No, I'm not going crazy

I constantly think about the quote (literally no idea what it’s from) I read once about how teenage girls want to fuck their band guy idols because it’s the closest they can get to wanting to BE their band guy idols. Like damn… way to recontextualize my entire adolescence with 1 sentence

I'm on the verge of quitting everything. I've been crying all day. I'm tired of putting up a candid face when social media is scr*wing over trans creators or only showing my art to anti-trans suicide-baiters. Even though this has been my most productive year ever, in terms of online content, I get comments practically every day about how rarely people get to see my posts in their feed.

Since last winter's natural disaster, we haven't been able to afford groceries. We haven't had hot water since March. I've been late on student loans and car payments for months. Orders are late and I feel like I'm failing everyone.

On top of that, I'm still regularizing my situation in this country, and in that context, I just received a letter telling me that as a self-employed artist, I'm obligated to put a monthly $700 in a private retirement fund (and pay the 21 months backlog since I officially started paying taxes here). The only other options are to quit art or go back to Canada.

I've talked in the past few months about the necessity for the survival of this project to double the amount of subscribers on patreon. Each time, social media killed the reach of these posts. I'm not expecting this one to do better. However, it has never been more urgent. There needs to be about 200 new subs or I might be forced to shut it all down. I'm really scared and I wish this wasn't the only way.

Do y’all remember that time that someone discovered facial recognition cameras couldn't see through Juggalo makeup, then Facebook had a fun “see what you'd look like with Juggalo makeup” thing, and then facial recognition cameras could suddenly see through Juggalo makeup?

Do y’all remember how, on Twitter, Elon started a tirade against artists who ask for credit when their art is reposted, and he suddenly he created one of the first big art AI programs?

Do y’all remember how AI destroyed the field of freelance translation, despite the inferiority of the machine translations, because companies didn’t care about the quality of the translations? They just wanted it done for free?

Do y’all know how companies will see a lot of money going into a New Tech Thing (like, say, AI art apps) and will jump to try and implement that New Tech Thing into their tech? For example, how it felt like every big company and celebrity had an NFT to sell?

Just wondering.

Ok I know I normally don’t make posts like this, but I’ve seen a lot of people talk about Harry’s relationship with Dora and how strange it is that he grieved their relationship for so long.  And like I get it, but your kind of missing the point?  Of the game?  Sure, he loved her, but it’s more than just... he was a really big wife guy or something.  To Harry, Dora was a symbol of the new age, something he had built his entire identity around.  When Dora left him, it was the moment that he realized the best of his days were gone and he’d lost everything.  

And that’s kind of the core of his character.  The whole game actually.  The new age was young and bright and people thought it would last forever, but the flame burnt out and left very little behind.  Harry is someone chasing down a past he can’t remember.  He wants more than anything to be young and cool again and it’s his central motivation.  It’s why he tries so hard to get the approval of the ravers.  It’s why he obsesses over Kim for his cool factor.  It’s why he steals the jackets from the wannabe skulls.  It’s why the way he dresses is an important mechanic of the game and why he seeks out clothes with a 'cool' factor to them.  It’s why he tries so hard to win Her back, because maybe if she’s there he’ll have his old life back and everything will be fixed.

And again, this reflects back on one of the main themes of promises left unfulfilled.  Of enthusiastic energy that burns out with time and reality.  Martinaise was promised revitalization.  Fortress Accident and the other denizens of the cursed financial district were promised success.  The revolution promised a new era.  Harry was promised a marriage.  The RCM promised order and security.  Dolores Dei promised great progress.  Etc. Etc.  All fail or die before they can.  And the game doesn’t portray this as hopeless.  There’s beauty in the cycle.  New beginnings that fall to ruin and then new beginnings that arrive from the ashes.  After death, life, after life death again.

I absolutely will die on this hill, access to fiction that makes your skin crawl and open discussion about it is the best way to keep that skin crawling fiction from happening in reality.

It doesn't matter if it is ~positively~ or negatively portrayed. If you censor it, we don't talk about it, then we can't protect against it.
