A New Dawn

Or: Geek writes about something other than Danganronpa Re:Birth

Plot: Byleth wakes up after being asleep for five years. Only... everything is small to her now.

The first thing Byleth Eisner noticed when she woke up was that something was on her. She wasn’t fully conscious, so she assumed it was some sort of insect, frog, or small mammal.

She blinked, her green eyes heavy with sleep. Once she looked down to where the thing was, she had to do a double take.

It was a person. A tiny person sat there on her chest. Probably a villager. But it wasn’t just the person who was tiny.

The trees were as well, looking like flowers or shrubs in comparison to her. And she could no longer see the fine details in the grass. Once the person noticed that she was awake, he clambered off of her with terror.

“H-hey, are you awake?” The person choked out. Byleth had to listen closer in order to hear his voice. She nodded, slowly rising to a sitting position.

“Where am I?” Byleth asked. The person winced, and the professor made a mental note to speak softer.

“We’re in a village at the base of the monastery. What are you doing in a place like this?” The villager asked. “I honestly did not expect to find someone floating down the river. Especially a giantess. Garreg Mach Monastery is upstream, but that place is abandoned.”

“What do you mean?” Byleth asked.

“Huh? You don’t know? The Church of Serios isn’t there anymore. Though there have been some folks living there in the five years since... you know...” the villager trailed off. “Regardless, the imperial army has taken over now.”

Imperial army? The monastery abandoned? Byleth’s head was spinning taking in this new information. Wait...

“What year is it?” She asked.

“Um... are you feeling okay? You didn’t hit your head, did you?” The villager asked. “It’s the Ethereal Moon of the year 1185, nearly five years since the monastery fell. Tomorrow was supposed to be the millennium festival. But who has time to think of things like that?”

The millennium festival? Sothis, she almost forgot about that.

“The millennium festival...” she trailed off.

“Uh, yeah, that’s what I said. But with the war and the archbishop missing and all... I doubt there is a soul to be found who has enough blessings worth counting,” the villager said.

Okay, that’s it. Byleth had to see for herself. She slowly got up.

“Hey! Be careful, will you? Where do you think you’re going?” The villager yelled.

“To the monastery...” Byleth said, looking down at the now extremely tiny villager.

“Are you crazy? The imperial army is there! Although... I don’t really think they can take you down, but still-.” The villager said. “Come on, I promise that I won’t say you’re a coward... mostly because my entire body is the size of your thumb... just forget about going there!” Byleth shook her head. “You just remembered I tried to stop you, got it? It’s not on my conscience if you wind up dead.”

“My students are waiting for me...” She said, her gaze fixed on the smaller monastery.

“Students? You really are crazy, aren’t you?” The villager said.

Byleth walked away, ignoring the villager’s mumble of ‘unbelievable’. How she managed to hear that was beyond her.

-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-

She couldn’t really enter the monastery, given her larger size. So she just decided to look in the windows, trying to see if there were any signs of living people.

Just when all hope seemed lost, she looked through the chapel window...

It was Claude. Older, but alive and well. He had seen her, and he barely even flinched. Instead, he greeted her with that same old smile.

“You overslept, teach!” Claude said. “And you went through a bit of a growth spurt, too! You’re like, what? Five? Ten inches taller? Pretty rude to keep a fella waiting like that. Wouldn’t you say?”

“I have been pretty busy sleeping the past five years,” Byleth said, making the Leicester Alliance noble chuckle ever so slightly.

Claude walked towards the windowsill, and Byleth instinctually held her hand out to catch him. He stepped on her hand without a hint of fear. The feeling of his footsteps on her palm was strange, almost slightly ticklish.

“What’s with that surprised look, my friend?” He asked, a hand on his hip. Claude walked closer to the heel of her hand. “You didn’t really think I’d given up on you coming back. Did you? Although, I really didn’t expect you to come back like this!” He chuckled at the end of his sentence, looking out towards the sky.

“I didn’t expect to be this size, either...” Byleth admitted, shaking her head.

“Can you feel it? A new dawn is finally here...” Claude said. “Not just for us, though. No, for all of Fodlan.”

Byleth nodded slightly, looking towards the now closer sky.

Nothing was going to get in her way of protecting those who were once her students, not even being half the size of the monastery.

Giant Byleth Fic

Prologue

"It is most rude to interrupt a moment of repose. Very rude indeed."

Byleth could do nothing but stare in silence at the green haired girl sitting atop the throne in front of him. A million questions ran through his head. What happened to his usual dream? Was this even still a dream? It seemed like a dream, but something about this felt so real... and almost familiar in a sense. Byleth was broken out of his thoughts when the girl spoke again,

"Now come to me, I wish to have a look at you."

Not knowing what else to do, Byleth obeyed the girl and stepped forward. The girl on the throne, who had been looking down this whole time, was taken aback when all she saw were a pair of boots. Her head jerked up and met with Byleth's face.

"Huh... I have certainly not seen the likes of you before. Who are you anyway?"

Byleth was silent at first, his forehead wrinkled as if he were struggling. Finally, he gave a shaky "Byleth" and pointed to himself. The girl's expression softened upon hearing Byleth speak, quickly realizing that the giant boy must not speak often.

"Huh. I shall not ever grow accustomed to the sound of human names," she mused, "I would like to know your date of birth as well, but that seems like something you would not know." Byleth shook his head in response.

"I see. Well," she yawned, "I think it may be time for yet another nap... It is almost... time to... begin..." As the girl on the throne trailed off, everything began to fade away into nothingness. Then Byleth heard a different voice, a familiar one.

"Hey. Time to wake up."

A fun spin of the prompt:

You and the narrator are friends. The narrator respects your opinion of not wanting to be the main character, while you let the narrator vent to you about how stupid people are. One day, you both get tired of living like this and decide to find a way to end the story once and for all. Shenanigans ensue.

Despite having pink hair, untold magic power and a tragic backstory, the narrator refuses to make you the main character.
