I feel like Phantom never really had the space or time to develop their quintessence skills as much as other quint ghouls. They know how to gather the energy, and how to expell it, but past that, they don't know anything more complicated.

This is part of the reason that I write them as hurting people when they heal them, because they don't know how to heal soothingly using and channeling the person's own energy.

This is also why, when they lashed out at Mountain, it just slashed him. They didn't know how to properly wield their quintessence into anything different than its pure form. And when they flash-banged Chain and Earth, that was simply them quickly expelling a lot of energy.

And when they twitch when they're nervous and sparks fly? That's when their nervous energy has nowhere to go, and they aren't focusing on keeping it under wraps, so they just release sparks of pure quintessence back into the air.

What do you think the ghouls’ special interests and hyperfixations would be? (I personally want to give the ghouls a dinosaur encyclopedia and watch Rain and Dew hyperfixate on their favourite dinosaurs together.)

OOOh I LOVE that. I definitely have some thoughts. And a few definitely overlap...

Aether: Squishmallows and plushies in general, internet horror, FNAF, animatronics in general (including furbies), mermaids

Rain: marine biology + dabbling in amphibians, fashion (usually 70s vintage), horror video games (Subnautica types, but also just general Silent Hill and Resident Evil fan), classic monster movies

Dew: reptiles (mostly small lizards but also very much loves snakes), horror (but specifically 80s slashers), comic books, horror video games

Swiss: horror (in general), 80s pop (esp underground/more obscure), fashion (combo of pastel goth + 80s retro) + makeup, ornithology but with even more specific interests of birds of prey and carrion eaters

Mountain: plant biology + gardening, reptiles, comic books, movie special effects, high fantasy

Cirrus: vampires, comic books, high fantasy (but ESPECIALLY dragons), classic art (but more artists that leaned into surrealist/horror imagery)

Cumulus: fashion (specifically different flavors of alt) + makeup, doll customization (and dolls in general), flowers and their symbolism, Alice in Wonderland (not just limited to Disney adaptations)

Sunshine: horror and horror adjacent cartoons (Invader Zim but also more "mature" things like Happy Tree Friends), clowns, cats AND dogs, MLP

Ghoul Headcanon: Water ghouls are able to sing like sirens, but use it just as another form of communication, just like frogs croak to each other.

In the pit this was quite common and almost a language of its own among those capable of using it, even without the presence of words. Rain is particularly fond of it because of the ease with which it can express thoughts and emotions without the need to articulate them verbally.

However, the hypnotic effects of the water ghouls' songs when heard by their humans peers were unknown for a long time, which resulted in several deep conversations between Dew, Rain, and Mist being interrupted by some random sibling who was accidentally charmed by the melody and now he needs to be saved because they can't swim.

I don't ACTUALLY know if their robes were ever red, some say it's a lighting trick but as a technician myself it's kinda hard to make black look genuinely red ?? Idk I haven't been at the job long enough to know that, ANYWAYS. The photos where they look red is what inspired this HC

There's this video game I played called brütal legend, super cool I've played it so many times over the years (I'm trying to keep this a short post but I already failed)

my headcanon being Aceflux/AceSpec Kaneki and many of my characters being Aromantic or Asexual or on the A-Spectrum it's very helpful and scratches my brian well <3

How does Asexuality affect a ghouls' heat? Like if they are on the AceSpec does heat affect them at all?

Do they just not go through it at all, are the symptoms/affects not sexually but more romantically or sensually?

Do AceSpec Ghouls/Half-Ghouls exist/is it it possible for one to be on the AceSpec?

Acespec ghouls!

Just like humans, there are a variety of ways ghouls experience attraction, and the lack of it is no different. There are just as many ace and aro ghouls as humans

Unfortunately, they have some more things to deal with than humans do. Namely heat cycles and pheromones. They get effected by these same as anyone else because, unlike attraction, these are purely biological. And it is miserable. Heats are bad enough for allo ghouls, but ace ghouls have a whole other layer of shittiness. Their bodies respond the same, and some ace ghouls who aren’t sex repulsed will even have partnerships agreed on with friends for it just to appease the instincts, but those who don’t want that generally deal with it alone

For the most part though, aroace ghouls are accepted without issue. There’s some confusion with other ghouls as is to be expected, many thinking that they’re simply So Good At Defending Territory That They Aren’t Even Letting A Mate In, but there isn’t the same culture of marriage and romance that makes it an issue as it does with humans

In ghoul culture, relationships are less strict and defined. It’s common for ghouls to be polyamorous or not in relationships at all, and there are a lot of undefined dynamics that don’t fit into the human definition of a partnership. There are aro and ace ghouls who have romantic or sexual relationships with one or multiple partners, as well as some who would prefer neither. Since allo ghouls have plenty of relationships like these, it’s not uncommon for ghouls to go their whole life without being fully aware they’re ace or aro because the types of relationships they want or don’t want are considered completely normal

I like the idea of Kakuja/Half-Kakuja play fighting.

This entire idea happened because of a cute dream of Centipede and T-Owl getting caught play fighting on camera or something.

Headcanon: Agender/Genderfluid, they/them and it/its but he/him is okay sometimes, she/her is good, more often, as well.

(This is mostly a 'Sasako needs more attention' thing, cause they kinda just glazed over how good Haise was at it. So I have a feeling they crossdressed/dressed femininely prior to that) []

Dream goes as this:

Someone is watching through a camera or something.

Centipede is sitting on top of a tower of some kind, it has a large square and flat top and it's all white. The towers isn't outside, it's inside of like a circle of some kind. There are other towers that line the walls just like it, in a circle, with a spiral staircase in the center with walkways leading to the square towers.

(I think this might be Coaclea, but I'm unsure; I've only seen the anime and that was 2-4 years ago.)

Their tails/rinkaku kakuja are kinda sprawled out behind them. They are clearly looking down at something, watching.

When T-Owl comes up over the edge behind them, very sneakily. He wanders close enough to Centipede finally, before gently (though at the beginning they didn't know that) biting one of their tails, making a noise similar to a puppy trying to play.

Centipede flips around, clearly caught off-guard, while hopping up into a mildly defensive pose. They are crouched down, on all fours, watching T-Owl.

T-Owl chirps/sneezes.

Centipede does it back, before tackling T-Owl.

They duke it out in a similar way to both cats and dogs. Occasionally bitting each other, not aggressively or sexually but playfully.

Just nipping at each other.

Just playing together. The CCG won't admit this.

Until, accidentally, T-Owl bites them too hard and ends up actually hurting them. While it heals almost instantly, Centipede still yipes and leaps away from T-Owl.

T-Owl, recognizing what he did, purrs as he gets closer to Centipede. To any outsider this would look like T-Owl is trying to lure them into a false sense of security, but to other ghouls/half-ghouls he's clearly apologizing. Saying "I'm so sorry, I didn't mean to." purely by action.

T-Owl gets closer to them before nuzzling into their jaw with his beak, quietly chirping to them until they chirp back. Both recognizing his apology and their exception of that apology.

Centipede purrs.

T-Owl purrs.

They just sit there for a minute, calming each other down. Just affectionately chewing on each other. (Like dogs and T-Rexes, called craniofacial biting)

-Until an incredibly high-pitched and loud alarm goes off and spooks them both.

Ghoul Worldbuilding Headcanons:

Ghoul kitchens are always clean. Very few ghouls actually cook to begin with, which makes most of their kitchen indefinitely clean. And all of them can’t afford to leave evidence of their meals, so they clean up immediately.

Because of this, ghouls are commonly known as very tidy people among their human friends.

Koalas and Panda Bears are common favorite animals (or at least, animals of heavy interest) among ghouls for the fact that they also live on a single food source (albeit both plants — eucalyptus and bamboo)

Carnivorous animals that get demonized as “eating machines” like Sharks are also common favorite animals / animals of interest

Because of this, a lot of ghouls take interest in animals and want to go into a work field of either studying or working with animals. (If you can't work against the demonization of your own species, might as well work on helping other species!)

Given that Hide can keep Cain’s mouth shut in the novels to make him swallow human food, what if ghouls are like crocodiles and alligators? Incredible bite strength, but the muscle that opens their mouths is really weak.

Acting human requires a lot of suppression, far beyond what canon covers. Think about it: They have to ignore the scents they smell, everything they overhear, keep their strength and agility in check, avoid dangerous objects because they can't be harmed by it. And they have to guess and estimate all these limits, because they can't just ask. They even have to play dumb and fearful about knowledge of their own species, as public knowledge on ghouls and even the CCG is very low.

And it requires a lot of supplementation, too. They have to catch up on the importance of food in human culture, from favorite foods to grocery shopping. And be able to recognize the variety of human food, and pay attention to and prepared for common eating times. They've probably never experienced a true human restaurant besides coffee shops. They also have to make up family history since most ghouls are orphans, and stick to a single believable backstory.

Given that the CCG take ghoul bodies after killing them and turn them into quinques, having a body at all is a big deal amongst ghouls, and in recent history makes their death ceremonies not entirely unlike humans'

Having a real disconnect when it comes to the blood and gore side of horror. They can tell its meant to be terrifying and disgusting, but it gives them the complete opposite reaction. Which could either be really fun and enjoyable, or the source of alienation and guilt, depending on the ghoul

Whether its through chemosignals or simply overhearing heartbeats, ghouls can sense fear

(And lying too, probably)

If they can sense chemosignals, then that would make communicating through masks easier for them, as they don't need to read each other's expressions to tell emotions

Cats don't just purr from contentment, but also often purr when stressed, and there's a theory that cat purring aids in healing, which feels really ripe for worldbuilding considering that ghouls have regeneration. Maybe they go hand-in-hand — purring whenever their regeneration kicks in, or maybe they tend to purr when their regeneration gives out — instinctually using a more primative form of healing

(The theory also says that cat purring can lower stress and aid healing in humans too, so consider that for your ghoul x human ships! It wouldn't be an enhanced form of healing for humans, but it would still be comforting and have minor healing properties like the cat purring theory!)

Ghouls' eyes glow. Their kakugan glowing is pretty accepted as canon, but what if even their "normal" eyes glow too?

(Examples of :re Donato because I thought it was cool)

Also bonus headcanon for this specific scene: Donato really likes to sit in the dark and let his eyes glow creepily, just another fun little way to freak out cochlea's doves. But they quickly caught on to this and started keep the lights on. As Donato's friend, Haise's the only one who lets him sit in the dark during interrogations anymore. Enrichment :)

Hideyoshi Headcanon!

This is about his face so if you dislike/'re sensitive to

• mild discussions of gore (consensual, for person it happens to)

• discussion of disabilities. (Deafness/Hard of Hearing)

• any pronouns Hideyoshi (he/them, for the most part)

• gender neutral pronouns for Kaneki (they/them)

I headcanon that Mukade (were separating Mu and Kane because they seam to act incredibly different) had Kane present enough that they couldn't hurt Hide further than they did.

The Injury impacts their ability to hear and speak, however their hearing is more impacted. They have a cochlear implant to hear, as a result of how bad their hearing is and will become.

The tendons in their neck experience nerve and muscle spasms. They were at one point prescribed medication for this. Have since stopped taking them while on the run from the government.

The ghoul, known as Mukade, ate far enough too expose some lung tissue and ribs. Victim, known as Hideyoshi, most likely needs a skin graph.

Thin layer of tissue covers most of the open wounds by now; Including most of their lungs and neck.

I headcanon that:

Hide's Bio-Father has genetic progressive hearing loss; which Hide, intern, inherits.

One of Hide's Dads (pl) is deaf. (90-100% hearing loss)

One of his dad's and himself being deaf would also impact the way he views society.

He'd know what it's like to be discriminated against with being queer/having queer parents, being disabled, and neurodivergent so therefore he'd relate to ghouls being unfairly discriminated against because of something completely out of your control.

I agree that ghouls/half-ghouls/the like have sharp teeth, half-humans (Arima, etc.) would have duller teeth than full ghouls.

I think half-ghouls however would have sharper teeth though, as they are more unstable than full ghouls so they would be more prone to mutations!

I also think that Kakuja/Half-Kakuja would have sharper teeth as well due to, again, being prone to mutations.

You can see it in these ss of Yamori/Jason (anime)

He has sharp teeth going past just his canines.

You can't see it in kaneki when they're Kuroneki/ black haired or just after they're tortured (anime)

However you can see it later, when they're a Half-Kakuja (anime)

nd that got me thinking about how Haise and #240 aren't shown with pointy teeth (manga)

Maybe more half-ghouls/half-humans work at the CCG then we know of, maybe even they themselves (half-humans) know, maybe they had their teeth filed so they would blend in more. Maybe this happened to all the Quinx after they became Quinx or maybe just to Urie after he became a Half-Kakuja. (Because idk if he became a full Kakuja later in the manga/anime)

But, you know, that's just a headcanon. <3
