Sometimes I think about Billy Black and I want to cry.

He lost his wife and it was so hard on his daughters that they both moved away at the first opportunity. When he started losing the mobility of his legs I’m sure it was devastating for him, not only because Billy is a proud, active man who once dreamed of becoming a shape shifter and protecting his tribe but also because it meant that Jacob started taking on new responsibilities such as helping him get around. I’m sure that ate away at Billy; feeling like a burden is not something I can imagine him adjusting to with ease.

Then he gets a phone call from Carlisle Cullen who tells him (he doesn’t ask him, he gives him no leeway, no room to argue, he just tells him) that he and his family are returning to Forks. There will be vampires in Forks again and he is too old to become a protector for the tribe, as he once wished he could be. Instead, he knows that burden will fall on his son’s shoulders. I don’t think there was a single doubt in Billy’s mind that Jacob would transform; would be forced into this role of protector. And he was powerless to stop it.

Imagine Billy’s frustration when Jacob refuses to take the legends seriously, imagine him seeing Sam be the first to transform, imagine losing one of your best friends for years because he refuses to listen to your justified anger at the Cullens and you can’t tell him why you’re angry, imagine watching your son’s friends transforming one by one and knowing that at any moment Jacob could be next. Imagine it finally happening. That first transformation must have been so scary for Jacob and it’s not something that Billy has been through personally so Jacob has to look elsewhere for guidance. I bet that really hurt. Not being able to be the one to help him through this. Of course, I’m certain Jacob did look to Billy, listen to him tell the legends again now that he knew they were true, but he also has to depend on the pack now and Billy, who has had to depend on Jacob for so long must have wanted with everything in him to be able to provide whatever Jacob needed.

I would have been so angry. At the Cullens for coming back. At Bella for siding with them despite knowing the truth. At the world.

I know he’s a fictional character, created by a racist mormon, but I love Billy Black with my whole heart.
