You know for all of my complaints about the romance in the series and the spotlight of the later issues on it. I do have to admit that they had a good connection/chemistry. Both of them are people who see something happening and jump in no questions asked. Both of them face what other characters describe as anger problems, and while Yara learns to use that anger and have a bit of redirection of those feelings, Jason ends up slowly getting more angry throughout the series. Not it the it went from 0-100 really quick, but that his anger was starting to add up, and even with good mentors, he didn't have the best outlet for it. I complain about his characterization a bit, but this Jason is also older than Jason, who died. He's in the middle of the teenage angst years. [Plus, the fact this was a transition to what would become of mainline Jason]
Jayra or Jara or whatever ship name the fandom has yet to settle on, could have been a good relationship from the standpoint of the series, but it's the shoehorning and how it takes over panel space that gets annoying. I do like their dynamic from the earlier issues where it was clear something was there, but it wasn't the main focus of the series.
Now, if you want a relationship that was forced and weird, look at Yara's first appearance in the mainline comics. Her Wonder Girl 7 issue + annual featured Eros literally stabbing her with an arrow so that she would be more suspect able to want to go to Olympus with him. He eventually releases her from the love magic, but it is so creepy to think about. If was forced in a way that is wrong and the undertones there that don't get discussed.
At least with how forced Jayra was, it was by the story and not a character literally removing the free will of someone else. They at least choose each other. Anyway, anyone who hates Jayra/Jara has to at least believe that it was better than the Cupid thing.
This feels like a hot take nowadays, but Jara (Jason Todd/Yara Flor) was the best possible relationship that could’ve come out of the Elseworld’s Teen Titans. Do I think the series as a whole would’ve been better without a romance plot? Yes, of course, but man do I love Jara.
First of all, both of them are dealing with the pressure of carrying on the legacy of two of the original Teen Titans. I see Cara fans saying “oh, but Batgirl is a legacy name, too,” but it’s really not the same. Cass had Barbara in her corner while Jason and Yara didn’t have Dick or Donna in theirs (at least at the start/not in the same way that Cass had Babs.)
Also, despite the fact that the romance plot from #27 to #36 was forced I admit, they had chemistry before that. Almost from the start, before they were really friends or got along that well, they had banter! There was tension! There was already foreshadowing for the relationship that would blossom between the two of them by #5.Â
The specific moment of foreshadowing that comes to mind in issue 5 is Roy’s thought boxes on page 26, where Roy compared the two to him and Donna. Most people say this makes no sense, that it would be better to make a comparison between Dick and Donna, I say this was purposeful to hint at how their relationship would develop.
And at the end, Yara was the one who was there for Jason after he killed Condiment King, helping him as he tried to figure out what it meant to have blood on his hands. All the others, especially Roy, turned their back on him without even asking why he did it (which I suppose we should blame the writers for more than the characters, and how rushed the entire ending is).
In conclusion, whether you like the ship or not, the writers were pushing it from the start. If you’re an Elseword’s Teen Titans fan, you can’t ignore it. Stop getting pissy when people enjoy the CANON ship, and stop trying to make a perfectly normal friendship a romantic relationship… but also qpr cara would slap.
Barbara for the character bingo!

1: I don't actually think everyone else is wrong about them but I think a lot of people are
2: This is specifically in regards to the magicuring
Hot take: series shouldn't have had ships in general. No romance subplot. There is other ways to build characters than through the romance route.
Ngl. My hot take for Elseworld's Teen Titans. Yara did not need to be there. They butchered her for what??? Genuinely wish they used Donna or something else, she would've fit better with what they were trying to do. Like her friendship with Cass was outstanding, but it almost felt like midway through the series she was replaced by a clone or something.
I recently mentioned I liked some of the Alt covers for the Batgirls series. I thought I'd share some of my other favourites.
Batgirls #1

I just think it's kinda fun. A nice homage cover and I really like the simple highlights in Steph's hair.
Batgirls #3

The lines feel like a sketch. It's giving a bit of a Spiderverse feel to it if that makes sense. I love the yellow outlines on the foreground compared to the background. The overstuffed utility belts make a lot of sense.
Batgirls #6

I love the vibrant colours on this cover. Pink Yellow and Blue. Reminds me of printer ink. The yellow being a highlight, and the pink almost becoming a shadow or lowlight on Cass's suit.
Batgirls #7

Love how Cass's cap feels a bit like a wing. The ombre background reminds me of the ombre background sky from Huntress (1994 run). I like how a light blue is used as a highlight and a mid tone blue is used as Steph's undercape compared to the warm tones.
Batgirls #9

The outlines bring pink on Cass where the light hits compared to the solid Spoiler suit lines. Steph's hair is softly outlined compared to the harsh lines.
Batgirls #11

Cass's making up the left ear, and the way both capes make the logo go in different ways. Cass's makes the logo wings go down, and Steph's makes the logo wings go up. The grainy feel to the art reminds me of old comics. Feels a bit nestolgic
Batgirls #12

I own this one. Old Cass Batgirl logo! The art reminds me of a specific era of advertisements and the colors of older TV color. 80s or early 90s anime? IDK I don't remember the right name.
Batgirls #15

Pink sky, blur bag round, and green in the bottom left corner. Cass, who stands out against it, and Steph, who seems to make it her own. I like the idea of some more color to Cass's outfit. A bot of a mix between the Bat suit and the orphan suit. The blue building reminds me of building plans..
Batgirls #16

Paint splatter background. The bit of a white outline. The detailed drawing. It reminds me of the aesthetic background people put behind cut-out pictures. Like a mix of quick art and slow art if that makes sense? The blending of two styles together.
Batgirls #19

Gold outlines?! Yes! Steph has rays of sun behind her. Reminds me of the dead Steph carrying Cass panel from Batgirl 2000. Again, with the paint splatter. Love to see it. The white highlights on Cass's suit.
