Eponine’s trauma parallels Javert’s, the way that Cosette’s trauma parallels Jean Valjean’s. Eponine is (like Javert) the child of criminals who turns against her parents to defend bourgeois society, the way Cosette (like Valjean) lived in dire poverty and was a ‘prisoner’ threatened with a whip. But being a cop has made Javert unable to care about people from his class-- so Eponine is never a child he can help, she’s just a criminal he can punish. Javert fails to save “his Cosette....” because he never even tried. He sees Eponine’s corpse at the barricade and recognizes her-- he’s one of the few people in the novel who ever recognizes her!-- but he feels nothing.
