Fishing for the Moon, Chapter 1: Kin -- Astal
Footsteps tramped in the mud, thick and squelching. Without warning, a pair of yellow eyes kindled in the twilight. The shadow of a guard sprawled by the roadside with a pair of pistols beside it, as liquid as it was languid.

Fishing for the Moon, Chapter 10: Destitution, Part 1
Pebbles rattled. Paws splayed against the slope, Sharn looked smaller than ever clinging to the side of the dry riverbed. Twelve feet overhead the freight rail crossed the trench on a rusty, dusty bridge whose slats had long fallen into disrepair. No trains had gone that way for a good forty years. If he looked northeast he could still see fading tracks of railroads and highways out in the distance.

Fishing for the Moon, Chapter 18: Treachery, Part 1
There was a close, musty smell in the room. Slouched on the side of his seat, his elbow propped on the only table, Ira put his head against his hand as he studied a sheet of paper before him, covered in his quick, neat shorthand. His gaze wandered over the draperies on the walls. They clustered so thick he could hardly see the aging wood panels, giving the entire room an air of always being on the verge of shifting. Fishing for the Moon, Chapter 16: Packless, Part 1
A massive palm struck Sharn over the head, making his ears ring. He set his teeth, but Thastan hit him again, buffeting his head and shoulders. Sharn let go and staggered back. For a split second, he blinked face to face with a shaggy hulk, before it swept him aside like a battering ram. He tumbled over, hit the trailer wheel with a yelp, and struggled as Thastan’s nails pierced his ribs.

Fishing for the Moon, Chapter 19: Treachery, Part 2
All alone, Astal tramped through the mud with her rucksack over her shoulders. As she passed by the docks, she stopped and stretched her arms with a sigh. It was a hundred and twenty miles from Kin to Eda, and she had made it in less than two weeks. Then she paused. A crunching noise sounded beneath her feet, overlaid by the tinny echo of a familiar voice. She stepped off the boardwalk and peered underneath.

Fishing for the Moon, Chapter 21: Klyne - Kynen's Journal, Part 2
Kynen’s Journal, Mid-summer under the Leopard Constellation. I had the initial idea of remaining in that glade until Klyne recovered and I had collected enough provisions to last us the journey to somewhere civilized, if she still refused to return to Kitheea. Perhaps we could settle in the town where that kind lady had offered me sanctuary. I wish I had asked her name.
