YouTuber “Egos” and related media characters and story lines are actually just toned down ARGs in the puzzles and codes they present for fans to solve as well as in their presentation and narrative style. Their popularity as a media form allows the less than technically capable but nonetheless devoted viewer to understand the concepts presented without the “game” mechanics. However, the communities spawned by these large fan bases allows for those interested in the “game” to easily communicate and solve presented puzzles and codes, and interact with the more theoretical and lore based portion of the fans for an informational exchange. This unique combination of large initial following, small hints of ARG and “lore” related content over the years, and the media platform of YouTube is why the “egos” of popular YouTubers are intriguing in their ability to create the basis of any well played ARG - a motivated, comminicative, and borderline obsessed audience willing to do anything to figure out the game.
