amperes are the unit of electrical current. they express an amount, while voltage is the difference between two electrical currents

familiar with the subway/metro system? they have electrified rails that have many amps of current running through them, but it does not harm you if your body is only touching the electrified rail. much like the train system, electricity does not like to be smushed together and would like to equalize

so if you have one foot on the ground and the other on the rail, the crowded electricity in the rail will want to move to the less crowded ground... via your body, which will kill you. if you don't give the electricity a path to equalize, then it won't hurt you

next time you see the little birds on the electrical line, remember those birds have a lot of amps pumping around them :)
