“You know, I can’t say I blame your dad for having held the line on that one,” Steph said, visions of Disney wallpaper and shelves and shelves of Disney figurines swimming in her head; even if that wasn’t exactly what Aiden’s mom would’ve done with her Disney space. “And I guess there are worse dreams to have pressed on you.” She’d seen the pressures of parental dreams and expectations wreak havoc on many of her classmates in high school, particular the girls on her teams who were running because it was fun or because their friends were, not because they wanted to be a track star or make it to the Olympics some day. Chuckling, she said, “Yeah, my mom was the boss in my house, too.” Maybe that was why she’d always felt closer to her father growing up, but then again, the reverse had been true for her brother. Pushing aside thoughts of what might’ve been, she shook her head gently. “You know, I don’t think I’ve ever seen him angry. I’m not sure he gets angry. Besides, I think your baking dumbness has to be less annoying than whatever else he has to deal with.” Unless college students had changed a great deal in the past six years, she was sure there was plenty of idiocy there to go around. “You gotta save the bribes for the last week– or last few weeks of class,” she said, laughing. “You get the baked goods, they get their education, nobody snitches.” At least, that was how it would work in an ideal world. Swatting her hand at his compliment, as if that would make it disappear, Steph shook her head. “I think you’re biased with this great friend stuff,” especially because he was right, they could stand to hang out more, “But I certainly wouldn’t complain about more facetime with you or the pups.” In fact, it sounded like a pretty great idea. “No,” she gasped, her aghast expression only a slight exaggeration when he went on to mention his typical dinner. “Come on, I know you’re not the best cook, but you’ve gotta have something more interesting than that. And as for visiting me at work, you really don’t have to do that as much as you do, anyway.” She’d never claim she didn’t appreciate his company, especially when things were slow in the afternoon, but hanging around so much delicious-smelling dairy couldn’t be entirely fun for him.

“Yeah. Apparently he suggested that I could just sleep in the room with them so that we could all bond, but I’m sure my dad knew it was her way of trying to sneak her way into creating a Disney room. I swear it was like a five year old lived inside my mom’s body,” he laughed. Disney brought his mother so much happiness. In his eyes, she was a real life Disney princess, without the whole aspect of needing a man to rescue her. His mother shined bright in his eyes, the brightest star in the night sky and that’s how he chose to remember her. Every time he missed her, he’d look up at the stars at night and try to find the brightest one. It was his way of acknowledging that she was still there watching over him. “That’s true. I mean I could be his college student and annoy him about films. I feel like I should hide the fact that I’m not a big movie fan away from him. He might disown me as a friend or something,” Aiden laughed. Aiden enjoyed TV shows. He could bed in bed all day watching Netflix, but something about movies just didn’t feel the same. It didn’t have the same appeal, although there were many people who would argue otherwise. “That’s actually a smart idea. Let’s just hope they give me actual brownies and not weed brownies because that could end really bad. I’ll make sure to share some of my bribery with you,” he laughed. “I mean of course I’m biased. I mean we are friends so it’d be weird if I wasn’t biased towards my feelings about our friendship. Yeah and I’m sure the pups would love to have more company around too. I can only afford so much doggy daycare. I’m grateful the lady there gives me a phenomenal discount considering I’m a regular. I considered letting them come with me on vacation, but they don’t like car rides to the vet let alone a long plane trip.” Aiden laughed at Stephanie’s reaction to his dinner. “Hey, it’s filled with protein. Add a little seasoning and you cannot go wrong with it. I honestly could eat eggs every single day. I would make fried eggs but I hate dealing with oil and having to watch the egg. I like simple meals. Honestly, I should invest in a crockpot, maybe I’ll be a better cook. And, you know I don’t have to do anything I don’t want to do. I come because I want to, not because I’m obligated to. Plus, it’s nice to not be cooped up in my apartment.”

Someone sitting down at her table stirred her thoughts, blue-green hues finding the familiar face that presented itself before her. Though, her eyes shifted to the book sat next to her, one hand moving to cover the title as she shrugged. “Oh you know, just boring things,” she sent a small smile his way before continuing to speak. “Aiden, right? What brings you over to my table on this lovely afternoon?” She had only seen him around a couple of times, though he was someone to easily remember.
“Are you reading the newspaper or something? Because that is pretty boring,” he chuckled, trying to make the girl smile a little. “Yes, that’s me. And you’re Delilah,” he started singing Hey There Delilah in his head. “Well you seemed like a familiar face and plus I hate sitting alone so I figured I’d get to know you more and also not have to look like a loner. What about you? What are you doing here? Just reading?”

Delilah caught the sudden twinkle that came about in Aiden’s eye at the mention of her being a teacher. “Wait, really?” she questioned first, before smiling at the man again. “I’m actually a professor over at UNC, I teach Human Memory,” she stated before she brought her hand to the blue textbook beside her and slid it over to the center of the table. “Which is why i’m actually reading Essentials of Human Memory, one of the textbooks I assign to my students.” she tapped her finger against the hard covered book before drawing back and taking another sip of her now almost empty cup of coffee. Delilah soon found herself giggling at his rambling, finding it funny that someone else had the same issue as she did. “Mmm,” she started, thinking for a few seconds. “Vanilla bean cappuccino on days that I am not as stressed out. Plain, cold brew coffee if I am. What about yours?”
“Oh, you’re a professor? Should I be addressing you as Dr. Delilah then?” he asked, letting out a slight chuckle. “That’s pretty awesome. What inspired you to get into that field? I can’t imagine doing anything scientific or even closely related to scientific. Chemistry One was such a pain in the butt. I think my lab partner wanted to switch partners because I had no clue on what I was doing the whole entire semester.” Aiden was definitely not good at science, to say the least. Maybe it was because books made him feel closer to his parents and science felt like he wasn’t honoring his parents. Then again, young Aiden did everything he could to still feel like his parents were there. As an adult, he wishes he tried harder in other subjects, maybe life would have been different. Maybe he could’ve done research or something. “Oh wow. I’m definitely an iced soy latte kind of guy, even when it’s cold as hell outside. I can’t do hot drinks. My tongue is way too sensitive and I can’t have dairy because my stomach is too sensitive. Do you just drink cold brew without any creamer?”

“I mean I’m not opposed to taking a self defense class, like you said, it’s better to be prepared then not.” Nora nodded her head, it was weird that she let her guard down as she strolled the streets of the place she called home. Maybe she was so used to New York she figured Wilmington would be less insane. “But I think that would possibly be the last time something like that happens…knock on wood.”

“Yeah, I know a couple places around here I could recommend you to. I’ve been trying to find ways to offer free self defense classes, but it’s hard because people need money. How is your night going? Besides what just happened.” He finished. He wasn’t always the best at this small talk but he didn’t want her to feel like he was just trying to leave after he helped her out.

Delilah shook her head at his question, she hadn’t decided to move forward and get her doctorate. She managed to snag the job by keeping in the good graces of her superiors and getting her Master’s - add being the top of her class to that list and she was shoe in when she applied. “No, no - not yet anyways. Just Professor Gregory, or Ms. Delilah Ms. Gregory and the like. Though, only my students really call me any of those things,” she had to stop herself there, her rambling causing her to feel as if she was being annoying. “I uh-” she coughed, wondering if she were to tell him the truth or not. Her reasoning for choosing that specific point of study was…well, complicated. “I thought it would be pretty interesting to try and dig deeper into the frame of our mind. The human memory is so….complex and I wanted to somehow try and learn the truth behind it all.” she stated, eyes thoughtful as she spoke. It wasn’t really a lie, though it wasn’t necessarily the full truth. “If I had been your chemistry partner I probably would have chewed your head off for not helping,” she laughed a bit after saying this. She had had plenty of lab partners that didn’t truly get science like she did - so she could understand if someone else would feel frustrated in that regard. “I used to be a iced coffee girl too, but for whatever reason I like things…hot,” Eyes looking him over briefly as she spoke, she took the remaining sip of her coffee and shook her head in response to him. “Nope, just plain cold brew. It honestly is not that bad, just the right amount of bitter.”

“Oh, Professor Gregory. That sounds pretty cool. My students call me Mr. Carter or sometimes they call me AC Slater because of my first and last initial. I try to dissuade them, but it’s hard and it’s pretty cool that I’m not just another Mister that they call.” He listened to her explanation of why into she got into her field and he understood. “That’s pretty interesting. I can definitely understand where you’re coming from. I mean there isn’t a truth per se behind English, but I love learning the stories behind the authors and just the time period that the novels were written,” he rambled on. “My apologies. I didn’t mean to make that about myself, but it really is interesting to learn about the complexity that is the human mind.” He let out a laugh hearing that she’d chew his head off. “Yeah, I don’t blame you. I tried to help, but I definitely almost mixed a couple incorrect chemicals together or whatever that is.” He honestly had not much knowledge regarding science. “Oh, I mean some hot drinks are good, but only hot chocolate if I’m being honest. Spiked hot chocolate is delicious. I cannot do coffee without creamer. My stomach cannot handle the bitterness.”
