Thanks for sharing. Great questions and pictures

Strange Angel at ATX TV Festival

I made sure to awake early enough to not forget anything, but the best laid plans…I ran out of the house without my sweater (for the cold movie theatre) or an umbrella (to shield me from the fierce Texas sun), and my phone on 20% battery! I plugged the cord into my phone last night, but somehow the cord was Ā not plugged into the wall šŸ™ƒ

The Uber driver got me to my first destination safely. (I didn’t feel like worrying about driving and parking downtown.) I had to pick up my wristband before walking about a block to the Alamo Drafthouse Ritz, where I would screen the first episode of Strange Angel and hopefully meet Rupert!

At first, I was in the line to the right and got a cuteĀ ā€œboarding passā€ for the event, courtesy of Southwest Airlines.

image

Then I realized I needed to be in the line to the left, which was a much shorter line! And I got a new boarding pass - lucky #5!!

image

After waiting in line and sweating to death for almost an hour, we were allowed inside the venue. I was able to snag a front row seat, sandwiched in between two very large guys, one of whom was hogging the armrest. Luckily they both left right after the screening, so I had plenty of room to take notes and see the action up front!

Some Thoughts on the Show (a few spoilers)

The show was really interesting, with beautiful cinematography. We’ve all seen pictures of the period cars and clothing, but seeing it all flow together on screen -Ā it’s rather lovely.

Ernest was prominent in the first episode. You’ve already seen the trailer where he meets Jack Parsons and his wife. There’s a little more to that exchange, but I don’t want to spoil it. Ernest is every bit an eccentric nonconformist, to say the least, which is why I suspect Rupert enjoyed this role.

For those concerned about animal sacrifices - I will say they did not show any animal slaughtered in the first episode, but it is implied that one is indeed slaughtered offscreen.Ā

And also…Rupert sang a song in a foreign tongue, just briefly, but šŸ˜

Panel Discussion

The panel discussion began with the creator and showrunner, Mark Heyman, who talked about how the idea for the show began four and a half years ago. He grew up in New Mexico with new-aged parents who belonged to a cult-like organization called MSIA (which I assume was Movement of Spiritual Inner Awareness). His best friend’s father was a chemist, and Heyman himself was intrigued by mysticism and science.

(Heyman mentioned he has about five seasons in mind. So if this first season is successful šŸ¤— I think that means MORE RUPERT!)

The panel moderator,Ā Michael Schneider from IndieWire, asked Rupert specifically about his role as Ernest. Rupert stated that playing Ernest felt so different and was a definite departure from Homeland. He described Ernest as aĀ ā€œmysterious guyā€ who is ā€œweirdly, dangerously magnetic and intriguing.ā€ Rupert played Ernest as aĀ ā€œweirdoā€ who gives the audience somethingĀ ā€œthat sucks you in.ā€ He described the relationship between Ernest and Jack as volatile and important.

Because Ernest is not a character in the book, Schneider asked about whether or not he was a composite or completely fictionalized. The character was not a composite, and Heyman described Ernest as much more than a plot device. Ernest is a mentor and guide for Jack into the underworld. As the season develops, their relationship morphs and changes. There is a tug of war, a push and pull, and the relationshipĀ ā€œflopsā€ at a certain point.

When Rupert was asked about a path forward for Ernest in the story, Rupert really demurred and just said theyĀ ā€œhaven’t talked about going forward.ā€ However, it’s obvious Ernest’s role would continue. Herman revealed there is a power dynamic at the start of the series that he likens to Cape Fear - an ā€œintriguing menace.ā€

Q&A Time

When Schneider asked for questions, my hand shot up šŸ–šŸ¼so I got to ask the first question!!! I asked Rupert, considering all the diverse characters he has played, what did he learn from Ernest Donovan, a very eccentric character. Rupert answered,Ā ā€œHow to be a good neighbor.ā€ Everyone laughed because we had just seen how neighborly Ernest and Jack were to one another. Rupert also mentioned learning how to fix cars was cool. The period cars were cool, but NOT easy to drive, according to Reynor.Ā

I asked the third and last question, because no one else raised their hand. I asked about working with the animals - I mentioned a lamb and chicken, and of course, Rupert corrected me that it was a goat. (And I knew it was a goat, like why the hell I said lamb, I don’t know! 😜) But the Director, David Lowery, mentioned he is a vegan and all animals were treated ethically and humanely. Ā He said Rupert had a very calming effect on the animals. (I THINK IT’S THOSE HANDS!)Ā Rupert said the goat was supposed to be kicking during the scene where he holds him, but the goat was ā€œhappy and lovely.ā€Ā Another cute tidbit: the goat had a baby sheep on the set as a buddy. As for Reynor, he said he was aĀ ā€œfucking chicken wrangler.ā€ šŸ˜‚

As the panel ended, I went up to the front quickly, hoping to get a picture and a handshake. A gentleman approached Rupert first and got a picture. Then I stuck my hand out and said,Ā ā€œMay I say hello?ā€ I shook Rupert’s hand (not washing my right hand forever now), and told him it was so great to meet him, I’m a big fan, and look forward to watching his show. Then I asked for a photo, and we took a quick selfie. It’s not the best shot, but I’m so glad I asked!

image

See, he really IS a Strange Angel! That chest is awfully close to my face, too 😚 You can’t really see much of my shirt, but it had a red rose on each shoulder. I thought he might appreciate the gesture šŸ˜‰

Afterward, I waited outside the building to see if he would come out the same way, and he did! I caught another quick pic of him with Reynor and saw others were taking pictures with them. That spot would have been a much better place for a pic, but I didn’t want to be a bother and ask for another one.Ā

image

I stayed behind to watch him for a moment. There was a white van waiting outside with the doors open. I thought it might be their ride, but instead, they stood there longer and then walked away on foot. I was tempted to follow, but didn’t want to turn into a stalker! 😜

Just a couple other things:Ā

Rupert wore the brown, well-worn boots laced up only halfway.

That white shirt was very unbuttoned.

His hair looked pristine, with beautiful twinkling eyes.Ā

I don’t recall smelling Rupert, but he looked fresh!

Rupert was very kind about shaking my hand and taking a picture. I can’t remember a word he said, but I’m pretty sure he answered something in the affirmative when I asked to say hello and take a picture. I’m also pretty sure he said thank you when I gushed over him.Ā

Jack Reynor’s blue eyes POPPED! He’s a funny, handsome devil with a wickedly sexy Irish accent! He described growing aĀ ā€œfilthy fucking mustacheā€ as one of the challenges in making a period piece. šŸ˜‚

Sarah: you seemed convinced, or heavily leaning towards, Carrie is attracted to Dante (maybe even more than sexually attracted or turned on) independent of the play. Her behavior at the bar seemed like šŸ’Æ play followed by anger/disgust, her combo in Ep8 supports anger /revenge (?) towards him ā€œthat man sought me out and used meā€. Do u believe S that she can’t be trusted when it comes to Dante ā€˜cuz her ā€œattractionā€ ala Brody? I see the sex meaningless as a way of figuring out how she feels.

The sex to me has nothing to do with whether or not she believes he’s turned or not. To me, it was just an indicator that despite she still believed he was turned, she wanted to fuck him! In that realm, I suppose, her judgment is compromised.Ā

In other ways, it’s not. As we see in the last moments, she was about to say she believed he was a Russian mole, before they were interrupted.Ā

I think this is a bit different than Brody though. First, Carrie is not in love with Dante. She was in love with Brody. Second, there were points throughout the Carrie/Brody relationship where she still suspected he was turned, despite her feelings (ā€œThe Weekend,ā€Ā ā€œMarine One,ā€Ā ā€œThe Choiceā€). Last, in late season three, we do see her blinded to the possibility that Brody could have maneuvered his way into Iran and totally fucked everyone at the CIA over (including her). She remains steadfast in her conviction that this isn’t really who he is, and she’s ultimately right. The weird thing about the Carrie/Brody relationship is that almost all (or all? I can’t remember) the times Carrie stuck her neck out for Brody, he did end up following through.Ā

So I see tons of differences between the Brody relationship and the Dante relationship but on the surface, to Saul, it may look the same. I’m honestly so past Saul’s hypocrisy though. Was Carrie like,Ā ā€œI can’t trust youā€ back in season five when he was carrying on a months-long relationship with Allison WHO WAS TRYING TO KILL HER????Ā

Get lost, Saul.Ā

Death of Quinn in S5 and repeated again in S6 was too much! Ā It was like mourning a love one all over again! Ā There was no closure for Quinn he died yes as a soldier but at the same time loss everything else - he did not know whom he can trust..loss Astrid, Carrie -waking him up from coma - no closure between both of them even though the first 6 episodes of season 6 teased their maybe a chance between Quinn, Carrie and Franny. Ā It was heartbreaking to see Quinn so broken physically and mentally. Ā Thought that Quinn will be given a chance to some kind of happiness. But nothing i think this is why fans of Homeland are disillusioned with the series. Ā

I still don't know whether the S5 or S6 Quinn death was worse. I'm grateful that we got him for another season and saw Rupert take new risks with this role, but at least we got the letter in S5, as opposed to the bloody slow motion action death. Also I feel weird about the apparent message that Carrie (and we as fans/people?) have to let Quinn go (into the light). Totally uplifting all the way around, huh?

The season six death was way worse IMO. It was silly, ridiculous, and just plain dumb. It just reeked of half-baked plottery. At least in season five we got The Letter and some heartfelt caring from Carrie.Ā

Disappointed too in the article! Unbelievable! Ā Lack of respect for Rupert! Ā Loss of Quinn is major in Season 6 and not one word????But please continue your writing! Cant wait for next chapter!

ā€˜Homeland’ Stars Claire Danes & Mandy Patinkin On Series’ Imperative: ā€œAttention Must Be Paidā€ To A World In Crisis
An awards magnet for Showtime over the course of its six seasons, Homeland has netted the premium cabler four Golden Globes and six Emmys, always with a finger on the pulse of current world events—…

Carrie’s been on the periphery for a while now, and opted out of the intelligence game, and I think she’s ready to re-enter it, and re-engage—put her spy back on. I look forward to that, because she’s excellent at what she does, and it’s really enjoyable to play that. - Claire Danes

No mention of Quinn… which is… there are no words.

It was a great wonderful fic! Keep on writing!

It's hard to believe that, after the kiss, and before Q2.0, Carrie & Quinn only had those 24 hours together (if that) in Berlin. In fact, just how well did they know each other? In Islamabad they were together, what, a week? And she was still getting over Brody. S3 they weren't together much. Wonder if they hung out a bit after Brody died and while she was pregnant? Was he around after she gave birth, or did he leave for Istanbul after the "that kid is a gift scene"?

Okay, stop. Just stop. :-)

First of all, we need to not bestow normal chronology to this show. Carrie knew Brody for something like 11 days.Ā Think of it as a proportion of screen time and you’ll feel better.

With regard to Carrie/Quinn, Islamabad was six weeks, I believe… but that DOESN’T MATTER either. It’s about screen time proportion which for Carrie/Quinn are, like, together in 90% of the episodes in season 4.Ā

Even in season 5 four out of twelve episodes featured CQ together. That’s 1/3 of the season. (I know Quinn was unconscious for half of them, but.. y’know, it was season 5. Btw, season 5 is looking better and better these days, huh?)

Finally, as far as I’m concerned, YES. Quinn definitely stayed with her through the pregnancy. I think I wrote a fic about that here. (I don’t normally self-promote but I’m proud of that fic and I honest-to-God think he’d have hung around to help her.)

In 6.01 what does Carrie really mean when she says that she can't take care of Quinn by herself? Is C worried that she can't keep up with his meds/therapy appointments while taking care of Franny? That Quinn's erratic behavior would be bad for F? Worried about getting too close? Being confronted with his disabilities 24/7 vs during limited hospital visits? It's interesting that C never took F to visit him and they've been in NYC for 3(?) months.

I vote for all of the above.Ā

Have a question on Season 6/episode 11/ when Quinn left and tell Carrie ā€œĀ to let me goā€ and he chasing the Deltas...he went into the light with a bag...and 5 minutes later he shows up at the Flag house protecting Carrie....The storyline was confusing...anybody can provide an explanation...
