Tropes Vs Women - Tumblr Posts
Oh, God! This is an extremely disturbing trend for sure! I never even knew how bad it was because I haven't played any of these games. I'm pretty glad now that I didn't support them by purchasing any! The awful game material aside, however, this is another excellent episode!
In this episode we explore the Women as Background Decoration trope which is the subset of largely insignificant non-playable female characters whose sexuality or victimhood is exploited as a way to infuse edgy, gritty or racy flavoring into game worlds. These sexually objectified female bodies are designed to function as environmental texture while titillating presumed straight male players. Sometimes they’re created to be glorified furniture but they are frequently programmed as minimally interactive sex objects to be used and abused.

Even if the game developers have provided other options, that still doesn't at all excuse the fact that there are sexualized female objects that a player can use as instruments or commodities and then kill off. If they're there, that's enough of an offence!

Okay, thanks for the correction! :) I've been thinking about trying out the series and this made me a bit (or a lot) iffy about buying. If you can't brutalize them, that's a relief, I guess...

To be fair, that's not Anita's fault. It's the viewer's because it's so easy to just lump the games together when you see example after example of similar scenarios, especially if you don't pay particular attention what exactly is going on in each clip. The mind has a way of categorizing info in a way that doesn't always allow you to recall the details. Now having watched that part of the video again, I don't think AC was misrepresented. I guess the overall violence in the final part just left a big impression on me but the info in each segment seemed correct as far as I could tell.

Exactly! And that is what gets me... When setting out to prove something, of course you're going to find evidence focusing on the phenomenon you're dealing with! Anita Sarkeesian's series isn't about tropes and gender in general, it's about women, so it is self explainatory that she would narrow down the discussion to fit her topic. This is not cherrypicking, it's basic argumentation and I find it astounding that these men are furious that a person is staying on topic. The real problem, it seems, is that they don't like the topic. It's like they've turned their "not all men" into "not all games" and, once again, it's not helping the discourse.

I get so many emails like this I could publish a coffee table book full of them.

It’s especially amusing that this misogyny laced email is unironically signed “See you soon m’lady. *tips fedora*”

Why are they always hanging by their wrists? Isn't that a form of torture? Jesus! It's like adding insult to injury, or rather, injury to insult. It takes a special kind of indifference to ignore how much that shit would actually hurt.
