about celebrities ‘not doing enough’ ––
in our society, celebrities carry more influence that we immediately realize. we love them, we follow them, we criticize them, and we hate them. in times of CRISIS We notice when they Do Not speak. We notice when they Do Speak. Some are no more or less educated than us, with life experiences similar to our own. they are just people like us— only armed with millions of dollars and millions of fans with millions of opinions that they cannot control. (the money tho––…. we’ll never really know how they use it)
but
WE put the weight on celebrities, WE keep SEEKING validation from these celebrities, WE follow their lives and movements and forget to THINK for our fucking selves. yes, ‘applaud’ them for using their platforms and posting links or speaking out, but there is no need to GLORIFY or VILIFY how much or how little they do. that’s like… feeding into cold & dystopian idolship. THEY don’t know more than we do, THEY shouldn’t be our whistleblowers to RACISM and INJUSTICE that we can see for ourselves every fucking day. it’s been HERE… this whole time. no need to wait for them to catch up.
i know that millionaires, A-listers, people at the top can always do more, but that doesn’t mean we put all our strength into trusting them to do that. WE have to make the changes ourselves, and BE the voice ourselves. fight with what we HAVE, not what we WISH we had . if they join us great, if they don’t, then they get to stew wih their apathetic money and guilt for their days.
WE are bigger than them, louder than them. remember that. WE can make change too, by voting, donating, speaking out, and showing up. please don’t be passive and then ‘attack’ celebrities for not doing ‘their part’ soon enough. because WHO FUCKING CARES
and, sorry, i just gotta add that addressing 30+ million people, on your birthday over racism in another country (and undoubtedly your own) is a nerve wracking task. i’m not giving him an excuse or praise, i just have to remind everyone that we function at different capacities.
our failure with containing Covid 19 in America should have been a blatant lesson to learn from. We MUST stand together to fight the glaring issue at hand, and then go back to pick up the pieces and build again. big picture right now, guys. we’re living on the same rock, we should protect and uplift our friends who live in it.
so, when ‘celebrities’ or public figures speak up, they are standing AMONG us–– not above us. PLEASE remember that.
it’s not in the result but in the waiting that you grow the most. just a friendly reminder to be kind to yourself :)
a gentle reminder that you’re not untalented, dumb or slow just because you’re learning. be patient with your progress. let yourself be a beginner.
