When you use phrases like, “as long as you’re healthy” these are just a few of the people that your language is excluding.  No one owes you health.  Being healthy does not make you a good person, and being unhealthy does not make you a bad person.  The state of a person’s body does not reflect their soul, their mind, or their worth as a human being.

Hi Tumblr. My name is Shane Burcaw, and I’m the hipsterly-dressed dinosaur creature in the wheelchair above. The beautiful girl is my girlfriend Anna. We were climbing a mountain (in Tom’s and khakis, obviously).

As some of you know, I created a nonprofit organization called Laughing At My Nightmare, Inc. to help people living with my disease. Look at my (sexy) bod in the pic above: keeping that hunk of man meat alive is expensive as hell. From breathing machines, to feeding tubes, to the bathroom equipment that lets me poop when I need to, the cost of living with SMA is astronomical. Luckily, I have always had the items I need, but there are thousands of people in my position who don’t have those things. 

I can change that, like forreal. And I’m not going to stop until I do. 

I’ve created a program through my nonprofit called No More Nightmares. The idea is simple: We give away the vital items that people with muscular dystrophy need to thrive. If I can change one life, I’ll be happy, but my dream is to change the world.
