i accidentally spoiled the last season for myself because i read a canon compliant fanfic, but the stuff in there with the neo-nazis and the captivity just sounded batshit crazy. i didn’t even consider the possibility it was canon

sorry but whenever i see the line “walter sold jesse to neo-nazis” theres always a moment of ‘What kinda fanfic you guys even writing’ i have to go through

walter doesn’t become a worse man over the course of brba. he just gets better at lying to himself about it. he always has that streak of cruelty in him - that part of him that keeps itself afloat by putting others down. we see it in season one in how he blackmails and verbally abuses jesse, how he treats that failing student, when he explodes the rich man’s car, when he beats up walt jr’s bullies. some of these things may have been justified - but through all of them we see walt being driven, energized, by those rushes of power, of cruelty. they may be justified, but that’s not why he did it. that’s just why he tells himself he did it, once it’s done. he was always driven by that rush of power, of cruelty, since day one.

and as time goes on we see how he gets better at these little excuses. he indulges himself more and more, bit by bit. he excuses his behavior towards his wife, his son, to jesse, to hank. walt uses jesse as a kind of life-raft, to keep his excuses and his yearning for power afloat. jesse is malleable, manipulatable, controllable. as the show’s body count rises walt tells jesse it’s alright, tells jesse it was all necessary, that they did what they had to do. he berates jesse to boost his own ego, uses jesse to keep himself in control, keeps jesse in an agonizing subordinate position all through the show, so he always has someone to keep him on top. to give him the power, the ego, the reassurance, the forgiveness that he needs. he isolates jesse, guilts jesse, shames jesse, and then when jesse breaks and does what walt wants - such as killing gale - he showers jesse with assurances, reminders that it’s okay. they did what they had to. there was no other choice.

and even as jesse forgives walt, over and over, buying walt’s excuses and manipulation, jesse can’t quite forgive himself. part of him understands it’s all bullshit. we see jesse try to fight it, without realizing who he’s fighting - screaming at the narcotics anonymous meeting, asking why? why does he, who killed a man, get to move on, say it means nothing, claim it was justified? by season 4, he’s accepted that it’s bullshit. he knows he’s a bad guy. he doesn’t do what walt does - chase himself in circles excusing, explaining, what he’s done. and so the rift between them - despite walt’s best efforts - starts to grow.

by the end of the show, walt doesn’t even need an excuse: walt is the excuse. he believes he’s the exception; the one who’s so smart, so exceptional, so special that whatever it takes to get his way is simply necessary. walter and heisenberg aren’t separate people, not really - it was all walter, right from the start - but walter likes to believe that they are; because heisenberg is special. heisenberg deserves better, so he should get better, no matter whose lives are at stake. it’s the classic case of a white man born and bred to believe he’s above all consequences.

so “heisenberg” isn’t a different person, not really. walt doesn’t turn into someone different over the course of the show. he is the same man, from the start to the end - an angry, bitter old man with an extraordinary capacity for cruelty.

I love the 4 days out episode so much and from a fandom standpoint it's so funny. Like, first of all, "did you just bring a methlab to the airport?" Then they're shacked up in the RV together for four days, taking shifts cooking meth. Walt teases Jesse about him only bringing junk food. He even tries a funyun and hates it. They watch the sunset and pee side by side for whatever reason. When they're done with cooking Jesse suggests they treat themselves to a motel room and a shower and a bed (singular) so Walt has to tell him to get "separate rooms". Then they get stranded and bicker like an old married couple. It's cold af in the night. Walt has to wear Jesse's clothes and he looks absolutely ridiculous. They don't showcase the night but it's a perfect scenario for huddling for warmth. They spend the next day in various states of despair and thinking about dying - Walt coughs up blood. And when all hope is lost we get a scene which the show creator lovingly refers to as a "post-coital scene". It mirrors Walt being in bed with his wife earlier in the same episode. Jesse comes up with the idea that saves their asses and doesn't even realize it. He also says "aaaah, wire", and that moment alone is emmy worthy. And just like that they fix it and drive off to live happily ever after or whatever (except there's still that motel they have to get to).

All in all 10/10 episode and a fandom staple with untapped potential.

Broke: Walter White became Heisenberg when [insert specific scene of choice]

Woke: Walter White was always Heisenberg deep down

Bespoke: Walter White never became Heisenberg because, while the alias symbolically stands for his moral decline within the story, to Walter himself Heisenberg was an unattainable personification of what he considered aspirational masculinity. Traditional patriarchal ideas about manhood are ludicrously divorced from how real people function: In the world of a "Heisenberg", women and children are reduced to near property, to an extension of the self and a source of ego growth, while other men are reduced to competitors in an imagined hierarchy. A "Heisenberg" is invincible. He is always right, always respected, and always comes out on top eventually. In order to believe in the illusion that a "Heisenberg" can exist in the real world, can be embodied by oneself, a man must let his compassion and vulnerability be eclipsed by the need to win against a perceived omnipotent threat of being emasculated - Effectively isolating himself from healthy connections and coping methods and leaving him with only that very struggle. Walter's downfall at the end of the series serves as a wake-up call that reveals to him, and reinforces to the audience, that he has been living in a male power fantasy which was bound from day one to shatter eventually.

smash or pass but it‘s pretty much the entire BrBa cast and i‘m adding my weird headcanons (queer edition)

please don’t take this too seriously, these are my preferences and most of the headcanons are obviously jokes. 18+ please!!

Walter White: hell nooo he worked with n*zis and wears those tighty whities. definitely needs pills to get it up

Saul Goodman: smash, i feel like he‘d call me mommy. minus points bc he‘d make dad jokes during it.

Jesse Pinkman: 1000% SMASH HES SO FINE!! would smoke in bed with me after. i feel like he has piercings down there too, don’t ask why. definitely whimpers

Skyler White: had to think abt it a little but i‘d smash, misunderstood queen. lots of aftercare too

Hank Schrader: hard pass. he‘s a cop and has the personality of a paper bag.

Gus Fring: sure! more of a hookup though because i can’t imagine him being kind and gentle. he‘d say no cuz he‘s gay fr

Mike Ehrmantraut: probably not what you guys wanna hear, but smash. call it a guilty pleasure, ik that guy has experience. would focus on my needs first. i‘d do it in his car

Jane Margolis: yes omg are you kidding?! her style is everything and she’s genuinely so hot, i‘d gay panic being in the same room as her. definitely uses toys

Walter Jr: pass, too young for me and i don’t find him that attractive

Marie Schrader: smash! she‘s genuinely so sweet and pretty, perfect balance. hank didn’t deserve her

Todd, Jack and co: hardest pass, i don’t think i have to explain why. would go on about how women don’t deserve rights when they’re on top of me

Tuco Salamanca: no, he scares me. probably into knife play or some weird shit

Skinny Pete: yes! he‘s an acquired taste guys

Badger: probably? this is a hard one, smash if i got paid like 50 bucks. for free if it‘s with pete. but i‘d definitely go on a date with him

Steven Gomez: pass bc he‘s a cop. if i had to choose between him or hank i‘d choose him any day tho

Hector Salamanca: pass, no disrespect. rip Mark

Lydia Rodarte-Quayle: i‘m anxious 24/7 so her nervous attitude would make it impossible for me to enjoy it. she‘d accidentally insult me during it in some way

Gale Boetticher: smash because i love his personality. he‘s a keeper, husband material. lasts 2 minutes :(

Combo Ortega: pass i like him but not like that fr

Ted Beneke: hard pass. wouldn’t shut up abt his stupid company for five minutes. he makes really weird sounds during it and asks if you came right after (u didn’t)

Eyebrow Guy: i like hair but not like that

Andrea Cantillo: yesss baby bring it on. easily one of the pretties characters. sadly her personality wasn’t shaped out well in the show

Gretchen Schwartz: i feel like she‘s too smart for me don’t ask why. would absolutely reject me

Elliot Schwartz: maybe if he wears a hat to hide those big ass ears. i‘d do it if he paid me tho

Wendy (blonde meth head): seems very sweet and i love her style but i‘m a fan of hygiene and her teeth are not it

Carmen Molina (principal): yeah i guess, she‘s pretty

Huell & Kuby: pass bc they‘re silly little guys. only come package deal

Donald Margolis: sad guy but seems very sweet. smash? he cries when he finishes

Salamanca Twins: probably never had sex ed, lots of uncomfortable stares… pass

Krazy-8: i don’t remember much of him but going off looks, smash

Jesses Therapy Group Leader: pass, he has those crazy killer eyes

hope you enjoyed! :D

it sucks that so many people who talk about how Jesse is both a replacement for Walt's son and wife thematically end up turning it into a shipping thing

because I genuinely think it's an interesting thing to talk about and it is actually true, I think it ties into how Walt doesn't see other people as people but more as objects for him to own that can serve any role that he wants, and Jesse being thematically associated with women in this dynamic to an extent is one of the things that makes me consider Jesse woman-coded and makes interpreting her as transfem a relevant analysis

but seeing people getting so excited about how Walt "needs" Jesse as that replacement for his whole family is just like... beyond se1 and se2 where Walt needs Jesse for distribution- the thing he "needs" Jesse for is so he has someone to abuse and exert his power over who shows less resistance than Skyler does, and I dunno maybe it's my "emotionally Jesse and the rest of these characters register as real people" autism of the brain but even from a more toxic relationship standpoint I don't really get whats so exciting about their dynamic as an actual ship unless you're taking some major liberties with your interpretation of Walt

A meeting at the DEA

 Hank: Okay, who’s Heisenberg?

Some guy: Maybe it’s the guy who wears black constantly, has a perpetual death glare, expressed interest in the meth trade out of nowhere, is a genius chemist, has been acting secretive ever since he started wearing the aforementioned black, is one of the only people with access to the chemistry backroom from which equipment was stolen for meth, showed signs of having a second cellphone, and is the only person nerdy enough to choose “Heisenberg” as a criminal alias?

 Hank: ...

 Nah.

(Seriously, I love this show, but I’m on Season 3 right now and I have no idea how Walt hasn’t been caught yet. He has all the subtlety of an anvil dressed like Darth Vader)
