you’re not mad?”
“I just told you I’m no—”
He leaned in and kissed you again and you melted into him. It was easy to get addicted to the way he kissed you. It was easy to get addicted to him. His hands played with the hem of your t-shirt and you could tell he wanted to take it off. You pulled away and took your t-shirt off, grinning when his eyes instantly traveled down to your boobs.
“Can I touch you?” His voice was soft when he asked, filled with admiration as he stared at your body. You nodded and he leaned in to press open-mouthed kisses to your neck as his hands moved from your waist, up your back, over your shoulders, and finally stopped on your chest. His hands played with the straps of your bra. “Can I take this off?”
“Please,” you gasped, pressing closer to him as his fingers moved to unclasp your bra. “B-but you have to take your shirt off too.”
He pulled his shirt over his head before reaching for the clasp on your bra once more. He got it off quickly and as soon as your chest was bare and exposed to him, he bent to take one of your nipples into his mouth, sucking gently and flicking at it with his tongue while his hand played with the other one. Your hands tangled in his hair once more, holding him as close to you as you could.
“Wanna taste you,” he mumbled, switching sides and taking your other nipple into his mouth. “Please?”
You nodded quickly, unable to find your voice. He kissed you deeply, sliding his tongue along your bottom lip before slipping it inside your mouth. He could still taste his release on your tongue and it sent a shiver down his spine. He pulled away, leaving you gasping for air as he left hot, open-mouthed kisses on your neck and collarbones. HIs kisses trailed down your sternum and across your stomach. When he reached the waistband of your pants, he was quick to pull them down your legs, along with your underwear. He kissed your thighs, drawing closer to where you needed him, but not close enough.
“Felix, please,” you moaned, on the brink of frustrated tears.
He pressed a brief kiss to your clit before lapping at it gently with his tongue. You bit back a scream as he continued like that, finding a pace that had you wiggling underneath him. After a few minutes, he brought a thumb to your entrance, massaging around it before pushing inside you slowly, all the while alternating between sucking your clit and licking it gently.
“How do you feel, darling, hm? Tell me how you feel.”
Felix’s voice was deeper than usual, thick with lust as he pulled away for a second, thumb still playing with your entrance, pushing in and out steadily. You looked down at him, vision fuzzy and brain hazy from how good you felt. “Feel so good. You’re so good. So perfect. Just… the best.”
With a smirk, he was buried between your thighs again. He pulled his thumb out completely as he ate you out, holding one of your thighs while he thumbed at your clit instead. You were on cloud nine. It was so overwhelming, but you couldn’t deny how good it felt.
“Lix, I-I’m so close!” You gasped out, holding his face against you, not stopping to wonder if he could breathe or not. Felix didn’t stop until you were cumming on his tongue—didn’t stop until you were pushing his face away because of the overstimulation.
Felix stayed between your legs, resting his head on your leg and looking up at you in awe as you caught your breath. You were the most beautiful person he’d ever met and the most wonderful. Part of him felt guilty for even thinking that because that’s how he’d always felt about his girlfriend. About Hoyeon’s mother. But he pushed the guilt away, knowing that she’d want him to be happy. It had been five years and he finally felt like it was okay for him to move on.
“Hoyeon told me something back when we first met you and Hana,” Felix said softly, tracing shapes and letters into your skin.
“Mmm, yeah? What’d she tell you?”
You heard him sigh contentedly as you combed your fingers through his hair. “She said that… she wanted Hana to be her sister and that she thought you were nice. And that I deserved to be happy. I told her sometimes things don’t work out that way, but she asked me how I knew it wouldn’t work out if I wasn’t even going to try.”
“She’s a smart little girl,” you smiled fondly, thinking of Felix’s daughter. It warmed your heart that she felt close enough to Hana to want to be her sister, even back then.
“She is,” Felix nodded against your leg and then he looked up at you. “You make me… so happy. In a way that only you can. I love my daughter, and she’s the joy of my life, but I haven’t felt happy like this since my girlfriend died. It’s a different kind of happiness. Different from the joy Hoyeon brings. And I… I don’t want to regret not trying.”
You didn’t even realize you were crying until Felix sat up and wiped the tears from your cheeks. Even though you were crying, you were still smiling at him. “You make me happy too. I didn’t think I would find someone after… after Hana was born, really. But now you’re here and I want you and you want me and I don’t care how scary it is, I want to try with you. I want to try everything. I think I can be brave enough, as long as it’s you.”
Felix kissed you, tongue sliding against yours once more. You didn’t think you could ever get enough of him and his kisses. Everything about him was addicting and so satisfying. He was everything you’d wanted and dreamed about for the past five years. In fact, he was everything you’d wanted ever.
You could feel Felix’s dick hardening against your thigh, and the thought of finally having him inside of you was overwhelming. “Felix, I want you.”
He seemed to know exactly what you meant, even though he hadn’t actually asked you. His fingers traveled back in between your legs and he pushed two fingers inside of you, scissoring you open so that it would sting less when he gave you his cock.
He hadn’t had sex in five years and he was, admittedly, a little nervous that he’d lost his touch. It did comfort him, however, knowing that you also hadn’t had sex in just as long and, thus, held no expectations for him.
“I-I’m ready, Lix,” you moaned, grabbing his wrist. “I need you. Waited so long and I can’t do it anymore.”
Felix grabbed your hips and positioned the tip of his cock at your entrance. Just before he pushed in, though, he seemed to remember something. He stood up, “Don’t go anywhere, I’ll be right back.”
True to his word, he returned shortly. He sat on his knees in front of you, holding a small, shiny package in his hands. He tore the package open with his teeth and rolled a condom onto his aching dick.
“You ready, pretty girl?”
You nodded quickly, practingly shaking with anticipation. You clung to his arms as he eased into you. He leaned in and kissed you while he pushed in, hoping to distract you from any discomfort. But you had been so eager for him for so long that there was no pain—you just felt full.
“Move, Felix. I need it so bad―”
“Yeah? Want me to give it to you good, mommy?”
The way the word slipped past his lips turned you on more than you were willing to admit. He was the one in charge at the moment, there was no doubt about that, and yet he was calling you something you’d only ever heard from subs. It made you shudder.
You swallowed and whimpered as you answered him, “Yeah. Yes, please.”
He just smirked and started thrusting his hips. He went slower than you liked, but it felt better than when he’d just been still inside of you. Your hands traveled from his biceps to his back, holding tightly as if you were afraid he’d disappear if you let go. He watched your face carefully, looking for any sign you might be in pain, but you only showed him how blissed out you already were.
“Faster,” you finally choked out, only managing the one word before you were reduced to moaning once more.
Felix didn’t hesitate to piston his hips into you harder, faster, angling himself just right so he could hit that perfect spot inside of you that had you seeing stars. Both of you moaned out, enjoying every moment. You couldn’t even form words, too caught up in the pleasure, and all Felix could manage were low groans and fragmented swear words.
“You gonna cum for me, darling?” Felix asked, fingers rubbing at your clit and pace never wavering.
“S-so close, Lix!”
“Cum, then.” His voice was thick with lust, but still gentle. “It’s okay, I’ve got you sweetheart.”
It was a mixture of his voice, his thick cook inside of you, and his fingers rubbing perfectly at your clit that pushed you over the edge. Felix fucked you through your high, pace never wavering even as your cunt pulsed around him and he orgasmed. He moaned loudly, burying his face in your shoulder as he slowed to a halt, breathing heavily.
After a moment, he pulled out slowly, throwing the condom away and getting up. You whined and reached for him, so he helped you to your feet. “Let’s get you to the bathroom and then get you cleaned up, darling.”
He was so gentle with you, cleaning you with a warm washcloth and helping you walk. Your legs were wobbly and you were certain that they would be for the next few days. After you were both finished in the bathroom, Felix changed back into his clothes, pulling his sweatpants on first. You took his shirt from off the ground and pulled it over your own head. He smiled when he saw you in it and he grabbed a hoodie from his closet to wear instead.
“Do you want something to eat? It’s well past lunchtime, you must be hungry.”
“Mmm I am pretty hungry actually.”
He stood at the stove, cooking something quick and easy for the two of you to eat. He cleared his throat, suddenly feeling shy as he thought of what to say next. “So was it… was I… good enough?”
“More than good enough,” you affirmed, moving to wrap your arms around him from behind. “You were perfect. Thank you.”
That made him smile. Neither of you said anything else until after you’d eaten, but the silence was comfortable. It felt nice to just be with him, even if you weren’t talking about anything in particular. You curled up on the couch together, putting on a movie, but you didn’t really know what it was about. You were too focused on Felix.
“So… are we like… together now?” You finally asked the question that had been burning in the back of your mind since you’d talked about trying things out.
Felix giggled, pressing a gentle kiss to your neck. “I thought that was pretty clear, but yes. I would love to be your… boyfriend. I-If that’s what you want, of course.”
And you just nodded, because it was what you wanted. It was all you’d ever wanted. You were grateful you’d met Felix. Even with your daughter, the past five years had been lonely.
“I’ll always want you. I love you.”
“I love you so much more.”
You weren’t sure what the future held for both of you, but you knew that you could handle it as long as you had Felix there with you.
