Christianity Tw - Tumblr Posts
*tired ex Christian voice* for the umpteenth time my brethren in Christ, purity culture is not only about sex.
It's part of it, yes. But anyone who's actually been in the thick of it can tell you that the church leaders, youth pastors, youth group, Bible camp, etc, they all told us that The Reason Why we were all abstaining from "sexual impurity" was for the greater reason of distancing ourselves from "moral impurity". Or did you think the Satanic Panic, the Great Ban on Rock Music, D&D, and Vaguely Ethnic Wall Art, was separate from that philosophy? I can tell you right now it's not. The Fundie attempt to control people's sexuality was but a symptom of the overall disease that is Purity Culture. Pls stop trying to tell me that purity wank, fandom or otherwise, has nothing to do with toxic Christian purity wank. My lived experience, and the lived experience of countless others, says otherwise.
Lmfao as a religious trauma survivor and a product of Christian fundie indoctrination myself I am in full support of calling fandom wank "purity culture" and the use of the word "puriteen" as well actually.
It perfectly encompasses what purity culture was. It wasn't just about "no sex before marriage"; it policed every fucking thing you did and forced you to walk on eggshells your entire life so your Magical Sky Daddy didn't clutch His heavenly pearls at your naughty behaviours.
Holding hands with someone you weren't married to? Gateway to sin. Making eyes at someone of the opposite sex? Gateway to sin. Thinking "impure" thoughts about someone else? Thoughtcrime Gateway to sin. Wearing the "wrong" type of clothes? Listening to the "wrong" kind of music? Having the "wrong" sort of values? Enjoying the "wrong" kind of media? All of it was seen as a stepping stone toward being a sinful godless heathen (and to some people it was essentially just as bad).
And it wasn't enough to just avoid BadWrong Behaviours, either. In my ex-community you were expected to express your disapproval of it and be well versed in the theological how's and whys. Does any of that sound familiar?
Purity culture at its core is so much more than "wear this purity ring and pinky promise to Jesus that you'll never have sex until you're married" and if you didn't realise that while you were there you weren't paying attention.
As an ex-christian, this is so wholesome.
I'm tired of giving long-winded explanations for both of these so I made a meme about both it
[image ID: the shaking hands meme. The hand on the left says "christian witches" and the hand on the right says "christian queer people". Where they meet in the middle it says "the Bible is the word of God but it was written down and translated by flawed and biased humans so it's our right and responsibility to spend time with God and discern what we believe His will to be".]
Cirrus' genuine questions for tumblr #1: What do people dislike about Christians?
I think I am going to start a series of posts called "cirrus' genuine questions for tumblr" where I am going to ask tumblr communities about stuff, because I am quite new to tumblr and it is really a whole culture out here.
Anyways...
I have no idea if it's just where I accidentally ended up, but people seem to really not like Christians and people say a bunch of things that I can't recognise from (and here people will start not liking me) the Christians I've met, and I am myself a Christian and actually work at a church. My hypothesis is that tumblr is an American website and Christian culture is just different in the US than it is in Denmark.
So, the question: what is it that people don't like about Christians and why do Christians get so much hate on tumblr?
This is a genuine question, which requires genuine answers, remember, be nice, be respectful, this is, sort of kind of, for research purposes.
Tumblr's hate against Christians
Tw: christianity and religion
So, I've been on tumblr for a little now, and I have experienced a lot of hate towards christianity and christians, and I honestly don't think it's ok, because no other religion gets so much hate here (and not accepting people of different religions is generally not cool). If people said the things they say about christians and christianity about, lets say, Muslims it would be considered islamophobia.
I am not saying that you shouldn't be critical of religion or any other thought or scripture or whatever, just be respectful, engage in an intellectual debate instead of saying "all christians bad" or "I hate all christians" because imagine if you replaced "christians" with "muslims" that would be straight up islamophobia.
And I know a lot of people have religious trauma here, but that is not a reason to hate an entire group of people from one specific religion, because people from a certain religion are not a monolith and not every christian will hurt you.
