“Wow,” Gray breathed out, fingers freezing over the keyboard as his eyes flickered up from the screen to meet Aiden’s. He knew what a big step that would have been for him, telling her about his family; hell, Grayson remembered the emotional experience Aiden had telling him. “Must be serious,” He added with a supportive smile, before returning his gaze downwards and quickly finishing up the second text with Aiden’s added sentiment to his mom. Hearing his friend talk so fondly about someone. It almost reminded Grayson of the way he’d felt for a girl who was a bit similar.

“Bro, what? All that and you haven’t kissed yet?” Grayson interjected, though he was hardly one to talk. “Sounds like you need to just go for it. I think girls like the whole intensity thing, or something. I dunno, I’ll probably never get it, but it seems like you like her. What’s the problem? And when do I meet her?”

Aiden wasn’t one to open about his life, outside of the fact that he had two dogs who he loved more than anything in this world. That was the crazy thing, to be able to open up to someone without feeling anxious. Grayson understood it and it was nice for Aiden to have his best friend back. He took a deep breath and continued, “I mean, I don’t want to jinx it and say it’s serious, but I do like her. She’s honestly so amazing. The patience she has, the kindness she embodies, it kind of reminds me of my own mom,” he simply stated. “I mean, that’s why Brie broke up with me in college. She always asked about my family and I’d find one way or another to avoid telling her what I was feeling or my past. I was ashamed of it and I just never felt close enough to tell her. It was a weird feeling, loving someone but not being emotionally close to them all at once. It’s different this time, I can feel it in my bones.”

“No, I don’t think she’s the type of girl that would be okay with me just springing a kiss on her. I want to take it slow. I want her to know that I’m not dating her for sex or whatever. I told her I wanted to get to know her and if I have to wait to kiss her, then so be it,” he declared. Aiden was never good with girls and his previous situation didn’t turn out so well for him. “I just feel nervous. You know how rare it is for me to want to commit to someone and now that I’ve reached this point, I’m scared to take a step forward. Umm...I don’t know when you’d meet her, to be honest. Isn’t that kind of quick? Introducing your crush to your best friend?”

“Alright, dude, now you’re just bein’ gross,” Grayson laughed, but the bubbly giggle and smile betrayed his genuine happiness and interest. He’d always felt invested in his friend’s lives, sometimes more than he let on. Especially since he personally had accepted the status of forever alone, it would be like living vicariously through Aiden’s own romantic endeavors, with whoever his mystery woman may be. “Ahh… Brie was a weird situation, I still don’t fault you for that whole shit show,” Grayson sighed, knowing it was best not to rehash old wounds.

“You’re probably right. I actually kinda did something like that before I left, probably wasn’t the best idea for me, either,” Grayson vaguely mentioned, trying hard not to allow his mind to keep jumping back to the events with Abby directly leading up to his departure. “Seems like you’re doing everything right. Plus, it’s the holidays. Find some mistletoe when you’re ready and make the magic happen, man. I support it.”

“I’m not being gross,” he jokingly hit Grayson on the shoulder. Aiden knew that he was probably being really gross. This wasn’t like him. Although he found girls in college attractive, Aiden never felt this type of connection to another human being. “You should have seen what I wrote when confessed my feelings, you might vomit a little.” He nodded in agreement about his ex, moving on from that conversation.

“You slept with a girl and then ditched her?!” Aiden couldn’t even hide his surprise in that. The past few years have been kind of a blur with brief mentions about Gray through Gray’s mother. Aiden knew about the few incidents that happened, but waited for his friend to bring it up. “Oh man, someone’s such a romantic. I might need your help, to be honest. I’m not so good with this romantic set up.”

“I mean, you’re bein’ a little gross…” Grayson teased, a stern expression on his face. He’d always felt a little behind the times when it came to girl talk, especially now. However; it had a sort of familiarity to it. He and Aiden used to talk so much about crushes, relationships, their hopes and stuff… as more formed adults, or whatever they were, it seemed fitting still. Gray hit Aiden back, only with partial force.

Instinctively, Grayson winced at the summary. “I- no, well, not on purpose,” He mumbled, waving it off and hoping Aiden didn’t push further. He felt bad enough, and Abby’s willingness to accept him back in his life had only hurt more. The last thing he needed was Aiden giving him shit for it. “And you think me, Grayson the forever alone, is the best person to act for romantic help? I mean, you wouldn’t be wrong to ask me, but… really, you got no one else?”

image

“Do I hear a little jealousy?” Aiden teased back. Sure, Aiden had a crush on someone, but he was so comfortable with Grayson that he flirted endlessly with the other. He recalled late night study sessions where the two ended up falling asleep and Aiden would wake up being cuddled up to Gray. There weren’t any feelings involved, but it was nice to be that comfortable with someone else.

“Oh man, Gray, you’re better than that,” Aiden probably sounded more disapproving than he intended to. “It’s okay, we all make mistakes. As long as you try and make it right, that’s all that matters.” He laughed at Gray’s comment. “You’re a hot ticket, I’m sure any person would be happy to have you in their life. I mean, you’re my brother, I trust you more than I would trust my own blood.”

It simply felt right to be back in Gray’s house, surrounded by the welcome chaos that was he and his roommates. She hadn’t been here very many times, but it already felt way more comfortable than the first few times she was here. The comfortable chaos that was Grayson’s roommates yelling at each other for whatever reason while she and Gray battled over an intense marathon of Mario Kart. After losing the previous round, Abby let out a string of swear words, slamming the switch controller down in her lap. As was custom, whoever lost had to go get the next round of snacks. She stood, setting the controller down and making her way to the kitchen to get another few backs of doritos. Thank goodness the house was kept stocked. It was as she was reaching for the bags that she heard the front door open, and who should she hear call out but Aiden. Funny. She didn’t remember telling him she was going to be here. Still, Abby smiled, taking the doritos into the living room and dropping them next to her controller as she went to greet him. The past few months with him had been really nice. Every time she saw him brought a fresh supply of butterflies in her stomach, and this was no exception. “This is a nice surprise. Did I leave my location on on my phone?” She leaned up on her toes, pressing a soft kiss to his cheek. @grayfischer

Most things in Grayson’s life made sense. The things that didn’t, like just about everything Winnie did, he could find a way to explain in a way that wasn’t puzzling. Playing video games with Abby felt as normal as it ever had - and Gray was finally beginning to feel at peace again. He was home, and there would be no more drama, all was settled. Things with Aiden had even improved, and it was like the two never grew apart; thick as thieves once more. Hearing Aiden’s voice made Grayson smile, and he stood from the couch and was headed over to his friend to give him a bro-hug, when Abby beat him to it. Gray stopped short, blinking, his brain stalling as he tried to make sense of the pieces. “Oh, you- you’ve met?” He finally asked, a confused smile on his face. One look at Aiden’s ear-to-ear grin and Grayson realized; ohh. Abby was the girl. “OH,” He said outloud, the pieces clicking in place mentally. “Wow.”

When Aiden was greeted with a kiss on the cheek, he was slightly confused until he realized that Abby was at the house too. “Oh - you two know each other?” looking back and forth between Abby and Grayson. Aiden was trying to rack up any reason about how the two knew each other. “How?” His confusion continued on even more. “Grayson and I are old college best friends. We recently reconnected when he moved back in town,” speaking directly to Abby, hoping to explain why he showed up unannounced to Gray’s house. “How do you two know each other?” Though Aiden had spoken to Gray about a girl he liked, he never outwardly said Abby’s name. He wanted the two to meet, but he never thought they had known each other before. “This is trippy.” @abbyrchrds

It took Abby a few moments to connect the dots of the situation. Aiden wasn’t there to see her, why would he be when she didn’t even tell him she was going to be here today. “Old…old college friends,” she repeated, glancing between the two of them. Immediately, her hand flew to her mouth, eyes wide. Oh fuck. She had never put the two and two together. And why would she? Even when she told Aiden about her previous relationship history (if her thing with Gray could even be called a relationship), it’s not like she told Aiden Gray’s name. It’s not like she knew that they were old friends. It’s not like Gray knew she was seeing Aiden, it’s not like she knew Aiden and Gray were friends. She shook her head, backing up as she put her hand down. “That’s…really great. Uhm…I’m just gonna go…crawl out of a bathroom window.” She took off down the hallway, knowing that in fact there was no window in the bathroom but figured it would be a good place to hide anyway. She opened the door, shutting it behind her and locking it as she took a few, shuddering breaths. This was fine. Totally fine that her current something and her ex something were really good friends. Maybe they’ve talked about her. Whatever. It was totally fine. @grayfischer

Grayson remained quiet, mostly, during the exchange between Aiden and Abby. He’d seen her pale, scurrying off, leaving him feeling beyond uncomfortable and looking at Aiden with bewilderment. As Abby disappeared down the hall, Gray cursed mentally — she certainly didn’t make things look any better. He couldn’t help but remember how Aiden had talked about her, and…. the last thing he ever wanted to do was get in the way of this. Not for them.

Besides, it wasn’t really his place to tell Aiden what has happened, right? That was Abby’s news. He didn’t have to say anything, although, Aiden’s totally confused expression right then made Gray wonder if he’d connected the dots already. It was unlikely. Aiden knew how weird Grayson was about sex, right? “Abby is a newer friend. We met last year, ‘cause of the whole nerds unite thing,” Grayson offered up in explanation, being truthful. They’d been just friends for 99% of their time knowing each other. Just that one confusing moment before he left… which had been nothing, probably. “I didn’t tell her when I left, either, so I think she’s still upset with me. I didn’t know she was your girl, but you know, I totally see it now. It’s, like, a perfect match.”

image

@aidenjcarter

Aiden watched as Abby ran to the bathroom. Of course, everything in him wanted to chase after her. He was curious as to why she reacted the way she did. It shouldn’t have been so weird that the three of them had known about each other. He didn’t question it. Aiden kept his eye towards the hallway just in case he saw Abby peeping out again. He let out a deep sigh, wondering if he had done something to mess up this whole thing with Abby or something.

“Oh, that’s probably why I never knew the two of you knew each other. I mean you and I were already drifted apart by then. I met her one time when I went in to speak to an old professor but we only started becoming friends when we sat together at a coffee shop and things kind of progressed from there.” He sighed, hearing that Abby was also abandoned by Gray. His heart felt for her. “Is she - is she the girl that you did the thingy with and then just left?” Aiden recalled an old conversation that the two shared. “We’re dating. I haven’t asked her to be my girlfriend yet. Thanks though. I think she complements me really well.” @abbyrchrds

Maybe the bathroom wasn’t the best place to hide. For one, there was certainly no window. For another, Abby couldn’t really hear the conversation that Aiden and Gray were having. She hoped they weren’t arguing. God, that would be something, wouldn’t it? Two men fighting over her. Her therapist would never believe her. Maybe she should peek out and listen. What harm could it do? If anything, she could just quietly pack up her stuff and sneak out the back onto the beach without them noticing. They weren’t even using her switch to play Mario Kart; they used Gray’s. All she had to do was pick up her backpack and leave.

Yes, that would work. Just get her stuff and slowly walk out the door. Quietly, she pushed open the bathroom door, making sure to leave it open so she wouldn’t make any noise. As she tiptoed through the hallway, Aiden and Gray’s conversation grew more clear, and while she still only heard snippets, her heart did somersaults. Aiden mentioning the thingy that she did with Gray and not being his girlfriend yet and it all felt like so much. The escape plan would never work. She’d have to do something else. Maybe a window on the lower floor? There was one in one of the non bedroom rooms downstairs. Abby knew that for sure. Slowly, she stepped around the living room, trying to be quiet and keep the focus off her as she tried to reach for her bag. @grayfischer

image

The speed that Aiden put two and two together made Grayson’s head spin. How quickly a nice afternoon turned into a nightmare, and Aiden’s ever-so-cheerful smile made him feel worse. To be fair, there was no way Gray could have known the future, but still… he felt worried his mere existence would be in the way of his friend’s happiness, or that this revelation would push Abby further, and his throat tightened. “Uh, what?” Gray asked, feigning confusion instead of giving a direct answer. Luckily, at the moment, the floorboards creaked and Grayson’s attention snapped from Aiden’s confession about Abby to the girl, in the flesh, looking quite like a deer in headlights when Gray turned to look at her.

You are not helping, his eyes told her, almost pleading with Abby silently for an assist. Grayson could barely talk about sex on a good day, much less about the sex with her to Aiden. Especially when it was reduced to thingy. His cheeks and ears were surely a bright shade of pink. “Well, I for one, think thi-this is great. We’re all friends!” Grayson said with a smile, not turning yet to look at Aiden. “And, like, yeah, I can’t even imagine a better pairing,” His words continued, probably not making anything easier for the non-official coupling yet. Finally, he turned to Aiden. “You should stay and hangout. We were just playing video games.” @aidenjcarter

image

“Uh, nothing, nevermind,” Aiden continued on, moving past the conversation. He didn’t know if he had imagined the conversation about Abby up in his head. Regardless, Aiden wasn’t exactly the person to be confrontational. Of course, part of him cared. He wondered if his best friend and Abby hooked up. He didn’t want to be the one breaking bro code. Was the other pair hiding something from Aiden? He brushed that thought aside as well, having enough faith in two of his closest friends to be honest if there was some tension going on between them.

Aiden watched as Abby left the bathroom and was glad that he wasn’t left alone with Gray in what could have been a much long and awkward silence. “Yeah, man,” Aiden paused. “I wanted to introduce the two of you but I didn’t know if it was weird to introduce my g - the girl I’m dating to my best friend,” he admitted. “Thank you, that means a lot,” Aiden let out another smile. “Are you sure? I don’t want to intrude on you guys or anything,” Aiden’s eyes searched for another controller to make sure that he was actually wanted in the house. He was okay with leaving and letting Gray and Abby have their alone time. @abbyrchrds

Abby sent a panicked look back at Grayson. What do you expect me to do! It said. Thankfully, she had never mentioned Grayson by name when she told Aiden about her very brief relationship history, but it probably wouldn’t take long for him to put the two and two together, if his question was any indication. When Abby finally felt she had been caught, she stopped moving, gently folding her hands and holding them down in front of her. “I think it’s great that we’re all friends already, it makes it far easier to divide the time between the two of you.” When it came down to it, she really didn’t want to have to choose. “No, Aiden, sit.” Abby gestured to the couch. “My extra joy cons are in my bag, and I can go get more snacks.” She looked over at Gray. “You still have my stash of cheddar and sour cream ruffles, right?” @grayfischer

With three people living in the house, there were plenty of controllers sitting around, and Abby’s suggestion to get more helped, too. Gray felt his heart resume at a normal rate, and his jaw unclenched. Maybe this was fine. Yeah, this was fine. With a smile, Gray moved to return to the couch, grabbing Aiden’s sleeve and giving it a tug to go with him. “Dude, stay, it’s not even a big deal. It’s not weird at all,” Gray promised, plopping down and shooting another smile to Abby. “Yep, top shelf so you might have to get up on the counter. Uh, didn’t want Winnie finding them,” Gray explained, grabbing extra joycons on the table to pass to Aiden. With Abby out of the room once more, Gray tried not to feel awkward, and decided to just reiterate one more time: “It’s awesome, dude. Like you two are just really great.” @aidenjcarter

“Okay, as long as I’m not intruding,” Aiden agreed to stay. This situation seemed perfect in his eyes, his best friend and one of the most important people in his life were already friends. Aiden felt like the transition of his life was going smoother than he thought it would. Life was working out great for him. “Thank you, I really appreciate it. It’s such a small world how the two of you know each other too,” Aiden smiled at his friend. “I’m really glad that you two already know each other. It makes it easier for me to trickle Abby into the other aspects of my life,” Aiden leaned in closer to Grayson, slightly whispering in hopes that Abby wouldn’t hear them from the kitchen. “I was thinking of asking her to be my girlfriend before February but I’m not sure of how it’ll go or if she’ll reject me or something.” @abbyrchrds

“Never,” Abby assured, giving Aiden a warm smile before glancing at Gray. “Thank you. The last thing I need is Winnie stealing my snacks.” With luck, the unopened bags she still had up there wouldn’t be stale. “Be right back,” she said, sliding on socked feet into the kitchen. She was no stranger to climbing onto the counter to get snacks; it was how she would get into the cookie jar as a kid. Still, adult Abby was better off than kid Abby in one respect: she could finally pull herself up onto the counter. To avoid slipping, she deposited her socks onto the floor before pushing herself up, using the cabinet in front of her as balance until she was kneeled up onto the marble. Still bracing herself against the cabinet , she now used a free hand to open up the snack cupboard. With a relieved sigh over the fact that the chips were close enough for her to grab the corner between her fingers, Abby did just that, pulling one bag free of the top shelf. With that, she slowly lowered herself back to the safety of the kitchen floor, pulling her socks back on. She grabbed the bag and tucked it under her arm, making her way back to the living room unaware of any conversation happening between the boys. “Alright now Aiden, I’m just warning you: just because I think you’re cute, doesn’t mean I’m not gonna wipe the floor with you at rainbow road. I’m ruthless.” @grayfischer

“She won’t reject you,” Gray replied quietly, giving an encouraging tiny smile at his friend. It was becoming easier now to shake off the initial panic and awkwardness, though his heart still raced slightly under his loose t-shirt. There wasn’t anything in the bro code that gave instruction for this kind of scenario; Gray had never even been close to being involved in something like this. Abby was only the 4th person he’d been with sexually, and those his feelings were real at the time, the way he’d left had twisted them into something else entirely.

It was nice to see something good in her life. He felt a little less bad now about the way he took off. She’d been able to find someone, and he held no ill-will about it. He had chosen to leave.

As the game started, Gray couldn’t help but smile. The banter was familiar, friendly - he shot a look over at Abby, finally, trying to read her face to make sure she was falling as easily into the sudden new trio of friendship as he was. “Seriously, dude, she’s good. She beats me, like, most of the time. You’re gonna get owned.”

Aiden was grateful for the reassurance. He had never met someone like Abby before, who just sparkled in his eyes. He felt so much hope with her in a way that he couldn’t even put into words. Of course, he had a hard time explaining it to her and would do anything to let her know how special she was to him. He had to wait for the right moment, whenever that would be. Aiden knew that he would find the perfect moment because for Abby, everything had to be perfect. With his best friend’s support, Aiden grew some confidence in the moment, hoping that it would stick for more than a few hours.

He was so grateful that the three could be friends, that he had people he wanted in his life forever, though the fear of him and Grayson drifting apart was always stuck in the back of his mind. He laughed hearing that Abby was good at video games. “That doesn’t surprise me one bit, that girl is good at everything she does. It’s insane how good she is,” Aiden spoke, as if Abby wasn’t in the room, but he meant every word he said and wanted her to know. It was all coming together nicely. His two best friends with him. Aiden couldn’t have asked for a better day.

WHO: Aiden & @grayfischer WHERE: Gray’s house WHEN: January 29th, evening

Aiden had seen the picture of Markus in Gray’s bed. Aiden knew that Markus and Gray were working on Gray’s case together, but he didn’t envision the two falling back in love. Of course, part of Aiden was happy for his friend, hoping that his friend’s life would piece back together again. On the other hand, he was terrified, terrified of the fact that he might lose his best friend again. Though Aiden never admitted it to Gray, it hurt him so much when the two drifted apart. Sure, they were both busy, but Gray chose to spend time with Markus during his free days and Aiden felt thrown to the side. Aiden tried to understand, even making time to hang out with the couple, but it never worked. It just wasn’t the same.

Aiden showed up to Gray’s house, a place he had become so familiar with. He let himself in, as usual, calling out for Grayson. “Hey Gray. Thought we could hang out for a bit,” trying to conceal the fact that he wanted to have a long discussion with his best friend.
