Autism Speaks fought against and killed a bill (1047) that:
- was meant to ensure school staff would be trained to support nonspeaking students before school starts
- would protect nonspeaking students who need AAC from segregation
- would prevent the use of IQ tests to deny access to AAC
IDEA is supposed to put these protections in place, but they don’t happen. This bill was brought forth because nonspeaking students are still being unfairly segregated and not offered AAC at all.
Teachers want to support nonspeaking people! They want the training!
And Autism Speaks just killed the bill that would help so many nonspeaking people.
So tell me again how they’re so great, because once more they are silencing autistic voices.
Autism Speaks doesn’t want nonspeaking autistic people to speak because it will break the carefully crafted tragedy narrative they’ve built up and struggle to maintain.
A link to the Twitter thread is under the cut so tumblr doesn’t eat this out of tags.
A mom to a nonspeaking child tried to advocate to help her child and people like him and was basically shot down by Autism Speaks.
Twitter thread.
Autism Speaks came into the replies trying to gaslight the op, and they got splattered by autistic people.

For those who don’t know:
Tom Ruegger is the original creator of Animaniacs. He’s the guy you have to thank for the iconic characters Yakko, Wakko, and Dot (for whom the primary inspiration was his own three sons.) Among many others, including the equally popular Pinky and the Brain. He was also an involved writer/lyricist for the show and played a huge part in coming up with new song & story ideas.
Yet despite all of this, Tom was never asked back for the 2020 reboot. In fact, he wasn’t even aware that a reboot was in production until it was announced to the public. Although Tom has expressed plenty of interest in being involved in the reboot, WB/Hulu has repeatedly turned him away.
Tom’s oldest son, Nate Ruegger (voice of Skippy Squirrel,) has spoken out about this on his twitter:
“the naked greed on display here to reboot a series without involving any of the original creative team so they can make *more* money, & then joke about it, is gross.” (x)
And he’s absolutely right. Outside of the main voice cast, none of the original team was consulted for the reboot. Tom was/is an integral part of Animaniacs. Without him, the show would never have existed, let alone become a cultural phenomenon. It doesn’t seem right for him to be cut out of the revival of a show that he is largely responsible for bringing to life in the first place.
The mistreatment and blatant disrespect of creators by big-name companies is something I’ve seen way too much of lately, and even though this is far from the first time, that doesn’t make the practice in anyway right or okay.
I’ve seen petitions for this going around, but they rarely gain enough traction, so I’m taking a more direct approach:
I’m asking fans of the series - new & old alike, regardless of your opinion on the reboot itself - to please reblog this. Or, simply spread the hashtag #BringBackTomRuegger somewhere on your social media.
So that we can let the new showrunners know that we, the fans, want to see Tom brought back for future seasons!!!
I’m not asking for a full rewrite, I just want the man who created these characters to have some say in what happens to them, as he should. Please share to show support, if you agree!

Still gotta add a little color
Just Like Clockwork
("Bones" McCoy x gn!engineer!reader)
Trigger Warnings: fluff?; mentions of injuries; descriptions of injuries; mild swearing; mentions of alcohol
It's kind of short and might not exactly be perfect, but I hope it's ok...

Bones looked over at the clock. "Any minute now", he thought. "Any minute, Y/N will walk through those doors from engineering with a burn or a sprained wrist."

Down in engineering, you were busy working on fixing something that Scotty was worried about. Your mind started to drift off to if you'd make it through the day without landing yourself in medbay. It's not that you were extremely clumsy, you just happened to accidentally hurt yourself a few times a week. Scotty made a chart for how many times a day per week you specifically got hurt.
A thud followed by pain snapped you out of your thoughts. You had absentmindedly dropped the tool you were using on your foot. "Ow, fuck!" You muttered. Without thinking, you kicked the closest pipe with your hurt foot with a bit too much force. "Again — ow, fuck!!" You groaned as you put some weight on your throbbing foot.
You painfully walked past Scotty as you approached the door. "You hurt yourself again, lass?" Scotty let out a sigh.
"On my way to Bones right now." You stopped just before the door, looking back at Scotty knowing full well what he was about to say.
"Fifth time this week, Y/N. You're a great engineer, but I'm just worried you're gonna get yourself hurt real bad one of these days," Scotty crossed his arms and gave you a look of genuine concern.
You walked back over to him and gave him a hug. "Thanks for worrying about me, Scotty."

Bones was just finishing up rebandaging a science officer's wound they had gotten from an away mission not too long ago when he heard the medbay doors opening. He dismissed the science officer, turning around to see you standing at the end of a medbay bed, favoring one foot over the other.
"What'd you do to your foot, Y/N?"
"I think I bruised it for sure."
"Let me take a look," he let out a very audible sigh.
You hopped onto to the side of the bed, and took off your shoe and sock. Your toes were subtle shade of red. There was a nice redish sore spot on the top of your foot.
"I'm going to guess by the look of that Scotty should assign me some light stuff that keeps me off my feet for the rest of my shift. Then, after I clock out, I head immediately to my room and keep my feet up?" You asked calmly.
"Your nearly correct. What I was thinking is that, like you started with, Scotty gives some light stuff to work on that'll allow you to keep your foot up, and, afterwards, I was hoping you'd like to get a drink with me?" That last part caught you off guard a little.
"Bones, are you asking me on a date?"
"I might be."
"When does your shift end?" You both couldn't stop smiling, trying to figure out which drink you'd both be getting.
