A Big Bang fic for @ts-storytime
With art by @sometimes-love-is-enough!
There are bad things in every world, but in a world with magic these things can often hit closer to home. And sometimes, home isn’t even what you once thought it was.
Virgil is running away, from a place no longer his home. Emile has been driven away, and just wants to get back home. And Patton is trying to figure out what makes up a home.
They’ve found people that care for them, but is that what it takes? Will they ever really find home?

Notes: This was begun before SvSR, and Janus’s name is Dee. ~30,000 words. Roman and Remus take a back seat in this one.

hey fanders. we gotta talk about something.
I saw loads and loads of people posting about and defending Thomas opening up a Patreon, because hes an independent creator who deserves to be paid for his work. We all agree on that.
So why am I seeing people refuse to talk about what happened to the madlibs artists?
It's not drama. It's the same situation, except they're not your "unproblematic fave". So why are people avoiding it like it's "discourse"? It's not discourse. It's independent artists asking to be fairly compensated for their work.
Except it's not even that anymore. All they're asking for is awareness at this point. Awareness so that other small creators don't get scammed for their literal days of nonstop effort and work.
Chances are that the artists involved won't be compensated. But we need to spread this shit like wildfire, same way yall did with the Patreon.
Because every single damn artist deserves to get paid fairly for their work.
"He hasn't cared to share that with us" your point is right, but that phrase is literally just such a common excuse for cancel culture and you could have explained your point better. For all we know a video about it is coming and still being prepared since it's a really serious thing, and stuff like that already happened. I'm already thinking for example of projared, who was completely destroyed on the internet for not apologizing for what people thought he did that he was canceled, while he was taking the time to seriously respond to accusations. Just...people need time to reply about stuff this serious, that's really not the excuse to use when theres proof and shit y'know?
Okay, I hear your point, and I get where you’re coming from. It is true that we wouldn’t want him to dash off an apology in three seconds. This is definitely a serious subject that should be discussed with seriousness. And I don’t think you’re entirely wrong to raise this point.
However. I’m going to give you a timeline. The Storytime video was posted on October 24th. Prince Alex’s video was posted on December 12th. He had held off on posting it, partly because of the contract, and partly through anxiety about the whole situation. That’s already a gap of more than a month. And during this time, animators were reaching out to Thomas and Co, and getting no response.
The information began to spread around December 16th. The @storytimediscourse blog was formed on December 17th. This was five days past Alex’s video. Since then, Thomas and Co have communicated with the animators, and the animators received an explanation about the low pay. A week ago, Prince Alex made his video public again, saying that explanations had been given but there was no public apology.
It is currently February 4th. It has been almost two months since Prince Alex’s video. It has been more than three months since the original video.
Yes, maybe Thomas is making a long, extended video about the subject. Maybe the editing situation has held him up. I suppose it’s reasonable to speculate. First of all, I’m not sure I’d like that--such an “apology video” could easily go downhill. I definitely wouldn’t prefer a long-winded video like that. But that’s irrelevant.
The real point is that we’ve seen no evidence of that occurring. Thomas has not mentioned filming such a video. He’s been occupied with Patreon livestreams, the editing issue, and other things--which doesn’t mean he’s too busy to remember, and that we should leave him alone, just that it’s doubtful he’s squeezing in another project on the side.
Furthermore, if he is doing that, that’s still wrong. I’m not trying to make a blanket statement about every situation, but in this case, he needs to handle it better. A long video is fine, I suppose, but it shouldn’t be the first acknowledgment of this in two months. He hasn’t even tweeted about it. He hasn’t apologized to the animators directly. He hasn’t done anything.
Maybe Thomas and Co need time. But this has been a lot of time with no results. How long do you think it takes to make a small video? How long does it take to contact a team of animators? How long does it take to write an apology statement, even a short one, and admit to his mistakes?
All he needs to say is I’m sorry. Look, I’ll even write him a little apology, if he wants to copy-paste it: “Thank you for speaking out about the animator abuse that occurred. I deeply apologize for myself and on behalf of my team. Our budget issues were not an excuse for the way we treated the animators, and we will endeavor to compensate them and apologize to them directly. We will learn from this, and thank you for holding us accountable. A longer video is forthcoming.”
That took me two minutes to write. And it’s probably not the best apology, especially if it’s not backed up by any real change, but it’s a start. And I wrote it in two minutes. And Thomas has an entire team.
“He hasn’t apologized yet” can be an excuse for cancel culture, I’ll give you that. But it’s been two months. It’s been silent. Animators are still left without answers, support, or acknowledgment. We’ve given him time. We’ve gotten nothing. And if we continue to wait, instead of pushing him into action, we’re gonna end up with nothing.
Some of the animators were forced to finish the project in two weeks. If inexperienced animators can finish their work in less than two weeks, Thomas can write an apology in less than two months.
I’m going to say this again, adding shitty warnings that don’t even serve their purpose as warnings after the fact is not praiseworthy, and only adding somewhat proper warnings after someone has straight up said they had a seizure because of it is even less praiseworthy. Stop telling Thomas how amazing he is for adding warnings when we’ve been begging him to warn properly for almost a year now at least. This mentality of Thomas is trying his best and therefore can do no wrong needs to stop because a) even if he was trying his best he would still be capable of fucking up in ways that deserve criticism and that we should be allowed to expect apologies for and b) I find it hard to believe he’s trying his best when he consistently forgets to warn for flashing but consistently remembers to warn for cursing or spoilers. I will be reblogging a post of mine soon that reminds people of just how dangerous seizures can be, even if they don’t require a trip to the hospital, and I might even link it in the reblogs here for good measure because apparently the fandom needs the reminder since so many people are acting like he’s godly for finally adding a somewhat decent warnings when he did.

dear tss fandom,
thomas isn’t your friend.
i get that you like him. maybe he got you through hard times. i get that it’s tough to remember this kinda thing. but you gotta keep saying it to yourself.
thomas isn’t your friend.
thomas doesn’t know you. he doesn’t have a vested interest in helping you. he won’t suddenly be your best bud, and nothing you can do will change that.
you cannot help him. you cannot make his day better. you cannot shield him from harm or criticism, because you cannot affect him. because he is not a baby who needs to be protected.
he is a grown man. he is a famous, cis, white grown man.
he is not being attacked. he is not being bullied. he is being held accountable because he is a grown man with a team of grown adults and he should do better.
i’m tired of seeing people rush to his defense when he’s criticized. i’m tired of seeing people devastated the moment he’s less than perfect. i’m tired of serious issues being called drama and discourse and just being mean.
thomas is a creator who has made mistakes. thomas has made mistakes. everyone makes mistakes, and that’s not to excuse his, but it’s to provide context. every person you know will let you down someday, because there is no one in this world that’s close to perfect.
and that’s not an attack on you. please don’t let yourself feel like you’re being criticized, too. you’re not. none of this is a reflection on you. you can still like tss, you are still be a good person, nobody is trying to hurt you. it’s okay.
thomas should not be your idol. thomas should not be your sole source of happiness. thomas should not be the most important person in your life. thomas should not be anything more than a creator you admire.
because even if you’ve decided he hasn’t let you down yet–if you’ve decided his mistakes aren’t that bad–one day, he’s gonna. one day he’s going to do something you personally don’t like. or one day you’ll find you can’t keep from criticizing him anymore.
and the longer you put that off, the longer you bury yourself in worship for him, the more it’s gonna hurt.
take a deep breath. please take a second to breathe. please take a second to think. please go outside, take breaks, take care of yourself. please give yourself time.
separate yourself from the things you love. really examine how u think about ccs in your head. keep yourself from being hurt. thomas has no obligation to do that for you–you’re the one who keeps yourself safe.
so keep yourself safe and keep yourself honest.
thomas is not your friend.
please, please keep reminding yourself.
