〖 extra 〗one.five — the gum
"Do you think your father would have wanted you to squander your potential like this?"
Yoongi's head snapped to you even though your back was still turned. He had no idea your father passed away. He never got the opportunity to meet him but he never believed the rumors swirling around campus that he was pulling strings to get you good grades. Yoongi had seen the veteran in several news articles and press conferences and knew immediately he was what a cop should be. Honest and humble with a strong desire to help people. A good man. Yoongi held the same ambition when he initially enrolled into the KNPU. That eventually got lost sometime after the first year.
"Does your mother know about these opportunities you've passed up?"
Yoongi stood stock-still, dumbfounded by what was transpiring. He harbored a long-lasting hatred for you for what you did but surely this was going too far, right? To use your father's death and the financial status of your mother against you just to get you to accept a promotion and join a new task force seemed a bit deplorable. For a brief moment, he wondered if Chief Lee would have gone through the trouble to get him if he had declined the offer too.
The anger that started to bubble up at the realization that he probably wouldn't have faded immediately when Yoongi saw the look in your eyes as you finally turned around. There was a mist, an overwhelmingly deep sadness, to them which he had only seen once in his lifetime. He involuntarily shuddered as he remembered the scene.
"Honestly, sir, if I had followed what my mother wanted, I would have never joined the force in the first place." you spat back to Chief Lee, whose smug look immediately shifted into disapproval, and walked out the door. Even slammed it behind you for good measure.
"That insolent little…" Chief Lee growled behind clenched teeth. "I didn't even say she was dismissed!"
He kept talking but Yoongi didn't hear him. His head was too full of questions from what had just transpired. Shifting his gaze to the hardwood flooring just in front of the door, something shiny caught his eye. When he went to pick it up, he noticed it was a foil sleeve of gum. Not just any kind of gum. He knew this brand. He saw it on the wall of the convenience store with all the packs of cigarettes every time he went to buy a 6-pack and go home. It was nicotine gum. He pocketed the sleeve.
"Senior Inspector Min! Are you even listening to me?!"
The shouting of his name snapped him out of his thoughts and he turned back around to his superior.
"Sorry, sir. What did you say?"
"I said your next step is to go to Yongsan station and collect the rest of your team." Chief Lee repeated indignantly.
"Yongsan, sir? You don't mean for me to try to convince her—"
"No, not her. She'll cave on her own...eventually," he had a sinister glint in his eye that honestly made Yoongi a little sick. "You'll be picking up your team from members of Squad Two."
'Squad Two? Why does that sound so familiar? Wait, isn't that—'
"Why Squad Two, sir?"
"Well, you're already familiar with a few of them, aren't you? You've worked with Officer…" Chief Lee slipped on a pair of reading glasses, opened a folder on his desk, and flipped through some pages. "Kim Taehyung before, right? He was stationed in Daegu before transferring here."
"Yes, but—"
"And you've collaborated with Inspectors Kim Namjoon and Jung Hoseok before during that string of tech robberies from Seoul to Daegu, it looks like."
"Yeah, but—"
"Perfect! Two birds with one stone!"
Yoongi was starting to understand what the other, unmentioned, more important "bird" was. Now that he didn't have the distraction of your eyes, his anger started bubbling up again and he bolted out of the room.
He wasn't sure why he was sprinting. Or why he took the stairs instead of the elevator. Yoongi's vision was drowned in a sea of red. He didn't stop until he reached the front doors of the SMPA. It was starting to look like a lost cause as he searched the forecourt outside from the large-paned windows in the lobby. After scanning back and forth a couple of times, he finally spotted you heading towards the main road and he ran out of the door. As soon as he knew you were in earshot, Yoongi began calling your name.
You didn't stop. If anything, it seemed like you started walking faster. It only made the red behind his eyes get darker. He picked up his pace and finally caught up to you.
"Hey! Are you ignoring me?!" Yoongi panted out, grabbed your arm, and spun you around.
Yoongi just blinked when he realized he had no plan for any of this and felt the rage fading quickly upon seeing your face. The look you had was one of mostly agitation, a dash of anger, and the faintest hint of sadness leftover from Chief Lee's office. He almost felt compelled to offer his condolences for your loss. But a flash of a memory—waking up to the white-tiled ceiling of the hospital after a surgery and a university official shaking his head disapprovingly in the corner—made it impossible to apologize to the person who made that happen.
"Isn't it, like, rule number one? Don't ignore your supervisor?" he said instead, smirking at the thought of at least having rank on you.
"Well, you're not my supervisor so…" you said after wrestling your arm out of his grasp.
Before Yoongi could respond, you were already turning back around, walking away. He growled to himself in frustration and past you before stopping directly in front of your path.
"Get out of my way," you spat from behind the palm of the hand that was pinching your nose. "I have case files probably piling on my desk as we speak."
"Didn't Chief Lee say they were going to be handed down to the other detectives and officers while we go to Itaewon?" Yoongi asked, genuinely confused.
"Do I really need to spell it out for you? There's no 'we'. You're going to Itaewon. I'm going back to Yongsan." you stated matter-of-factly, motioning between the two of you respectively.
Yoongi was even more confused as you stepped around him to continue your journey. Was there something he was missing? He turned around and followed you, determined to figure it out.
"Wait, you're not joining the unit?"
"Didn't you get that memo five minutes ago?" you answered with a tone Yoongi didn't particularly care for.
"You only said that you didn't want the promotion." he said, recalling the conversation in the office, trying to remember if he had missed you outright denying the transfer as well as the promotion.
"I thought walking out was enough, but since you seem to need help," you said, huffing before continuing. "No, I'm not joining the unit."
Yoongi could only watch as you reached the street and hailed a cab faster than anyone he'd ever seen. What luck you had. He usually had to wave his arm for about five minutes to get a cab to stop. You climbed into the back but paused for a moment before closing the door.
"Good luck, Senior Inspector Min."
And with a small nod of your head at him, you were gone. There was a hint of finality to that well-wish mixed in a sincerity he hadn't expected given all the sarcasm being thrown around in the last twenty minutes. Was that really the last you would ever see each other? Despite the close proximity of Yongsan's station to Itaewon's—being in the same district—there was a very real possibility there. If it weren't for the task he had just been given.
Standing on the curb, he sighed and ran a hand through his hair. Now he knew exactly why he was being sent to Yongsan to collect the members of his new unit. Or should he say your unit? He was just a pawn in this game he was forced to play and the end goal was you. But what else could he do? Be a delivery boy? He was sure his parents would be thrilled to see their thirty-year-old son slinging pizzas for minimum wage plus shitty tips instead of trying to find… No, if he was going to be forced to play along, at least he could try and have some fun with it. And making your life hell was pretty damn entertaining. How did the saying go? "Misery loves company"?
Yoongi finally noticed the intense buzzing in the right front pocket of his dress pants. He slid a hand in, brushing against the foil sleeve of the nicotine gum you had dropped in your rush from Chief Lee's office. Leaving the gum, he pulled out his cell phone and rolled his eyes at the name displayed on the caller ID. He'd suspected as much.
"Yes, sir?"
"Where the hell did you run off to?! I wasn't done talking to you!" Chief Lee practically screamed into his ear. Yoongi had to pull the phone away for a moment.
"Sorry, sir. I'm right out front. I'll come back up."
"Forget it! Yongsan! Now!"
He then heard the click that indicated the call had ended. Yoongi sighed.
"Well…let the games begin."
—
By car, it only took Yoongi about five minutes to get from HQ to the Yongsan station. Even with morning traffic. He parked his black sedan out front, stepped out, and took a moment to take in his surroundings. The building itself was unimpressive in comparison to HQ but he'd rather be stationed here than in Itaewon. He made a disgusted face thinking about the tiny building awaiting him later. He'd only seen it once, never went in, but already knew the unit was going to practically be on top of each other there.
Yoongi shrugged and returned to his task. He hadn't been inside this station either so he had to stop an officer walking by where Squad Two was located. They told him he needed to go to the third floor and directed him to the hallway where he could find the elevators up. Yoongi thanked him and made his way up. When the doors opened, the squad members were all standing directly in front of them.
"Inspector, what happened?!" one shouted.
"That's…not her, Jungkook." the tallest one, Yoongi recognized as Namjoon, replied.
"Well, I can see that now!" Jungkook pouted. "Damn, she always has snacks..."
"Oh! Is that you…Inspector Min?"
"Hey, Officer Kim. Long time no see," Yoongi replied to Kim Taehyung. "You guys, uh, mind moving so I can get out?"
The group collectively blanched and quickly stepped out of the way. Yoongi walked out of the elevator and straightened his jacket.
"It's Senior Inspector Min now, isn't it?" Namjoon asked. "Saw the email last year, I think."
Everyone made a small bow to him.
"Congrats, Yoongi!" came a peppy response from somewhere in the middle of the huddle
"Thanks, Hoseok. Good to see ya." Yoongi said and chuckled.
He paced around the bullpen for a moment before turning back around to the group, who had followed his every move and were now staring at him.
"So, uh…what brings you here, Senior Inspector?" Officer Park Jimin asked.
"Waiting for your other inspector," he leaned against a desk and checked his watch. "She's taking a while…"
"Oh! Do you know her?" Taehyung asked.
"We're old…classmates."
He couldn't even lie and say the word "friends". Yoongi spotted a bag of chips sitting on the desk he was leaning on. Usually, he wouldn't bother with something that he knew belonged to someone else but he was famished. He had been up since midnight, took several different trains from Daegu to Seoul, picked up a rental car, and now this. All without eating a single thing. Plus, he didn't think it would be a bad idea to show them who's boss—even if they didn't know it was him yet. He picked the bag up, opened it, and began chowing down.
"H-hey! Those are—ow!" Seokjin pouted and rubbed his ribs where he just was elbowed.
"I'll get you a snack later, hyung." Namjoon said quietly to his elder before turning back to Yoongi. "I'll text her and let her know you're waiting then."
"No!" Yoongi shouted suddenly.
Namjoon, who already pulled out his phone and began typing, stopped mid-sentence and blinked in confusion.
"Just…ah, tell her she has a visitor. I want it to be a surprise."
The inspector seemed to think about it for a minute before nodding and going back to typing. Yoongi killed some time by catching up with the members he had worked with previously and formally introducing himself to the ones he hadn't. Several minutes later, Namjoon mentioned that you must be close by as you had responded—about five minutes ago—asking who the visitor was. One by one, they all started pulling out their cell phones and texting.
Was this really to be the others in the unit? Yoongi was starting to think it might not be a bad idea to have you in the unit after all. He hated you but at least he knew you were competent. You and he were neck-to-neck in terms of number of cases solved. Oh, how HQ loved their unnecessary news and statistics emails.
The ding of the elevator pulled Yoongi from his thoughts. You were looking down at your phone, probably reading the barrage of texts your squad sent. He smirked when he saw your eyes roll and look up but you hadn't seen him yet. He was going to fix that.
"What took you so long?" he asked smugly and crossed his arms, the trademark smirk still on his lips.
The mixture of emotions on your face was priceless.
"What are you doing here?" you spat, walking past him to what he presumed was your desk.
The rest of the squad was watching intently. All they needed was a big bowl of popcorn and a slushie and this could have been a movie for them. Yoongi followed you, pulling the foil sleeve from his pocket, and slapping it atop of the desk you had just tossed your messenger bag on to.
"You dropped your gum, thought I'd return it."
