i feel like this is symptomatic of the larger trend im rankled by wherein the gender/sexuality politics of utena are prioritized over the existential themes that actually underpin all these narrative conflicts, but the fact that utena’s grief and depression are rarely discussed despite being the linchpin of her entire character in many ways (because i guess it’s less aesthetically compelling than how she navigates her gender identity/lesbianism) is just a bit bothersome i suppose. like i wish we could acknowledge them as integrally interconnected facets of her character construction rather than simply focalizing one register at the expense of the other. because like. she’s literally still in her fucking coffin -_-
