Emmy’s confusion was written plainly across her face. She knew next to nothing about the royal family and their politics. She didn’t make it a point to know the happenings of Hollywood– or by extension anyone remotely famous– so Aiden was talking nonsense as far as she was concerned.
She briefly wondered if that was how he felt about the movies she made him watch.
“So, here’s a shocker: I have absolutely no idea what you’re talking about.” She shrugged, opening her mouth to say something else when he said he had a bone to pick with her about her movies. Her mouth snapped closed and she folded her arms across her chest, a single eyebrow ticked as she prepared herself for a rebuttal. Her lips twitched, itching to grin even a little. “First of all, have you ever seen me cry? Especially after watching a movie? No. And can they be predictable? Most of the time, yeah. I don’t know about you, but life is pretty awful and unpredictable. It’s refreshing to follow that bored formula sometimes.” Another shrug. “To know things work out in the end? I’m good with that.”
She dropped her folded arms to her side and tilted her head at him. She wasn’t sure how his sunny personality could be at all drawn to her, but it felt kind of nice that it was. She smiled, a small upward curve to the corners of her mouth. “You can. I was thinking about making some pizza rolls, you want some?”

Aiden’s understanding of the British royalty stemmed from his mother’s obsession with Princess Diana when he was younger. Though now, he didn’t really care much, except for the fact that he was happy that Prince Harry did what was best for his wife and child after so much media scrutiny.
“It’s okay, British royalty or royalty anywhere is confusing. To be honest, I have a hard time figuring out our own government. There are a ridiculous amount of people in power, but yet most of them fail to do anything good for our society,” he complained. He hated to say it, but Emmy wasn’t like most girls, but maybe he was being rude and putting Emmy into the box of typical girls that cried at movies.
“Okay, well, you got me there, good point. I mean, I don’t know. I guess it is nice that most of the time it works out. I guess I’m cynical and think that that isn’t how life works, that there is no such thing as a true happy ending because something tragic will happen and ruin you,” he said, forgetting the fact that he and Emmy had yet to have a conversation about his family and his life back in California.
“How could I ever say no to pizza rolls? Do you need help?”

Aiden was the first person she ever admitted her adoption to, not that it was hard to find out, but still. Vera didn’t feel the need to blurt it out every second of the day, which is why she kept her mouth shut most of the time. They connected on a level all their own, like he was a brother and she was his sister. She didn’t need to explain herself to him like she did everyone else. He understood her like no one else did. So, when she calls him the day prior rambling on and on about stuff that Vera couldn’t dissect over call–she has to cut him short and force him to invite her over, as much as he likes to keep to himself. He still made time for Vera. So, this is how she ended up on his couch, listening to him tell her about everything that’s happened in the past few weeks. She feels like a terrible friend, but she knows he doesn’t mind. She’s there when it matters.
“So, what was the super important news you needed to tell me?” She asks, once they had caught up on everything. He looked pensive, worried–it couldn’t be anything good.

Aiden had been pacing back and forth for the past couple of weeks, still trying to process the fact that Jameson had shown up, unannounced and unwelcomed. It bothered him in more ways than he would like to admit. To be honest, it made him reflect on his past, a past that he had chosen to put behind him. He had to confront his feelings and he wasn’t exactly the best at it. Though he had his friend group, he felt like they couldn’t understand and it seemed like the only person who could was Vera. Phone calls were sometimes their form of communication, but Aiden needed more, he needed her to sit there with him, to help him dissect the confusion on his mind.
“Um - well, so you know about my family and stuff. I’ve never wondered about my other family,” he referred to his biological family that way, not even really considering them biological. “Well - my half-brother decided that he would start off 2020 by showing up at my door and telling me that we’re related. I think he expected me to jump for joy that I have a sibling, but I shut him out. It was too much to handle.”

“Oh, Aiden.” Vera sighs. Her head rested in her hand, wondering why her life was so boring. She’d been living vicariously through her friends her entire life. Being an only child was lonely, Vera would easily admit that. “He didn’t even bother calling first to see if you wanted to meet him? He just showed up here?” Whoever it was, he sounded like a total dick. Vera never had much to worry about outside her adoptive parents–no siblings or biological mother and father in the picture. It was just her and her parents, it always had been.
“What’s his name?” Vera asks, curious of who she needed to attack now. “I have no problem beating up a dude, y’know?” It was meant to be a joke, but in all serious–she would fight anyone trying to mess with Aiden.

Aiden took a deep sigh, “Yeah, it really fucking sucks dude,” his heart pounding nearly just as fast as when he found out he and Jameson were related. “Yeah, no warning. He was grinning when he opened the door. We sat outside of my place because I didn’t want him coming in. He wouldn’t tell me how he found me except for the fact that we were linked on ancestry.com,” he looked down at his feet. “It’s just - frustrating - I just wish that he at least asked me. I felt like I was being pressured into welcoming someone into my life. Someone who shared half of the same DNA as me. It doesn’t work like that.”
“His name is Jameson, he goes by Jaime, I think,” Aiden hadn’t even bothered to getting to know the other, still frustrated by what had happened. “Please, I have no problem you beating him either. I love and appreciate you being protective of me,” he smiled. Though Vera was younger, in a way, she seemed so much older than she was.

Micah sighed with relief as the bee flew away, finally able to focus on her meal and not impending doom. “Thanks, it was my father’s idea. I was supposed to be a boy and Micah is as close to Michael as he could manage,” she said with a scoff. “I got their classic, the ribs. They came highly recommended by my boyfriend who just so happens to be a cook. I trust his opinion. ”

“I honestly don’t know what my parents would have named me had I been a girl. My parents said girl names are difficult to come up with,” he laughed, clearly lying through his teeth about his own family. “Oh, the ribs are to die for. I love their mac and cheese too. It’s so good. Oh wow. It must be nice dating someone who’s a cook. The endless amount of good food that you get blessed with,” he faked a chef’s kiss.

With Luna and Roxy’s leashes in hand, Amelia was enjoying herself as they walked along the sidewalk in the early evening as the sun began setting. She took a moment to glance up to the sky, taking in the different shades of orange and pink, when she noticed both pitbulls pulling harder. Stopping in her tracks, she peered past them to see what they were trying to get to. “Damn it,” she muttered. Hearing a person coming up behind her, she sighed. “This isn’t even close to the weirdest thing I’ve ever asked someone, but I need a big favour. Can you please either move those two toads, or hold their leashes while I move the toads? I’d go around them, but God knows if there’s more in the grass on that side, and I’d rather not take them that close to the street, since there’s still a lot of cars out.”

Aiden walked the usual route, taking his dogs for their first of two walks of the day. He loved to spoil them with walks when he could, knowing that sometimes he would have to ask Emmy to come over to walk them. As he was approaching, he noticed two dogs pulling and he figured they were just trying to get their owner to walk fast. He was going to make his way around her before he heard her speaking to him. “Um, I can just move them out of the way,” he offered, not wanting his dogs to try to start a fight with Amelia’s dogs. He moved towards the toad, putting both the leashes in one hand, and poking the toads so that they could hop back into the grass. “I think it’s all good here, the sidewalk has been clear of toads,” he said and before he could even hold onto the leashes tightly, Otis and Ollie made their way towards Amelia’s dogs. “Oh my god, I’m so sorry, their bark is louder than their bite.”

There was a string of little crushes in Gray’s life - things that would never amount to anything, but a specific softness he felt for a person, the way his heart would rise a little at their laugh. Aiden easily fit into this category, but there was more beyond that attraction. Sure, it may be what drew Gray close originally, but the friendship that had blossomed was better than anything he could have hoped for romantically, and they’d never spoken about it. Grayson doubted Aiden even really knew he’d once had those feelings for him, and Gray was definitely unaware that in a way, it was somehow returned.
To him, Aiden was his oldest friend. He would do anything for that bond; his brother. “No, I get it,” Gray nodded honestly. Losing people hurt. He knew that with lots of firsthand experience, but he also knew how sensitive it was to Aiden, who had truly lost so, so much. It was one reason he’d been so eager to bring Aiden over to meet Reyanne - she was the kind of mom who adopted anyone into her heart, and once she did, they stayed forever. “You just got no reason to worry.”
“Yeah, I didn’t even know I gave so much of a shit still,” Gray admitted. He’d never really dealt with the break-up like you should, so in a way, he’d never moved on from it. After things fell through more recently with Alana, and then that blip with Abby after, it left Gray in a state of vulnerability and loneliness. Somehow, Markus had tumbled in at the perfect moment, when Gray was most in need of him. “Really?” Gray felt himself flushing at Aiden’s promise of support. He wasn’t sure why that felt so good. “That… that makes me really happy. If it doesn’t work out, you’re buying me chocolate ice cream and marshmallows.”

To be honest, it was frustrating at first when people would ship Aiden and Grayson together. Sure, they were friends, but the thought of two people wanting them to date seemed so odd. Looking back now, it made sense, the nights where they ended up spooning each other after a late night session or their times just spent in either of their places just getting drunk and playing video games. Those were some of the best memories Aiden had. To be honest, meeting Grayson turned his life around and filled a void that had been there for so long. It was nice that the two had made up and that Aiden had reached a point where he could voice his feelings.
It’s always been something Aiden’s struggled with, telling people how they felt. Now that the two were close again, Aiden didn’t feel scared telling Grayson anything. “Thank you, and thank you for reassuring me instead of making me feel like an idiot for working up over the fact that my best friend might be getting back with his ex,” he smiled. “If you’re cool with it, maybe Markus and I could meet up down the line if things work up between the two of you and I can threaten him if he tries to hurt you.” Although Aiden said it in a joking manner, he was overly protective of his friends and didn’t want Grayson to be hurt again.
“I think it’s normal when you spend so much time with someone that feelings might come back from below, you know? I mean there is a lot of history there and although it was a short time before you bought a ring the first time around, clearly you must have felt something so strong to even reach that point. I know that people might disapprove and all, but at the end of the day, your love and happiness triumphs other people’s opinions,” he nodded. He laughed. “You know I’d buy you chocolate ice cream and marshmallows regardless of whether this works out or not. It can be a celebration binging or a sad binging of sweets.”
