I have good news in my life and I need to share.
So a little over two years ago I decided to switch careers and I entered a training program to become an in home caregiver. I eventually chose to work with disabled adults. These are people who need help with daily tasks for any reason. Some still have a lot of autonomy, while others are bedridden and can't do much by themselves.
Starting out I was very nervous. I've been intimidated by the medical field since forever and while my duties were supposed to stop short of anything medical that just isn't how it works on the ground. But once I got some experience my confidence grew. It still bothered me that my training fell short of the needs of my job.
I decided I wanted to get a degree as a nursing assistant (CNA, or aide soignante in French--I live in France). There's a demand for them and sometimes you can get a job doing everything they do, especially in an elderly care facility, and your employer will put you through the certification. I got a job at a nearby retirement home and the director agreed that after a year working there she'd put me through the program.
Reader, it was awful. I no doubt made a lot of mistakes but it was also objectively mismanaged. While I was there they had their state review and got a "carte rouge"--the lowest rating. After a month, they fired me.
This was devastating. Financially, it was a disaster. This has been the hardest year I've ever lived through financially. And I'm lucky to have family that helps as well as to live in a country that believes in maintaining a safety net.
Anyway, things were rough and the best I could find was part-time work with my old job. I got a new counselor at the unemployment office, though. She's amazing. She helped me apply through a special program for housing in a nearby city. And she helped me apply for the CNA program at the nursing school there. She even got me fully funded and approved for a living stipend (seriously the woman is a miracle worker all hail Mme D).
Two months later I bounce into my interview for the program thinking with my experience and sincere wish to learn and help people it's a slam dunk.
Reader, it was not.
There were two women interviewing me and from the moment I walked in one of them was openly hostile. The other didn't say much. After about five minutes I knew it was over. She didn't even let me ask questions at the end, she showed me the door.
I was very disappointed but after the initial shock I just tried to accept it. I'd have to wait two more months before the official list of successful candidates came out but I started working on plan b and c and d, etc.
The list came out yesterday but when I checked it wasn't posted yet. I was not looking forward to reading it and confirming my name wasn't on it so I forgot to check back that afternoon. This morning, I looked at it.
My name was on it.
MY NAME WAS ON IT.
I GOT IN.
