I’ve recently re-arrived at the conclusion that Philza Minecraft is a bad father, and that no canon revelations have actually changed this fact, because surprisingly, the Tommy drama has had absolutely no bearing on this.
How do I know Philza is a bad parent? Well, he killed his son.
That should be the be-all and end-all, but for some reason Wilbur’s assisted suicide is seen as the... right thing to do? Especially by defenders of Philza. I don’t quite understand why. Here’s something I didn’t think needed to be said: the implication that the only way for a suicidal person to be happy is through death is incorrect!
Philza claimed that Government forced him to kill Wilbur. This is untrue; while he kept correspondence with his son, he clearly had no idea what L’Manberg was like, because he kept property there while he made up his mind. Also, Government only drove Wilbur to final breakdown. It never actually forced Philza to do anything about it. Nobody forced him to stab.
Philza arrived at the button room, saw his son’s spiral, protested weakly, and you know what he did that makes him a bad father? He gave up on Wilbur. A reasonable parent would’ve attempted to get their suicidal son some help. Maybe restrain them if need be.
It’s not as if Wilbur was actively threatening to kill himself. This is why it’s different to a typical suicide response for which you can’t be trained for. Wilbur handed him the sword, and asked Phil to make the choice. And in that moment, Phil made the choice to kill him, when he could have said no. If he failed to stop Wilbur from stabbing himself, this story would be different. But that’s not the case.
There’s a claim that Wilbur would’ve done it himself, so Phil was right. It’s easily debunked. Wilbur made no indication that he would do it himself, so this assumption was, at that point in time, entirely unfounded.
And you know what makes it worse? Philza takes no real blame for it. He pins it on the government, then he says he thinks he did the right thing because his son asked for it. Philza, your son was having a breakdown. Was it really right to assist that? Because he sure as hell isn’t healing in Hell.
TL;DR - Philza’s relationship with Tommy never had bearing on his bad parenthood. He was a bad father ever since he chose to kill his suicidal son and act like it was right of him.
I’m not wrong though :)
