“Why don’t you go to sleep, doll.”

“Don’t want to…”

“It’s late.”

“You’re late.”

A quiet huff.

“And you’re tired. Just sleep.”

“I’d…” You drift off, not knowing how much time passes before you exhale. “I would if I was there.”

“Yeah. Cus I’d make you. Like now.”

“Mmph.” You breathe in deeper, feeling like you won’t have a say regardless in a few seconds. “What’re you gonna do.”

“I dunno. Maybe work on something.”

Your acknowledgement is more of a sigh than spoken syllables, already one foot into unconsciousness. The only thing you remember whispering with some effort is a low, quiet,

“Night, Yoongi.”

And exhaustion finally takes you.

When you wake up a few hours later, you expect the phone to be off and the call done.

So when you hear static and soft hints of breathing next to your head, you think you’re still asleep.

And you don’t have the heart to end the call.

Yoongi was talking to a girl. 

She was pretty - in that conventional sort of way. When she flicked her hair back to show her neck, classic mating move by the way, and threw her head back to show more neck, you caught a better look at her. Even across the court, you could see her impeccable makeup and outfit. Put together. Symmetrical. Nothing was out of place, out of the ordinary.

“You’re staring.”

“Shit, man! You fucking scared me!”

Hobi smiles at you, watching the game unfold in front of him. You’d met him on the first day of the new semester. And six months later, he was one of the only people on campus you tolerated - Yoongi being the first, newspaper crew being the second. 

“Sorry.” He said, bumping shoulders with you. “Is that his girlfriend?”

“I’m sure she wants to be.”

Yoongi never had any trouble with women. Or men. People flocked to him. He possessed a quiet confidence that put everyone at ease. And he was smart. And kind. Everyone loved him. And anyone who didn’t, well, let’s just say…..you wouldn’t hear from them again. They might as well be socially extinct. 

You on the other hand, sat in that weird place where you couldn’t decide whether to bask in the love everyone showed him and thereby showed you or resent it. Yoongi was your best friend. Yours. You’d known each other…..God, how long has it been? It feels like forever. And after meeting him, you didn’t particularly feel like expanding your social circle. Why would you need to? You had him. Right? Right?

“What?”

“No, you’re driving.”

“Yeah, so hurry up.”

Instead of going for a dangerous option such as his lips, or even a safer one like his cheek, you decide to comply on your own terms. Clutching his fingers resting on the gearshift, you bring his hand up to your face—ignoring the curious glance he shoots—and plant the softest peck on his knuckles.

“There,” you finally respond, shy when you realize how intimate that probably was. Letting his palm free, you quiet your voice when you ask, “Happy?”

When Yoongi doesn’t answer, you swing your eyes toward the driver’s seat.

And almost burst at the way he’s most definitely covering his own shyness with a nose scratch.

“Are you blushing?”

“You can’t just do that, doll.”

“You are!”

“Nah.”

“Liar!”

“I’ll pull this car over.”

“Oh my god, you have both hands on the wheel, I’m gone—”

Yoongi unlocks the car with a flick of his fingers, and laughs outright at the yelp you make when you hastily lock your door again.

And when you finally get back to his place, you test his aversion, teasing him with laughter every time he yanks his hands away.
