In my opinion, what Ziva does for Cassidy in Grace Period is something that describes her character perfectly.

She purposefully antagonizes Paula. And while at first we find this extremely out of character and, well, bitchy, we soften when Ziva reveals her true reason. She’s doing it to help Paula get through her grief, by giving her someone to focus all her anger on. When it’s pointed out to Ziva that the downside to it is that Paula will most likely hate her, Ziva responds that she can deal with that if it means Paula will have an outlet for her anger.

Ziva knows grief. She knows it far too well. She’s lost her mother, her sister, her childhood best friend, her brother, and surely many more people close to her. She understands how grief works, and she uses that to help other people, without asking for recognition in return. She’s a martyr, but one that does not care to be recognized for it. She suffers in silence while putting on a brave face and going to work everyday to try and help others. She has never depended on happy endings for herself but has tried so very hard for others to find theirs, even if that happy ending does come at some sort of sacrifice from herself.

It’s a small role that Ziva plays in Grace Period, but if it doesn’t describe her character perfectly then I don’t know what does.
