“look, look! isn’t my wife just so cool?! right, he’s amazing!”

as soon as kalim hears the words ‘wife’ and your adoration whispered to another’s ears, he pauses and feels his face burn. this isn’t something you see very often, you know, a blushing Kalim.

normally he’s very chill and casual about the pda and affection you give but when he hears your nickname… it’s something he totally doesn’t expect… but really loves! I’m sure he immediately went and bragged about it to Jamil like:

“JAMIL?!!? GUESS WHAT HAPPENED?!”

Jamil, absolutely deadpan: “oh noooo what happened? don’t tell me… they called you…?”

“THEY CALLED ME WIFE!!!! WIFE!!!!”

“oh, really? I never would have guessed from the yelling and shouting… hehe, kidding.”

he’s SO going to refer to himself as your wife every chance he gets- so much so that some people are actually convinced y’all are married (which is happening soon! ^^)

jamil wants to pull the non-existent hoodie over his head and it takes his all not to grow embarrassed at this very official meeting. you just had to mess with him like that, huh?

“what was that?”

“what was what?” you’d say, all nonchalant. “I was just introducing you, jamil, there’s nothing to be embarrassed about.”

“you know exactly what I’m talking about.”

you burst into a laugh, and jamil groans, burying his head on a pillow. “I can’t believe you

went and said that, at a meeting no less.”

you laugh, squeezing him in a side hug. “but you know, I do mean it.” you caress his hair, daring to press a kiss against it. “I want you as my wife, by my side, for as long as we live, and before you say anything, no, I don’t care if we’re going to be under the Asim’s forever, either. it’ll be you and me, and I’m more than happy with that.”

if you felt a stray tear drop fall against you when he drapes against your shoulder, you don’t comment, and neither does he.

Reasons why people aren't engaging with your work:

They didn't see it on the dash or in the tags. Tags are finicky sometimes. If you add too many links in the body of your work, or if there are keywords in the tags that the tumblr gods don't like, your fic might not show up in the tags you added. Fret not! You can go back and tweak a few things, and 99% of the time, it will work. Just give it a few minutes. Also, as someone who follows a good number of blogs, I don't always come across everything my mutuals post, so there's a good chance I didn't see it if indeed it might have piqued my interest.

They don't have time to read it. I don't mind reading short drabbles or imagines quickly and reblogging, but if there's a longer fic or one that's multi-chaptered, I want to give it my full attention, so I'll wait for a time when I have fewer distractions and I'm able to concentrate. It might be hours after you post. It might be days/weeks. People are busy outside of this platform.

It's a topic/plot point they aren't interested in/are triggered by/isn't their cup of tea. And you know what? It's okay. Not everything you write is going to cater to your audience at all times. What matters is that you are writing what you love. The notes and reblogs are wonderful, for sure, especially if it's something you've really put your heart and soul into and believe in wholeheartedly. I know firsthand how it can be discouraging as a writer to work for hours on something and have it receive little to no traction. But there's a quote that I think of often in these cases- What feeds the lily drowns the cactus. People still love you. Maybe just not the ones you want. You will move on. It will be okay. I promise.

Their interests have shifted. Maybe they were obsessed with one particular character for a long time, but now they've moved on to another fixation. That's okay, too. People change. Interests change. Totally normal, and not something you should take personally.

Just because someone is on your tag list doesn't mean they're obligated to read everything you write. It's really okay if they don't. You'll keep creating, they'll read what they like and that's that. It's really that simple.

A multitude of other reasons: they're sick, they're busy with uni or with work, they don't use tumblr anymore, they're dealing with any number of outside stressors that have nothing to do with you as a person or the quality of your work. It's not personal, I swear. And I say this as someone who did take it personal for a long, long, long time and ended up ruining relationships with people because of it. Don't badger your friends or your followers if they don't read everything you write.

The face of social media is changing. Just in the few years I've been here, I've noticed a shift from lots of comments/reblogs/tags to people just throwing up a like and maybe a reblog, or maybe not engaging at all. It's sad, and yes it sucks, but it's out of our control.

Your audience is different on Ao3. Trust me on this. I have fics here that have little to no feedback that are booming over on the Archive. Try a different setting! You might be surprised.

Just keep doing what you love. And if it begins to spark more anxiety and feelings of low self-worth than joy and happiness, maybe it's time to take a step back and look at why you're doing it in the first place. Remember why you started, and remember that feeling of excitement when you posted your first fic. Remember who you are and what you want, and the rest will come to you as it's meant to, I promise.
