had an idea so i'm putting it here so i don't forget about it later so what if Passive nightmare (like nightmare before the apple incident but has been dealing with villagers for awhile) Like he finds a weird magic book that transports him to a fantasy world. (yes like Narnia but a lil bit different) The book is obviously magic and breaks several laws of physics and it holds a lot more that appears bc it's pages are pretty much endless. One of the pages is like a whole 3D astrological clock that is set to the time Nightmare wants to return to his world. one hour in his world = one day in the fantasy world. every time Nightmare returns to the fantasy world it is always exactly one day after he left. how does he enter in the first place? simple. portal page In the otherworld Nightmare is known as a "Book keeper." there have been many Book keepers before him and a list is included on the first pages. thinking about one of the names and opening to a random spot in the book Nightmare can read the persons story (their adventures in the fantasy world) These stories include lots of knowledge on the world as well as spells that can be cast useing the book. Nightmare's book "avatar" grows and changes but when he returns to his world he's back to regular passive look. this can make things strange as Nightmare is eventually after awhile spit between his "real" child body and the grown up self he's lived as for the majority of his time. there is also a weird smoky/magic cloud being that is basically the book's consciousness. each Book keeper has a different name and concept of them. Passive calls his wisp and he looks like a vaguely dragon shaped cloud. Wisp basically tells Nightmare where in the book he can find info on a specific situation. honestly it'a debate exactly how sentient Wisp is. Either eldritch deity level or just a lil guy. maybe both idk. yea Nightmare has never told Dream anything. Dream does notice that Nightmare starts carrying the book everywhere with him because he doesn't want to loose it or risk it getting stolen (honestly a valid concern with the situation and how the villagers treat him) And Nightmare seems to change randomly. Like he grows up mentally but like instantly. It's the curse of the Book keeper. They simultaneously never grow up and also experience much more than others. their minds become sort of strange. Imagine if the apple incident still happens and Nightmare looses the book only to find it centuries later. or maybe dream finds it or even someone in the gang maybe? either way Nightmare would still have his Book avatar looking more like a grown up passive than goop monster.
