hmm. there was a beat as toga considered what spinner had to say. it’s true, he wasn’t as tall as some of the others. but he was taller than her and also willing to let her up on his back, so that was good enough for her.  “ ooh, thanks spinner!! “  she scrambled in her excitement to get on his back, attempting to get onto his shoulders for maximum height. 

“ let’s go see if i’m tall enough to stab dabi in the face! “

“ izuku! “  she’s relieved to see him, the fight isn’t going well at all and in all honesty, himiko thinks the smart thing to do would be to cut their losses and run while they can. they’d always get another opportunity, but ultimately it isn’t her call, and she doesn’t want to leave without any of them.  “ have you seen the others yet? “  She can tell that he’s looking her over and while it’s not out of place for her to be covered in blood, this was more than usual, and this time some of it did belong to her, the bruises and blood on her person joined by a deep cut on her thigh, dripping blood down her leg as she limped over to izuku. 

“ hey, i’m alright, don’t worry. are you okay? “

she’s not used to this, for as much as she insists that people are her friends, himiko knows that most people don’t actually care for her like she does for them. but the league had been different, twice had been different. losing big sis had been hard enough, but twice had helped her through that, he’d saved her life and she couldn’t even be sure that he’d known how grateful she was, how much she loved him.  “ but what if i lose you or one of the others? “  her voice comes out barely louder than a whisper, and she wishes that she could dig out this emptiness inside her, carve it out with her knife and make someone else deal with it instead.  “ i want to hurt them too. i want to kill them all before they can make me lose anyone else. i want jin back. “

          “hey….” rare moments of softness ,  allowed only for each other ;  shuichi understands perfectly what toga is feeling. but he still wishes he could do… something. “i get it.” he sits, chin in his hands. “i’m not…” he’s never been the best at comfort ,  and he finds himself at a loss for words now. “i don’t think twice would want you to stop being…” he gestures vaguely. “most people in this world are going to hurt you ,  no matter what you do. but if you shut out the people who care, you’ll only end up hurting yourself.”

Himiko hasn’t fully woken as she wanders out in search for water, but as soon as she sees Jin, she can tell that he isn’t having a good night by the slump of the shoulders in his familiar silhouette. It also isn’t hard to guess that it’s likely his mind pulling him in about ten different directions that is keeping him up. It makes her sad to think that he has to deal with his own mind keeping him from rest along with everything else they deal with. 

“Why? Do I not look pretty enough?” She asked with a pout, dropping onto the couch next to him to rest her head against his shoulder as she reached to take his free hand in her own. After a moment she moves to look up at him. 

“I can get your mask if you need it. Or when I can’t sleep I like to think about my favorite people and what we can all do once we’re free from heroes and everyone keeping us from being happy.”

He didn’t expect to hear her voice in the middle night, his gaze moving from the open window he was looking out of as he brought his cigarette up to his lips, inhaling and exhaling slowly. It was a rough night—someone his mind was so restless and he would argue with himself in order to get another voice to stop—or he’d be so stressed out that sleeping felt like a chore.

Sometimes, life was hard. But the people here, the people like her, made it better. With a light motion of his head, Jin offered for her to sit with him.

“Rough night I guess. Wait, shouldn’t you be getting your beauty sleep!?”

toga has seen the news, the whole league has by now. there was a lot of grumbling, heroes saving the day and patting themselves on the back, yet again. but it’s different with hawks, because Hawks is one of them, he understands that hero society is fucked. when he saves a person it’s not for the bragging rights or the publicity, it’s to help. 

there’s also a cost to helping people, especially on this type of scale. she wasn’t surprised to see his wings so sparse and stubby, but it’s always so sad looking, and worse it makes hawks sad too. she can’t imagine what she’d to if her quirk had more of a hard limit like his did, it would probably make her upset too. so she makes them both some smoothies, and holds one out in front of his gaze, making him look at her before she speaks, he might have been too zoned out to hear her otherwise.

the rescue itself had been on the news. plenty of heroes were involved and thanks to their efforts? everyone is safe. everyone is well. or at least … for the most part.

a lot of his feathers had been used up in the whole ordeal and he’s done well to keep on a cheerful face while around others — but for a moment? he stops by a window and stares out, obviously focused on the sky. he’s grounded, for at least two days. and maybe he’s sulking about it.
