The sound of the little bells on the door echoed around you as you and your best friend, Sunoo,  entered the coffee shop you had been meaning to visit on your campus. You weren’t much of a coffee drinker, but today Sunoo had suggested that you accompany him to the cafe as your friends had pretty good reviews.

“You’re buying me something though.” You poke at his shoulder upon walking in, taking a couple of minutes to let your eyes wander around the cozy-looking shop. 

There was a fairly steady stream of customers, drifting in and out of the shop with their friends. The place smelled of freshly brewed coffee and sweet warm caramel and chocolate mix, and you could see an array of freshly baked cookies and muffins displayed at the side. 

The table was made of wood, and the place was lit brightly – so much so that you immediately recognize Yuna from the Veterinary Medicine department in the corner, sipping quietly on what you’d assume was coffee as she breezed through her homework. Beside her was a strict-looking Yeji. You assume the older girl had persuaded Yuna to finally finish her homework by bribing her with free coffee. 

You look behind the counter to keep yourself busy, spotting the frothing machine, a few blenders, jugs of milk, and sacks of coffee beans placed neatly beside the coffee grinder. You could already tell Sunoo was going to be a regular patron of this coffee shop, and as his best friend, you’d be dragged along to come too. 

“We did not get into that agreement, idiot.” You stop looking around the place when you feel a sting on your arm, Sunoo hitting it before walking forward towards the counter as the customer before you had successfully finished relaying his order and was now trying to find a seat.

“Yeah, well we’re having this agreement now.” The initial playful smile on your face is replaced by a dumbfounded expression the moment you meet eyes with the boy behind the counter.

You’re convinced your heart had done a million summersaults when he smiled at you.

MARCH WAS A STRANGE MONTH. 

It was too quiet, serene. The usual chaos that dwindled around was absent - stagnant even. Along with the silence brought a sinking feeling in your stomach, the type that could tell when something horrible was to come, but how would you know? 

You vaguely remember the last time you felt your heart drop to your stomach. It was the summer of 2017, the occasion? Meeting Park Sunghoon for the first time.

Strings of little arguments engulfed the two of you that would unknowingly last until the present, a whole 4 years later. You don’t make an effort to try and make amends, not when he’d continuously humiliate you during class by challenging your answers and bickering your ears off that paying attention to your professor would take twice the amount of effort it should have.

And you’ve tried to cut ties, desperately ignoring him and shutting him out so you don’t have to deal with the bullshit that Park Sunghoon brings, but he makes it so damn near impossible. Every time you duck your head down to avoid his stare, he’d be just as quick to yell out your name and wrap an arm around your shoulder. Every time you asked to switch seats, he’d suddenly be seated beside you the next day. And fuck, you dread asking Sim Jaeyun any help on a project (that by the way, you have together) because it would mean having to talk to Sunghoon too. 

A parasitic relationship, you think. Him being the parasite that leeches off of the host (which happens to be the current role you’re playing, and fuck, you badly wanted to trade roles with someone else and be their understudy instead). It’s the only way you can describe what you have going on - he was hardly a friend, and yet you wouldn’t consider him a stranger either. All you know is he is causing harm to your usually peaceful life.

LEE HEESEUNG. — “you hate me? fine, whatever.”

after heeseung throws his last counter at you, you find yourself finally releasing your pent up anger, suddenly stating that you hated him. it manages to still the atmosphere in a second, but instantly give your lover a throb in his heart. he doesn’t speak for a moment or two, but only shares the same hate in return. he’d be stubborn about it, and continue to act as if it doesn’t matter. he doesn’t care, right? but his expression would say otherwise. a look full of gloom would hover over him, and his lips would start to tremble. it was almost as if the world stopped for a second, allowing heeseung to shatter within. his breath would hitch, and he’d curse to himself if he ever started to sob. In fact, he hates crying in front of you. he could’ve asked for anything more but to see himself fall into a hole of weakness when you’re here; the pained wish breaking as soon as you storm out the door, leaving him bursting with tears. </3

PARK JONGSUNG. — “I hate myself too.”

jay most likely wouldn’t be able to get over your words. as soon as you shoot your ‘i hate you’ arrow into his chest, silence immediately falls. a pained look would creep on his face, intentionally averting your cold eyes that express more than what was given. knowing jay, he’d refuse to believe what you said was true, his heart aching with desperation. he’d hold back his formed tears, wishing he could run from the overflowing embarrassment that chased after him. followed after hee, jay would have a bad habit of gathering pent up anger; and releasing it at the worst situations. as if you two arguing wasn’t enough. maybe he would be the one to leave you first, shifting the opposite direction and slamming the door shut. next thing you know he’s releasing a few tears out back, a long, painful smile drawn across his lips. </3

SIM JAEYUN. — “y-you don’t mean that, right?”

unlike the other two, jake has never been this straight forward with you. given the title of being your boyfriend for several years, he never expected the words ‘i hate you’ to slip off your lips. it instantly causes him to wince at your sharpened tone, an ever so fearful look written across his face. just enough to earn a guilty look from you. you would’ve wanted nothing more but to pull jake into the warmth of your arms, but you were already fuming with anger, immediately turning your back on the poor boy. but jake is already reaching to pull your arm back by the wrist, desperate, sorrow eyes meeting yours as he speaks his final words. but as you struggle to break free, he already has his arms clung around your waist, holding you close whilst tucking his head into your shoulders. it seems like jake could never find it within himself to seek hatred into you, only discovering nothing but love in your eyes. even if you did mean your words, jake would still love you the same. <3

PARK SUNGHOON. — “I hate you too.”

sunghoon’s heart is already aching with anger the moment you spit those three words at him, his expression turning cold. obviously, that wasn’t enough. of course sunghoon was hurt. of course he wanted to cry. of course he felt a strike of pain running into his chest. you think he didn’t want to run into your arms right now and let it out? unfortunately, only a block full of arguments wasn’t allowing him to do so. he never thought one little thing could lead into you hating him in the end. he felt guilty, hurt, but most importantly, angry. due to his overflowing emotions, sunghoon had no choice but to mirror your words, being the first to storm out the door with clenched fists, unnoticed by the way your jaw drops in disbelief. he wished he hadn’t said that at all. he slams the door shut with regret, his back sinking against it, finally giving him the opportunity to finally let it out. cry. </3

KIM SUNOO. — “hate? are you serious?”

sunoo probably would’ve taken your words a lot deeper than it already was. he’d treat it with disgust, painfully rolling his eyes at you and calmly walking out the door as if it was nothing. as if it didn’t matter. little did you know your lover was burning with sadness, shutting the door after him to breath. you wouldn’t even be able to speak without the boy cutting you off, leaving you two isolated in separate rooms. you two could be mumbling insults at each other right now, but you both knew it wasn’t true. maybe sunoo just needed time to himself to process your words and get over it. maybe he needed something to cope with for a matter of days, but all that popped up in his brain was you. if anything, you were his safe place, his comfort, and someone he relied on for years. now that you weren’t by his side, it’s suddenly become harder for him to keep his breath. to keep his tears. to keep him from loving you. </3

YANG JUNGWON. — “I’m sorry.”

jungwon can’t seem to fight back. it seems like every part of the argument is only you shouting at him, whether it would be bringing up his mistakes, or even just calling him an asshole. but everything breaks as soon as you tell him you hate him, leaving a teary eyed jungwon only to still in front of you. he doesn’t say anything, but his expression explains it all. your words are constantly being replayed into his head, and he wouldn’t be able to hold back his tears. in every argument you two been through, it surprisingly led you to the realization that it was quite rare to see your boyfriend sob. all you could think about was the unaffected look on his face, unnoticed by the fact he was hurting inside. that he wished he could say sorry. over, and over..and over again. jungwon probably hasn’t felt this guilty in forever, and your words is the last thing he wants to hear before feeling himself shatter. </3

RIKI NISHIMURA. — “haha, you’re joking, right?”

would riki take your words seriously? of course not. he’d be teasing you ‘till the end of the argument, only to jokingly laugh it off, hoping you were lying. it wasn’t even pure laughter but only painful ones, riki taking any chance he was given to wipe those words away. that you didn’t mean it. you..don’t mean it, right? words like that was constantly being played into his head, fingers refusing to remove themselves from your wrist. but you pull away from his grasp in an instant, the atmosphere growing cold. that once childish smile riki held across his lips had vanished the moment you excuse yourself from the room, disregarding the hand of your lover’s reaching for you once more but pulling back with guilt. the door shuts, and sounds of sniffles are already filling the room. your gestures were more than enough for him to handle, confirming to the boy you weren’t lying. you probably did hate him, and he wouldn’t be able to get over it. now he’s gripping his chest the moment he receives an unusual, but painful feeling inside, giving him nothing but constant heart aches. please don’t leave. </3
