Summary: AU. Set in 2018. Listen to “delicate” by Taylor Swift. 

Warnings: Emotional cheating. Star-crossed lovers. (If I missed a warning, please tell me). 

This is for the best. She had to keep telling herself that. The stolen glances didn’t mean anything. They couldn’t make any promises to each other and they couldn’t ever truly be together. 

There was only one place where they could be themselves. It was in a little hole-in-the-wall restaurant on the outskirts where no one would ever recognize them. She sat in a back corner, waiting for him to walk through the door. 

When he entered he wasn’t wearing Fire Nation clothes at all. He had disguised himself in a dark pair of jeans and nikes with a cobalt blue sweater. Katara bit her lip as she looked him over thinking about how much she wanted to hold his hand and run through town before kissing in the rain. 

He sat down next to her as she passed him the tea. Their past conversation ran through her mind as neither of them spoke. Is it cool that I said all that? Is it chill that you’re in my head? Is it too soon to do this yet? She wondered to herself. 

She reached out and entwined her fingers with his. Do the girls back home touch you like I do? She placed her free hand against his scar. They had never kissed. It had never gotten past hand holding and her hand occasionally on his face in comfort. 

She wished he could stay here with her. She didn’t want to share him with Mai anymore. She didn’t want to share him with anyone because she liked him more than she was willing to admit. 

She wanted him. 

She wondered when he slept if he ever dreamt of her. Sometimes when she looked into his eyes, she pretended he was hers all the time. She loved him. All she wanted to know is if he loved her too. 

She felt his hand squeeze hers. “Come with me,” he whispered lowly to her. Her hand fell away from his face. She tilted her head and looked at him quizzically. “Katara, it’s okay. Come with me, I want to show you something,” he pulled on her hand as he slide out of the booth and grabbed his tea. She went to let go of his hand as she followed him out of the booth, but he held fast onto her hand. “Zuko!” she hissed, “People will see!” 

“I don’t care. Let them see,” Zuko muttered as he pulled her through the dingy restaurant. The first thing she noticed as they stepped outside was that it was raining. Heavily. The second thing that she noticed is neither one of them had an umbrella. 

She glanced around quickly before waving her hand and a dry spot in the rain opened above them as she water bended the water away from them. Zuko glanced at her and smiled before making a run towards the park, her hand held fast in his. 

When they reached the bridge above the Turtleduck pond, Zuko turned towards her and dropped her hand. “Mia and I broke up,” Zuko whispered a small sad smile upon his face. 

Katara felt her heart begin to beat faster as she bit her lip. Zuko let out a growl. “When you do that, it makes me want to kiss you.” Katara let go of her lip. “The problem is,” he said as he leaned in, “If I kissed you, I don’t think I’d be able to stop.” 

“Then don’t,” Katara whispered before crashing her lips to his, and rain cascaded upon them.

Atla AU where during the Eclipse, Zuko confronts his father, and Ozai is shocked when he discovers that his son can redirect lightning.

… that is to say, when Zuko receives the lightning thrown at him and is momentarily overwhelmed by the sheer amount of power rushing through his body, he’s not thinking as much about where he’s aiming his redirection than he maybe should have been, and his father receives a shot-to-kill lightning bolt directly to the chest. Fatally.

Zuko comes to his senses and is left alone in a room with a body, and a terrible feeling in his stomach.

To his surprise, when the eclipse ends, the doors open, and the guards rush in, he’s not immediately exiled, or executed, or even imprisoned. He’s simply met with mouths agape and the sort of silence you’d expect when the fate of a nation hangs in the balance. He’s taken to a quiet room while the Fire Sages examine the crime scene to determine what the will of the spirits is, and then brought out again to face them when they’ve made their decision.

Any member of the Royal Family can challenge for the right to rule via Agni Kai. Zuko challenged his father, and although it was not a match in the traditional sense, it was only fair for him to do so after his father’s disrespect of the ‘traditional sense’ in enacting Agni Kai three years ago; and won. The Fire Sages announce that by the Spirits’ decree, he is the rightful Firelord.

Zuko does not tell them what happened, nor correct them when they make the assumption that he has mastered the cold-blooded fire and shot lighting as an attack on his father and an attempt to gain the throne for himself. He stays silent, he does not speak up when they talk politics, he does not protest in the slightest. All he feels is a numbed fear of what this means, what this means for him, but more importantly, what this means for the war. It was not his destiny to defeat the Fire Lord. His father taken down by another member the royal family is expected at best, a cause for martyrdom at the worst- but it is not a victory for the Avatar. It is not in itself something that will bring the end of the Fire Nation’s conquest, and Zuko knows enough politics to know that he is trapped. If the Avatar had taken out the Fire Lord, there would be hope in the other nations, and there would be doubt within his own nation, enough so that altogether they could be steered back onto the right path, but that didn’t happen. With him on the throne now, he is trapped in rooms with admirals and generals and bloodthirsty tyrants who would be more than happy to figurehead him while they carry out their own sick ideas, or who would see him fall for what he did to their old and more respected head of state. They do not respect him, for his age, for his inexperience, for his disrespect. He cannot speak out, he is in no position to instigate real change.

He knows he cannot abdicate the throne either, because however bad he has it, his sister in his position would solve nothing. Even if she thinks she is, she’s not ready to be the Fire Lord, and obviously she has wildly different ideas of what makes a good leader to him. He can’t find his uncle, let alone face him this way.

And also because for the war to end, the Avatar has to defeat the Fire Lord. If Azula were on the throne, Zuko has no doubt that this ‘defeat’ would be in the same vein as what would have been Ozai’s.

He doesn’t know what it means for him. He has an idea, and it’s not like it’s much better, but if he can spare anyone else from what’s coming, it’s the least he can do, maybe the only thing he can do to try, right?

A funeral is held for his father. The Fire Sages announce to the nation what the spirits have made of his death, and proudly crown Zuko the new Fire Lord. They proclaim that it is a good omen for their nation, a sign of their just cause to have such a strong leader come and enact justice in order to claim the throne and lead their nation to victory.

Agni guided his hand, they say, and with it, the start of a prosperous new era. Long live Fire Lord Zuko!

The citizens of his nation accept him readily, and there is a terrible feeling in his stomach.

“Why is everyone wearing white?”

Sokka poked a finger at one of the locals, less inconspicuously than he might have thought. “I thought red was supposed to be these people’s colour. We look out of place.”

“Haven’t you heard?” The merchant at the stall over thumbed out a pamphlet, and handed it, unfortunately enough, to the one of them that couldn’t read. “We’re in mourning. You two should be in mourning too.”

Sokka tried not to be too indignant at the man’s eavesdropping, but he supposed information was information. And this seemed like pretty important information. “Okay, well, who died?”

“Who died? Have you been under a rock?” At that, Toph smirked, but Sokka was too concerned with this sudden news to bring up the semantics of the Western Air Temple.

“Just tell me!” Sokka felt a piece of paper in his hand, as Toph had finally decided to relinquish her useless bounty. Sokka whipped it up to read, and his eyes caught on the words the exact moment the merchant clarified-

“Fire Lord Ozai?!”

This was unbelievable. This was completely insane. This was…

Sokka knew that this should have been good news, but all he felt was a horrible, terrible, growing sense of dread in his stomach. Beside him, Toph had stopped moving, and Sokka knew she was listening very intently for something.

“It’s true,” she helpfully confirmed. Even she couldn’t keep the surprise out of her voice.

“He was killed during the Day of the Black Sun,” the merchant went on. “Not by the invading forces, but within the sanctity of the palace walls themselves.”

The pit in Sokka’s stomach grew larger.

“It was lightning that defeated him. He was struck down, they say, in Agni Kai. Defeated by his son, and successor.”

This was bad. This was very bad.

“So that means…” Sokka’s gut had figured it out, but his brain was still putting the pieces together.

“We have a new Fire Lord, one who inspires us, one who gives us hope that we will end this war victorious.”

“Zuko.” Toph stated bluntly, without a hint of readable emotion in her voice.

Sokka corrected her. “Fire Lord Zuko.”

coming to the end of the school year and hoping that after exams i will be inclined to actually dig my nails into this and start writing/posting. if anyone wants to help that would be appreciated but I’m not sure exactly how that would work out.

anyway i have not given up on this! it’s definitely my biggest project as so many of my other fics/ideas are largely canon compliant/canon rewrites which are easy because it’s just ‘what if this episode except this happened as well’ in which case the biggest issues i have are keeping things concise and making sure enough of the word count is actually the new stuff I’ve added and not just an in depth exploration of the canon moments and my thoughts and feelings on them el oh el. but this one throws the actual episodic structure of ATLA out the window and does its own thing (the prompt is basically ‘what if Zuko and Sokka were forcibly sidelined from the main plot and left alone together?’) with the only exceptions of big overarching story and necessary character moments. but honestly those are my personal favourite fics to read anyway because there’s less of them and it makes the moments where the main canon ties back in all that much sweeter.

anyway, on top of this, the other ficlets i am writing to keep myself busy include: two seperate dragon zuko aus (taken two seperate ways), a ghost zuko au (cursed, not dead), more on strifentines’ swap au (mostly my take on the Agni Kai, i have Ideas), platonic soulmate zuko & aang au in the style of the double life smp where they share pain, zuko firelord as a result of the eclipse au, lu ten survives au, zuko and azula both blessed in ways that the other’s mere existence messes up au, zuko hamlet au, etc

yes there is a blatantly common denominator there but if it gets me to actually write something, nobody is allowed to complain. but yeah again just hoping my motivation kicks in soon and i can be bothered actually taking the risk and posting on ao3

uhm zukka/zuko/sokka enjoyers would you guys be interested if I were potentially to start posting a fic (on Ao3) I’ve been chipping away at. asking here because I haven’t actually posted on Ao3 before and idk what it’s like over there.

anyway it’s a Zuko centric (but with much Sokka, and appearances from the Gaang (including Suki) and naturally Iroh) hero/villain/vigilante slash modern college au that follows the two boys when they accidentally end up roommates in the same dorm sometime in the equivalent of Season 2 Ba Sing Se and decide to go with it because they both think they can get information from the other. meanwhile in the wacky world of vigilantism Sokka ends up tailing a mysterious vigilante he’s heard is called The Blue Spirit because the guy seems to be active in the area, supposedly saved Aang’s life once, and if he’s a good guy, he could be a useful ally to take down Ozai, corrupt super-powered politician and secret lead of the city’s crime underworld.

Sokka has no powers/bending, Zuko swears up and down that he does (even if he can’t firebend, not like his sister or father or anyone else, even if he can’t really prove it right this second), and I’m working on a superpower system that is largely based on the Avatar spirit world. It’s a relatively slow burn, but we’ll get there, and I will be doing my best to give theatre kid Zuko justice. I’m working on main themes rn but I also hope to dip into sub-themes exploring disability, sexuality, and healing, and there will be an eclipse.

I have the plot outline and various details of the whole story, I’m most (probably?) of the way through Chapter 1 (4000 words and counting), and I’d probably start posting once I finished up the chapter and also decided on a title.

Kataang will also feature relatively canon compliantly :3 and also major character death. mostly temporary but i might change my mind

Finally! I can contribute to making my own Maiko content. Just posted my first Maiko Fanfiction for this Fandom who has always been so kind to me since the D-1 ✨

I am kinda nervous. Since all the Maiko Fanfic that I’ve read are beautifully written. I wasn’t confident enough at first, but eagerly wanted to write them since they were my comfort couple at this moment. I hope you enjoy it! ♥️

Hello! I just posted My New Maiko Fanfiction! This is Zuko’s POV from the story Glimpse of Us.

It’s okay if you want to read this first because both are from different points of view of the situation. Some of the dialogue comes from their comic and series references.

The Idea of this story is I have this thought about modern-day Zuko singing You Were Beautiful by Day6 at the top of his lungs when Mai broke up with him. Felt like I need to make it happen so here we are. This is such a self-indulgence because drunk singer Zuko was so random, I know.

Summary:

Maiko Modern AU. Three months ago, his relationship with Mai ended. Obviously, that was against his will but it was definitely his fault. He’s the one who messed things up so it's equitable he constantly feels regret and loss after that. Everybody knows Mai is his significant other, she has always been the missing piece in his life before.

He wanted to fix everything. He wanted to start all over again with Mai. However, his life crumbled ahead of his eyes when he saw Mai picked up by another man. It wasn't her fault since they had already broken up. However, it successfully made him devastated. He couldn't watch Mai with another man.

Hello! I just posted My New Maiko Fanfiction!

Finally, this is the final part of the series and OMG! I didn’t originally plan for this to be a multi-chapter story but, I think that would deliver the story better as I accidentally poured a little bit of drama here.

I wasn’t planning on posting this today since my original plan was to finish all of it before posting it gradually. But I love 7 as a number so I just posting the first chapter today. Actually, I post chapter 2 as well!

I initially intended to write just 5 chapters, but it looks like the story will stretch to 7 (I’m sorry for my inconsistency). I already wrote till chapter 5 and I hope it can meet the light as soon as possible.

Summary:

Maiko Modern AU. After 3 months of breaking up, Mai and Zuko reunite again. At an unexpected time, Zuko shows up at Mai's apartment. He was drunk and disheveled. Moreover, Zuko who intended to make things up for all the wrong-doing he did, just passed out into Mai's arms after smiling like a fool and whispering words that made her heart flutter wildly. Can they rebuild their relationship and be honest about their feelings for each other?

Ps. I also came across a picture on Pinterest that perfectly captures the Maiko couple vibe. I can totally imagine Zuko setting it as his lock screen because he's so down bad with Mai. I had to add that to the story! I've already shared the picture on Twitter. If I know the owner of these pics I’ll kindly credit them💕
