Do you have any tips for the more technical side of writing? Currently in uni and taking a comms/writing based class and my prof keeps docking points for grammar mistakes. Prof says my writing overall is fine, it’s just some grammar and punctuation mistakes but for the life of me I don’t get all these rules sometimes but i’m tryinggg i swear 🙏

Redraft, always. A first draft is just a sketch of ideas - it might be a very good sketch, but still just a sketch. Fine tune, rewrite, always aim to clarify. Stephen King got it dead-on when he said that you write your first draft of anything with the door closed: you're explaining it to yourself, in whatever way you understand it best at the time. When you redraft, you do it with the door open: trying to make sure everyone understands what you mean.

If it's a short piece of work, go through it once in silence and clean up. Then read it out loud. As I've explained to my students, we already know all the grammatical rules we need - if we didn't our speech would be unintelligible. Discard the technical terms and focus on clarity: does it sound right? Does it sound clear? Is it possible someone might misunderstand you? Reading out loud really helps.

If it's a long piece of work feed the text into a text to speech programme. You absolutely will find the snags if you sit and listen. I did that throughout my PHD and the change in my work was considerable.

Beyond that - the Elements of Style by Strunk and White is an incredible resource, and very, very short. Also start every assignment well before it's due to give yourself plenty of redraft and rewrite time.
