Twelve hours. Twelve hours of driving and you were almost regretting your decision. The job wasn’t ideal, better suited to a student, or at least someone fresh out of college. It had been a while since your academic adventures and this felt juvenile after years in an office. But the ad agency had cut jobs and yours had been among them. Getting another was harder than you expected and would require relocation.

Summary: You and the Avengers are in Sin City in order to celebrate Bucky and Natasha’s impending nuptials. Before the boys and girls break off into their respective bachelor/bachelorette parties, you give Thor, Steve, and Bucky some special booze you made so they can get drunk, taking a small sip for yourself. Everything is fine until you wake up the next morning.

He erased that the minute he decided to stay behind. You two never met. I didn’t want to make Steve go back in time and have another separate Steve still sleeping in ice. Whoops.

Steve knew he didn’t have much time left.

He felt it in his heart, in the very core of his soul that his life was coming to an end. Old age eventually catches up to everyone and despite all the suffering he’s been through, he could only wait. He was laid there on his hospital bed, waiting as time ticked away second by second. His children and their family were just outside the room, talking to the doctors and trying to see if they could do anything to prolong his life. If there’s anything more they could do. The Barnes’ were here too. You were here too.

The ironic part was, he didn’t really want more.

Steve was tired.

He was so very tired.

He wanted to rest. To finally go into sleep and never wake up. He wonders if it’s anything like the time he first woke up from the ice. If by the time he passes, he’d open his eyes to blinding light or if he would just drift into nothingness. If there was a Heaven, and he wasn’t sure if there was anymore or if he was even qualified to be in there, what image would greet him?

Would he see Peggy? The Commandos? Would he see his mother? His father? All the people he’d lost? Would he see you?

God, he hoped he would.

He’d be fine! But,

It lasted twenty-nine days. Just a little more than four weeks before you find out Agent Whatshisface had been going out with a different girl behind your back. When the news breaks over the compound, your face briefly flashes shock before steeling into your usual facade. 

“He’s an idiot,” Steve starts, patting your back. “Wanna go out tonight?” Sam offers. “I’m gonna fire his ass,” Tony threatens.

You only shrug, “Whatever,” and head into your room.

In the corner, Bucky folds his arms across his chest and taps his foot rhythmically. 

The rest of the day passes by smoothly enough and strangely, you show no sign of disappointment or heartbreak. Not even anger– something they all feared. Instead, after dinner, you go for a swim and knot your hair up tightly after a shower. The sun sets peacefully over your serene face before you wave from the door at dusk. “Going for a walk! See you later!” And Nat looks around after Friday bids you goodbye.

“Where’s Barnes?”

Inside the bottom level of the cement parking garage where your ex-boyfriend parks his car, you walk calmly with your knife in hand. Fifteen feet away, that shiny, ugly, maroon shitcan on wheels gleams back at you.

Two large boots stick out behind the right side, body hidden by the metal frame.

When you arrive, you find Bucky already finished cutting the breaks.

“Hey,” He greets flatly, slipping his arm around your waist, as if neither of you are in a compromising and illegal situation, “Let’s go get burgers. Pre-murder makes me hungry as hell.”

“Boo!” you yelled at the television, throwing popcorn across the living room from your place on the large expansive white leather couch.

“Whoa, what’s going on here mama?” came Sam’s voice from the entryway near the kitchen. He took in the sight of you before him – wrapped in a large blanket, your signature grey sweats visible from where your feet poked out beside you, propped on the arm of the couch. You leaned on a pile of pillows to your right where a giant bowl of popcorn sat in front of you. Your hair was thrown up in a messy pile on your head and if it wasn’t for the perfectly done full face of makeup, one would have thought you had just rolled out of bed.

“Men suck and these movies are lies!” you yelled again, throwing another fist full of popcorn towards the flat screen where Dermot Mulroney was currently giving furtive glances towards Debra Messing’s character.

“So, I take it the date didn’t go well…” Natasha commented, walking into the living room with Wanda.

“He’d have to show up for it to even go badly,” you mumbled before jamming a fist full of popcorn into your mouth, smearing a bit of red lipstick on your chin.
