Something I feel like people getting into folk magic need to understand, for many people of many backgrounds, is folk magic started as a means of survival. It was struggle magic, and it is still struggle magic.

Where I'm living now and where I'm from, people planted by the signs to ensure their crops wouldn't go bad before harvesting. People used ocean water to soothe joint and muscle pains when they got old. People studied the native plants for medicine and were mindful to only take what was needed. People did little rituals and minded their grannies' words to keep their good luck. If they didn't know how to do something (or couldn't), they went to people who did.

Learning folk magic to reconnect with ancestral traditions from before your time is valid. Learning folk magic to connect with and work with the land is valid. There are many valid reasons to take up folk magic. Still, understand that folk magic is survival, and folk magic is community.

terms like white vs black magic really make me uncomfortable. by whose standards are we measuring what is 'white' witchcraft and what is 'black' witchcraft? societies, who sees all witchcraft as somewhat 'other' anyway? the content of what is being practiced, or where those practices originated from? whether it is socially acceptable to do certain things in the west compared to practices from other parts of the world? what exactly do we mean by this? my practice is neither, and I won't be boxed in by even more made up rules for what is or isn't acceptable.

I think we need to bring local shrines back. Not in the sense of like, a church, but somewhere in a local community where offerings to the spirits, fae, deceased loved ones, can be left. not too dissimilar to community shrines to local spirits in Japan.

thinking of exploring christopaganism, but only for the vietnamese kitchen gods (and maybe ong dia and than tai too idk). i thought maybe i could replace them with st. martha (patron saint of homemakers and cooks) but i don't really feel much of a connection to her tbh. but obviously, i'm not gonna worship them, i'll just ask them to pray for me like they're saints.

how do you feel about people who aren't from the appalachian mountains trying to practice appalachian folk magic?

A tricky question to start off with, I like it! This answer may be a bit ramble-y, and I apologize! Some aspects of AFM are perfectly okay to be practiced anywhere! The concepts, the bible verses, the odd methods of protection and healing...some of the spirits. The only thing I can think of to stop some people is that some ingredients, some items, some spirits or haints to protect from are hard to find outside of Appalachia! Otherwise, as long as you have your heart in the right place, you study up on the region and the history? I say go for it, we need more practioners. Because the old folk? They won't be around forever. But in saying this: I know my opinion isn't everyone's. I know some people who would rage at me, hell, I've been banned from certain groups for saying that I am okay with people learning. If someone refuses to teach you? Honor that, anger-inducing it may feel. The reason some people fight so hard to keep AFM within the mountains is because well...look at us historically. Historically speaking...when outsiders came in? Hell followed. Years of near slave-labor to mining companies, the drug epidemic, crushing our old ways of life and making a good chunk of them illegal? Destroying our land for profit, kicking people off of their land to "preserve" it? Purposefully making us a butt of a joke into some...stupid, inbred, ruthless, drunkard of a people just because we paid less tax on whiskey when we made it ourselves? I could go on and on.

Catholic folk magic tip #6

Some will be practical, some will be magical.  - Research novena’s of your saint(s). So when you work with a saint/work with several saints, it would do you good to understand them through their life. What they stood for. Literally, getting to know someone. And it can be- especially when you’re new to it -uncertain where to start/how to make contact. Novenas can help here. Not only can you see the practical way of petitioning, how their patronage is effective, but it can also give you an idea how to put together a personalized prayer. Perhaps even on how to decorate their shrine.  - And it would be good to collect the novena’s in a book. So you don’t have to search endlessly for them. (just saying!) - Signing the cross over virtually anything; from blessing, to charms, to spell-work, to candles, is never a bad idea. - When buying candles/tea-lights (especially those) pay attention to how long they +/- burn. It usually says it on the box/bag they come in. I like to use the longer burning ones for novena’s, or spell-work that requires a steady source. The shorter ones are good for the same thing, but only shorter of course. It just comes down to preference. - Folklore from your own culture, family and region is usually the best way to work magic. You know it, it knows you, and voila, you are good to go! - Prayer is always an acceptable offering when it comes to ancestors.  - If you can’t over-power someone/something, you need to be smart. And the smart thing is to wait, and observe.  - If you want to clean your windows, and give them some extra cleanliness at the same time, add some holy water to it. This with a blessing for whatever you want it to do. Especially windows where a lot of strangers/passers-by walk by, could benefit from this.  You can find the previous Catholic folk magic tip *here* That’s me for now. Hope you are all well.  - Toverij & Spokerij

Italian folk magic basics

Italian witchcraft, also known as Stregoneria, is a form of traditional witchcraft that has its roots in ancient Italy. Here are some basics of Italian witchcraft:

The practice of Italian witchcraft is often passed down through family traditions, and many practitioners are born into it.

The practice involves working with spirits, ancestors, and deities, and often involves honoring the elements of earth, air, fire, and water.

Italian witchcraft is centered around the idea of "la vita e bella" (life is beautiful), and emphasizes the importance of finding joy and beauty in everyday life.

The use of natural materials, such as herbs, stones, and crystals, is an important part of Italian witchcraft. These materials are often used in spells and rituals, and are believed to have specific properties and energies.

The practice of divination, or seeking guidance from the spiritual realm, is also an important part of Italian witchcraft. This may involve reading tarot cards, using pendulums, or other methods.

The Italian witchcraft tradition places a strong emphasis on the importance of the sacred feminine, and many practitioners honor goddesses such as Diana, Hecate, and Isis.

Some Italian witchcraft traditions also incorporate elements of Catholicism, and may involve working with saints or angels as well as other spiritual beings.

Overall, Italian witchcraft is a deeply rooted and rich tradition that emphasizes connection with nature, spirit, and the sacred feminine. It is a beautiful and powerful practice that continues to inspire and captivate practitioners around the world.

Folk Magic with Saint Peter

“ I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.” (Matthew 16:19)

Folk Magic With Saint Peter

Who is Saint Peter?:

Saint Peter is one of the Holy Apostles alongside Jesus. He is attributed to two books of the New Testament, along with being the Holy founder and first Pope of the Holy Catholic Church.

What can he Help with?:

Saint Peter, holding the keys to heaven, is an intercessor that holds the power given by Our Lord himself to bring spirits to and from the veil.

Thus, we can call upon Saint Peter when we need communicate with our ancestors, or any other spirit. With this key imagery, he can unlock many roads in one’s path, and reveal what’s beyond the veil.

Along with this, we can appreciate his role as leader and teacher. Known as, “the rock” Saint Peter established the church and lead the teachings of the Lord after his Holy death.

We can call upon him in times of instability, wisdom, and strength with The Lord. Even in his agony of denying The Lord thrice, he was given the chance to atone for his actions and bring the Catholic Church into fruition.

To connect:

Pray his Novena

Use orange or white candles

Place Keys by his image

Utilize crossroads and crossroads magic to symbolise the veil

Read his works in the Bible

Unpopular Opinion Time

The doodle you make or the picrew you use, the poorly executed poetry or basic bare bones prayer will ALWAYS be better than AI generated offerings.

I am sick of having my feed flooded with practitioners, pagans and other polytheists using AI. Specifically deities like Brigid should never be offered AI in my opinion, it’s essentially a slap in the face.

AI generated spells aren’t shit, it’s what a computer assumes will work based off of what it can gather from internet trends and research. MAKE IT YOURSELF, ask a human for help anything but AI.

There is no place for Artificial Intelligence in these spaces.
