I won’t say that people like the whole family thing for Franklin and Michael and Trevor is because Franklin is black. 

Firstly I can think of five other fandoms that do the whole “older man, younger man OMG they’re like father and son” thing. Peter Parker and Tony Stark, Malcom Bright and Gil Arroyo, Dean Winchester and Jack Kline, and probably a million other fandoms that can’t think of at the moment…

Secondly, I don’t think viewing Franklin as a “member of the family” is always infantilizing because adult children who are close with their parents or find a new parental figure in an older mentor is something that happens a lot in a real life too. It’s not something people should be seen as being a “baby” for. 

Thirdly, there are many instances throughout the game where people do refer to Michael and/or Trevor as Franklin’s daddies or notice the close relationship Michael and Franklin have:

1. Agent Sanchez after the Paleto score

2. Tonya mentions it in one of the driving missions for the tow truck. 

3.  Trevor mentions it at the start of the merryweather heist and the 

4. Lamar says it several times in his friendly conversations with Franklin and Trevor. 

5. Trevor says it again in the epilogue friendly conversation between him and Franklin. 

6. The whole dialogue in Ending B is about this concept. 

7. Devin Weston says it. (I think it’s the mission with the cars but don’t quote me on that)

and probably many more example. 

Fourthly, the writers intended people to see Trevor, Michael and Franklin as a surrogate family unit. In an interview with Dan Houser he mentions this when talking about Franklin. 

Though I agree that making fun of Franklin’s traumatic past and his mother dying is terrible. I haven’t seen that personally but I can believe it with all the people who have made posts in the past fantasizing about Amanda and Tracey getting tortured and murdered.

i don’t really mean it because franklin is black - i mean it because some of the people who say that ((key point, some)) only acknowledge his existence when it’s like this - “franklin is a goo goo gaa gaa baby and loves his cute daddies who r like so in love)”(not that im disagreeing w trikey being in love fsjajafsak). that’s the only time they actually care about him and then proceed to ignore his existence until they wanna talk abt him being trikey’s child again, hence it being a red flag.

also it feels so weird to see that it’s mostly tumblr users who think like that since whenever I scroll though youtube or reddit (ew ikr) people tend to appreciate franklin the most. also yall forget that lamar exists. usually black side characters who r actually important to the story characters don’t get as much attention as a ~mediocre white guy~ who appears max 2 times in the game ((chef) but there’s more characters i can think of easily).

why can’t they talk about jimmy and trace being trikey’s babies instead? these 2 would actually sorta appreciate that instead of being annoyed with it! wade would probably love that too. these 3 adopted by T n M would make like the least perfect family like ever but would probably actually appreciate that.

ALSO i’m referring to the “daddies” conversation when I’m talking about franklin being uncomfortable and annoyed by it - he clearly expresses that he doesn’t want to be referred as their son which trev n michael ignore and go on to tease him more. while it’s a funny convo after thinking about it it’s pretty easy to realize to T and M it was nothing more than “haha ur parents r dead wanna get adopted by a couple of gay dudes” thing to piss of franklin lol

anyways the people I’m referring to these people don’t ever talk about franklin the way they talk about T or M - they don’t ever talk about him being v attractive (which he is?? I get preferences n stuff and since I’m a lesbian maybe i see things in different way but I don’t get just ignoring franklin when he’s like the hottest one)(im not judging tho AFSKAG).

im not calling out everyone who does stuff like this since even I can see “family” thing and I do know that it exists in lots of other fandoms but I do have a problem with people who ignore everything franklin did in the game (n forget that he’s like… an actual person too?) and just go on about trikey, trevor being hot, sometimes shitting on michael for having a family that he loves and picked over trevor (lol) and remembers to post about franklin once in a blue moon, and proceeds to infantilize the shit out of him. if that’s how you think of franklin, maybe you shouldn’t even post about him. just forget he exists lmao. like I get about having favorite characters (it’s probably really easy to guess mine lmao) but if ur gonna consistently ignore the characters u don’t rly gaf about until they fit your agenda then maybe don’t.

gonna repeat myself, I do get the family thing. I just hate how thats all franklin was reduced to - a baby whos embarrassed by his dads showing public affection (even then michael probably walks 6 feet away from trevor and would evaporate if he had to actually show affection to him publicly lol) etc etc etc theres so much artwork like this or similar I’ve seen and I never truly got it. (I mean one of my fav hobbies used to be scrolling through old gta blogs and amount of things like this appaled me. most the blogs who would mostly draw franklin fanart seemed to quit quite quickly)(i don’t rlly look thru the tags anymore so if anyone drew stuff like that recently it’s nothing personal lmao)

like I get it. I know that was the intention of the game. but please do not pretend that franklin wants to be “adopted” by trevor and michael. please do not forget that he’s and actual character in the game too. just because you find the family thing cute - please, please do not infantilize franklin and ignore his existence when it’s not trikey related. he’s his own person who has his own experiences etc and turning him into an adult baby who needs parents is weird. I get it, it’s cute, but he doesn’t exist to be their child.

I’m not even gonna get into de santa family now because thats a can that’s full of big fat worms… maybe another day lmao. (I do want to but people will get even more angry sfqksgqk)

Ah okay. This makes a lot more sense. (I hope my other post didn’t come across as too bitchy or anything) 

I agree 100% that Franklin is underrated as are a lot of other characters in GTA V especially considering he has my favorite collectors mission in the game (Scarlet in Vinewood…God…that mission…that FUCKING mission makes my stomach churn…like Franklin is such a badass in that one though…and the Dom missions…ahhhhh) And it is a real shame people tend to not bother to know much about him. And he’s also not only an amazing character to the GTA series but to media in general because he is an introverted black male character…which is super rare in media genres like GTA.  And it is sad that a lot of artists who enjoyed Franklin (or Lamar) as a character dipped out quickly because they felt under appreciated. 

As for the babyification of him isn’t something I like too much because he is his own person but that is just how fandom in general is. (Like the Avatar fandom and their precious cinnamon roll Zuko comes to mind and I’ve even seen people do this with Borat) Hell, even I am guilty of this because I call Marnie a cultist cinnamon roll all the time on my blog…even though she is really not. 

Don’t be ashamed for being on Reddit LOL…I know I rag on the GTA fandom on there a lot but there are amazing creators on there and just like on here there is amazing art and analyisises of characters and the story and then there will be the millions of memes on GTA VI not being released and some white kid asking if he can say the n-word on voice chat because he has a Franklin skin for his GTA online character. (this was a real post btw) but  my best conversations on underrated characters came from them and even some of the fandom friends are from the reddit fandom specifically. (GTA I artists on there are my soul…like just take my money now)

And as for the Chef thing…I can see why people like to talk about him and make fanworks of him because he is a part of TPI and is also one of the heist crew members in the game so I can understand the love for him. But it is very sad when people undermine the other heist members or can’t even have positive discussions about characters that appear way more than him…

As for the posts (lack there of), I have seen a lot of posts gif sets, artwork, fics, etc. that are primarily focused on his character but maybe they got buried or something…but I know there are a lot of creators on here who constantly upload things about him…same goes for Lamar… and I have also seen lots of content for Jimmy and Tracey being Michael and Trevor’s kids and family too and Wade posts as well and I have seen so many posts on here with people simping for Franklin and Lamar but like I said those posts may have been older (recently gone down the GTA rabbit hole with older blogs I have found LOL) or just got buried in the stupid tumblr algorithm …of course there will never be “too much” or “enough” content for these kinds of things but I never felt particularly starved for content like I do for a lot of other characters (like my favorite, Marnie)…but like I said those posts or things may have just been buried by the algorithm or eaten by tumblr but I must say I highly disagree with that statement that fans here have reduced him to just a “baby” character or that fans don’t make a lot of content for Lamar or with Michael and Trevor being parents to the Townley kids or with Wade.
