You knew Ace was gone the moment he stopped running along side you. Your pleas to leave mixed in with gunshots and war cries and the incessant voice that made Ace freeze in the first place. You pulled on his arm, looking past his shoulder to the bodies littered over the battlefield and the towering fortress behind that.

In the blink of an eye, Ace was running back into the heat of battle, flaming fist colliding with Akainu’s molten one, fire smashing against magma. Then Luffy was gone too, chasing after his older brother like the game of tag they’d play as kids. You tried to pull him back, but you couldn’t keep up with them.

In the time that you were steadying yourself on your hands and knees, you looked back up to see Akainu standing tall, victorious, and Luffy on the ground, holding a limp Ace in his bloodied hands and begging him to stand up, stand up stand up—

You think you screamed for your crewmate, and after that was a blur. You remember Marco coming up and helping you to your feet, barking orders in your ear to help him drag Ace away. You blacked out the rest of it.

Marco caught you up after you woke up three days after in your own bed on the ship. Your body was sore, bandages and gauze wrapped around gashes you couldn’t remember getting. Marco explained what happened, telling you what you wanted to hear last. He knew you well enough to know you were gonna book it out the room and towards Ace’s as soon as the doctor said ‘he’s alright.’

Ignoring Marco’s scolds, your legs ached beneath you as you stumbled to Ace’s cabin, tears in your eyes for what you were prepared to see. You chose not to knock; you didn’t want to accidentally wake him up.

You peeked your head in the room—furniture surfaces dusty after he left to kill Blackbeard—and there he was. Sitting upright on the edge of the bed with gauze wrapped around his torso, hints of red bleeding through the bandages.

He stared back, studying all the things that’s changed about you since he left months ago.

“…Your hair’s longer.” He whispered.

You almost immediately hugged him as tight as possible, not releasing your hold even a bit,

“You idiot! Don’t ever do that again!” Your voice lacked any bite as a few tears ran down your cheeks. You could feel him give you a small, weak smile from over your shoulder.

“Advice taken..”

You always swore your cramps were gonna kill you. They hurt like hell, and made it nearly impossible to move sometimes, even sleep. It was frustrating how they hindered you so often, especially when you knew how much it stopped you from going out with your boyfriend, even though he always swore he didn’t mind staying in if you were in pain.

So there you were, laying on your side in your bed, waiting until the pain in your lower stomach subsided enough to try to continue with your assigned chores around the Whitebeard ship. Ace came in quietly, already figuring by the pain killers on the nightstand that you were bedridden.

He slipped into bed behind you wordlessly, already knowing how to make himself useful with a trick he learned over the couple years he’d been with you.

He slipped his arm over your waist and pulled you close, resting his hand on your stomach where it hurt. Using his devil fruit, heat emitted from his palm, acting as a makeshift heating pad, while he ran his other hand through your hair gently.

“Better?”

You didn’t let out another word, letting out a satisfied hum in response, slightly leaning into his hand while trying to get in a comfortable position, both to sleep and get the warm heat from his palm to ease your cramps. Once you got in a position you found comfortable, you slowly shut your eyes in oblivion. Ace didn’t mind at all, later on even his eyelids were getting heavy, falling asleep with his arms around around you in a comfortable silence.

(at this point you love his devil fruit more then him 😞)

Chapter 1; Nightmares

Bloodshed, violence and screams,

You trembled on the hard, withered ground trying to get yourself to get up,

“Ace!” You screamed, trying to stop him from clashing with Akainu’s molten hand an—

“Y/n!” Ace shouted, shaking you awake from your traumatizing nightmare. “Are you alright, you were shaking and everything!”

Oh.

“Yeah Ace, I’m fine,” You said before trying to drift back to sleep, a comfortable silence flowing between the two of you, before you were waken up by a small nudge on your side.

“Hey, wanna see somethin’ cool?” Ace asked with a huge grin with a mischievous glint in his eyes as you gave him a small nod, signaling him to proceed.

He stretched his arms out near either side of his head, a small fireball appearing in on of his hands, before he stared to throw several others to his right, juggling them in a circle before restarting the process once again.

“Ace thats—“ You trailed off, following each fireball he passed to the other hand each time,

“Cool, right?” He responded for you, glancing at you before training his gaze back on the fireballs, finally stopping his cycle.

“Cool?! That’s amazing!” You said, a slight chuckle coming out of your mouth while looking at him with awe, a a slight smile growing on your face, Ace could feel his ego grow inside of him, but didn’t comment about it.

“M’kay, what about this one?” Ace talked over your soft laughs, adjusting the arm that held you close under the bed sheets. His other arm was exposed and extended for you to see, the lights of your shared cabin only being his.

“I call this one ‘light show.’” From the palm of his hand, a small flame rose up from his hand, and it seemed to disappear for a moment…

Then it flashed like a firework right before your eyes, tiny flames floating back into his palm. Of course, he was watching you the whole time, anticipating your praises and affectionate words.

“Cool, right? Another ten out of ten?” He asked you excitedly.

“Mhm! Do another!” You said with a huge grin growing on your face, enjoying the little show he’s put on for you.

Later, the two of you slept blissfully together, your head weighted on his chest as he lightly snored beside you,

You completely forgot about your nightmare that had happened earlier.
