Here To Help - Spencer Reid

Part 1

Spencer x Reader

Summary: A case hits home for a member of the BAU team and none of the others know why or how to help.

Reaching out you took the coffee that the woman had made up for you. ‘Thank you’ You smiled at her and she nodded. Spencer groaned from beside you. ‘Why do they always have yours finished first’ You giggled and reached out patting his shoulder. ‘They like me better’ He just rolled his eyes at you but smiled after when you began to laugh.

This was a morning routine for you and Spencer, you would both meet up at this little coffee shop which was about a five minute walk from your house to get your morning coffee and you and him would take the train to work together. The team of course knew something was up between you two, whatever it was it was something more than the friendship you two portrayed. You certainly felt something for the genius, but it was forbidden between co-workers.

You watched Spencer as his order was called out and he made his way to the counter to pick it up. A smile played on your lips as you watched him interact awkwardly with the woman who reached out and touched his arm with a smile. Spencer was smart enough to know she was flirting, just not as well versed with people to know how to say no, even though you had told him almost twenty times.

He turned hastily to you readjusting his bag a small blush on his cheeks. ‘What did she say today goodlooking?’ You chuckled using the woman’s nickname for the genius. That made him blush even harder. ‘Said she’d like to see me by here more often, perhaps when she wasn’t working’ You let out a stark laugh at that and reached out. you threaded your hand through Spencer’s bent one and gripped his elbow. ‘Oh, my genius. Forever the chick magnet’ You giggled when he gave you an unimpressed look before opening the door for you both.

You sat next to Spencer on the train as you read over a book he had recommended. It was interesting, sure, just not something you normally read. But Spencer had been so excited when he had brought it to work one day and handed it to you telling you that it was one of the best books he had read in a while and he thought you would like it. So you were reading it. But unfortunately for you this morning you couldn’t concentrate on it.

Snapping the book closed you turned in your seat. Your hand immediately found Spencer’s knee. ‘Speak’ You ordered softly and he looked up at you his eyebrows furrowed. He sighed. ‘She’s been trying to get a date with me for a month’ He muttered. ‘Why? I’m just another customer who comes into the café, I thought it was her personality but she doesn’t act that way with any other men’ You almost rolled your eyes at him. ‘Well, Spence, maybe she just has good taste in men. A genius who works for the FBI, carries a gun, and is super kind, sweet, loyal. Incredibly tall and very handsome’ you shrugged. ‘What’s not to like boy wonder?’ You chuckled

Even though you were actually the same age as Spencer, Garcia’s name for him had rubbed off on you. Spencer sat watching you his lips slightly parted and his eyes focused solely on you. ‘What?’ You raised an eyebrow with a soft smile. ‘Is that really how you see me?’ He asked softly blinking. You just shrugged. ‘Well, among other things, yeah, that’s just a few’ You tucked your bottom lip between your teeth as Spencer continued to look at you.

Just as you were about to ask him why he was still looking at you like that the train began to slow down. ‘This is our stop’ You gathered your things and stood. ‘Come on genius’ You smiled down at him and he blinked coming out of whatever state he was in to smile, really widely, back up at you before handing you your coffee he ha been holding so you could read.

It was paperwork day, something you hated, you never did like writing up things, which was odd since you wanted to be a writer when you were younger. But you guessed that was different, reports were different from novels, and it was certainly different when it was fiction. Although all fiction had some truth doesn’t it?

You jumped slightly when the phone on your desk rang, reaching out you didn’t even look up from what you were reading. ‘SSA Y/l/n, FBI’ You said in a monotone you eyes still scanning the paper. ‘Agent?’ A rough voice came from the other end of the phone and your head shot up your eyes widening. ‘Officer Grenly?’ You questioned and heard a sigh. ‘Yes Ma’am, that’s me’ You dropped your pen your fingers reaching up to massage your temple.

Spencer looked up at you and raised his eyebrows, you just turned away from him slightly not wanting to speak right now. But you were met by the curious gazes of both Emily And Derek too. ‘It happened didn’t it?’ You breathed. There was a silence on the other end while your foot began to tap against the floor beneath you. ‘Family of five attacked in their home, found about an hour ago, yeah, it’s happening’ You felt your heart drop and you certainly knew your face did by the scraping chair on the other side of the desking unit.

You let out a long breath. ‘Same MO?’ You cleared your throat. ‘Exactly the same, I thought I should call you first, seeing as you took the time to come all the way out here a few years ago’ You felt a hand on your shoulder and you looked up to see Spencer looking down at you. His long fingers squeezed your shoulder and he raised his eyebrow. You just shook your head. ‘Alright, if you could e-mail that case details to Aaron Hotchner. I can review it’ You heard him begin to type from the other end of the phone. ‘Got it, I’ll be seeing you soon Agent Y/l/n’ You nodded.

You noticed that all of the team was looking at you now, Derek leaning back in his chair his arms folded, Emily had put her pen down and giving you a ‘you better explain’ look. Spencer just looked worried, his fingers were firmly massaging your shoulder the way he knew would relax you, the way he had done many times before. ‘I’ll see you soon’ You placed the phone back down hanging up. ‘Something you wana tell us?’ Derek said the instant it was down. ‘Nop’ You bent down opening the bottom drawer of your desk, you shifted a few things. ‘Y/n’ Spencer’s soft voice came from right beside you as he crouched down beside you.

He reached out laying his hand on your arm his thumb rubbing soft lines through the fabric of your thin shirt. Usually the gesture would make you shiver and the closeness of his face would usually make your throat tighten for a second, but not now. Your fingers found the false bottom in the desk and you pulled it up. Out of the corner of your eye you seen Spencer’s eyes widen and his eyebrows shoot up. ‘A false bottom?’ He choked out as you pulled out the large file below it. ‘What’s so important it needs a false bottom?’ He questioned.

His thumb stopped moving and his fingers tightened on your arm. Derek leaned forwards in his chair and Emily stood. You managed to get free of his grasp. ‘You’ll see’ You muttered spinning your chair enough to stand up and move around him. ‘Y/n’ He stood quickly and planted his hand on your shoulder and spun you back to him. ‘You’re worrying me’ He came straight out with it.

It wasn’t unusual for Spencer to tell you right out his feelings or to tell you what was on his mind, in fact it was very common between you two, he had even told you about his meetings and his addiction. But he never did it straight out in front of the team, which is why Derek and Emily’s attention diverted to him a surprised look on both of their faces. ‘You’ll know I promise, just, I need to-’ You spun away from him again clutching the file to your chest.

But he wasn’t giving up so easily and started after you. ‘y/n wi-’ you spun a glare on your face. ‘Spencer’ You snapped and with that you had the team’s attention again. Spencer stopped in his traces, you had always been patient with him, with all of them, you had never snapped or even sounded slightly exasperated with any of them. His mouth opened a little his eyes blinking and wide. ‘Just give me a few minutes to get this together and then you’ll see, please, this is time sensitive With that you spun leaving them there.

Derek and Emily looked at each other eyebrows furrows and concern flashing in their eyes. You had always been so kind to Spencer, you were the only one who didn’t cut him off when he rambled, you didn’t get annoyed sometimes at how much he knew, or how he could beat you so easily. You were always sweet to him, no matter what. It was one of the reasons they believed that the two of you belonged with each other, you were totally taken with Spencer Reid.

Yet here you were, he had only asked you a small question, stating his worry an you snapped at him, no explanation nothing. Just snapped and walked away. You had always taken time for Spencer, you would always explain to him the things he never got when the others just chuckled and walked away, but here you were. Walking away. Derek patted Spencer’s shoulder as they watched you stride towards the offices. ‘She’ll come round man’ He reassured his friend seeing his hurt expression.

Spencer looked up at him. ‘She had a false bottom Derek, whatever is in that file is important, look at how she’s holding it’ They’re eyes fell on you as you stopped outside Hotch’s door. They watched as you glanced down at the file in your hands before taking a deep breath and letting it out.

Then you raised your hand and knocked on the door before pushing it open. ‘Hotch’ You were inside the office before he had even looked up from his desk let alone invited you in. ‘I have something for you to look at’ You strode to his desk before gently laying the file down over what he was doing so he couldn’t ignore it. He looked between you and the file. ‘What is this?’ He asked laying down his pen straightening in his chair. ‘A case we’re going to work’ You told him

He raised an eyebrow and leaned back. ‘You don’t decide on what cases we work Y/n, th-’ You reached forwards and opened the file planting a finger on it. ‘I do with this one Hotch, this team is working this case’ You interrupted using a voice that you never used with Hotch before, it was one that left no room for discussion. Although this was Aaron Hotchner and he was going to fight back.

But just before he did a soft bing came from his computer and you looked at it. ‘Open it’ You told him. He narrowed his eyes but did as you said. Normally Hotch would never stand for this, one of his team barging into his office ranting orders at him but this was different, you were different. He may expect this from the rest of the team but not you, you were always someone who followed the rules, unless they needed to be broken, and only unless you were certain they needed to be broken. This was out of character.

You were by far the least aggressive on the team, when it came to your teammates you were sweet and kind, never letting any kind of frustration out. Even with unsubs you weren’t aggressive, you did what needed to get the job done, you never had outbursts, not like the rest of the team, and if a case got under your skin you always hid it until after. Until you were on the plane and you would sit away from the rest of them playing some kind of game on your phone that caused a frown on your face. Until Spencer would go sit with you and convince you to sleep, which you would try fight but would eventually end up with your head on his lap or shoulder, the frown still etched onto your features. Then when the plane landed you would go to the range and shoot or go to the gym and punch something. But you never allowed it to interfere with what needed to be done.

So Hotch opened his e’mail seeing a file that needed to be opened. The second he opened it he was met by crime scene photo’s, from a office he didn’t know. ‘Those were taken no less than an hour ago, they’re connected to these murders’ You told him your finger tapping the file. ‘They’re the last victim of a serial killer who has been working for over twenty years, and he has two more to kill. Unless we catch him’ That caught Hotch You seen his back straighten and he turned picking up the file.

He scanned the pages turning them. ‘How did you find this?’ He asked not looking up. ‘It found me, I knew one of the families and I’ve been keeping tabs on it ever since’ You explained standing back crossing your arms. His eyes stopped for a second. ‘These dates, two years ago’ He looked up at you and your back straightened slightly. ‘You took these dates off for holiday time’ You nodded. He flicked over the age. ‘And there is a profile in here already even though the BAU didn’t work this case, and it’s by you’ He closed the file and put it down on his desk. ‘I assisted last time, although I was called before the last family was killed so I only got the profile not the unsub. And it was off the books’ He nodded staring at you, and you knew he was studying you.

For a second it was silent. ‘Your personal connection with this case will not get in the way?’ You shook your head. ‘No sir, I promise,if anything it will only make me more invested in catching this guy’ He nodded slowly. ‘I’ll gather the team, you can present them with the case in 10′ He pushed his chair back standing. You nodded and picked up the file pulling it to your chest again as he gave you a nod walking out of his office.

You took in a deep breath before letting out a long breath. This was going to be a hard case.
